Counters to mass anti-tank Champions?

Just lost ranked against a Vi, Wukong and Vayne. Pretty much at Champion select, that said "No tanks allowed", so I had to try Jax. Sadly, they peeled too hard for Vayne.

Any suggestions what to pick against mass tank-buster compositions? Rammus and Malphite won't work because they'll get armor-busted, and health tanks like Volibear are slaughtered by Vayne.

I mean, 'don't play tanks.' In that case, top Lulu probably would have been an effective choice.

I was jungler. Our top laner was Renekton.

Ah. You mentioned Malphite, which made me assume you were top.

Lee Sin would probably have been a solid choice, since he's got a pretty good matchup against Vi, his E neutralizes Vayne's stealth, and their team doesn't really have any way to save an ADC that gets punted into your team (unless they also had a Thresh or something, but still).

Sadly, I kinda suck with Lee.

Don't we all.

Rengar would also have worked decently, since he's essentially got a point and click root that prevents Vayne from tumbling, and it's not really possible for that team to peel him away without blowing ults.

Nunu would have also been a solid choice. They've got 3 AD threats, one of them being a hyper carry that primarily scales with Attack Speed, so Ice Blast and Absolute Zero are going to do work. The main reason it's an excellent pick against Vayne in particular, however, is because Vayne's entire kit operates at the exact same range as Ice Blast, meaning that she can't simultaneously output damage and avoid it.

Also, there's a lot of potential to cheese Vi out of her second buff if the enemy team doesn't ward properly.

Speaking from experience in gaming as a whole, I think the answer may be Off-Tanks. Here's why:

There will be a TL;DR at the end, but it won't really communicate my points. Just bear with me, please.

Back in WoW the most basic formation to learn was "Tank & Spank". You have one big beefy tank, One healer, and Three hardcore damage dealers. The Tank would keep the monster's attention while the healer kept him alive and the damage nuked the targets down as quickly as possible. Later on this format was challenged by raids. The first and most basic counter was to monsters spawn into the fight AFTER the tank had well established a position. This meant that you either needed a really good tank would could get their attention quickly OR (the optimal solution) was to change up the formula. In this case, it meant bringing on an off-tank. Someone with lesser gear or a different skill set who could pick up these extra monsters.

Later on this was challenged again with tank-breaking abilities such as resistance reduction, %hp damage, and debuffs that reduced max health. The Off-Tank then had to be upgraded to the same gear and survivability as the Main Tank. The Off-Tank would taunt the boss off of the Main Tank allowing the debuffs to expire while the Main Tank took on the responsibility of controlling the smaller mobs.

TL; DR: Off-Tanks counter tank-breaking attributes.

  • How can we apply this to league?

In this case, I would suggest a straightforward hardcore tank like Garen, Shyvanna, or Susan who will engage at the front of the party and take the brunt of the damage. Behind them should be a tanky character with hard mass CC like Mumu, Shen, Cho'Gath, or Sejuani. This off tank will come in AFTER the first engage and slow down incoming damage or bring it to a grinding halt. This will allow your main tank to disengage having taken all the tank-breaking and let your team push back with a more aggressive, damage oriented "Off-Tank".

  • **That seems difficult to implement, is there an easier answer? **

Yes, they're called Paladins. I hated trying to find tanking jobs as a warrior due to paladins (and for a time druids). Paladins had abilities that allowed them to heal themselves while tanking. These heals weren't as strong as the main healer's abilities but they could often supplement their main healer by healing themselves in a pinch or healing a DPS who can take some AoE damage. They were subject to the same debuffs and %hp damage, but they could endure just a few seconds longer due to their healing.

  • Oh well, that's nice? How does this apply to league? Taric, Mundo, Udyr, Vlad, maybe Fiddledicks and arguably Mordekaiser.

EDIT: You could also consider sending a healing or shielding support mid so they can build big ticket items and thier heals count for more. Sona, Janna (who plays into the off-tank concept really well), Lulu (another good disengager, but not as good), and Soraka could fill this role.

Hope this helps.
