They are thinking about adding voice chat to solo queue

I can only imagine the rage moved from chat/missing pings to my headset

Communication is going to get far worse with voice chat.

I know SOME people want it, but some like myself want nothing to do with it. That alone is a huge split, just like they didn't want to break up the ranked playerbase, you are splitting people up in the very same game. I am NOT going to use voice chat, because I don't like reading toxicity, and I have no reason to want to hear it too. It also means for people that opt out of it, now you have people that are going to refuse to type or read chat (like duos using skype refuse to read or use chat for example, except every game).

I don't actually see any benefit to it, because anything I need to communicate with strangers I can ping. I don't want to buddy with most of the people I find in solo queue, so I certainly don't want to hear them (I'm just being realistic and honest). I usually have music on and turn in game champion voices off, and so I don't want to suddenly hear:

  • 2 dollar mics that I can barely understand anyways
  • That guy who uses a mic next to his headphones
  • The guy playing in the living room with his family yelling/talking/watching tv/barking dogs
  • The flamer who is MORE likely to flame with a mic, because now he doesn't have that moment of thought when he has to stop to type, and can just rattle off instead of typing a novel in chat
  • The morons who will play stuff into the mics to troll (loud music, porn, making annoying noises, etc).

The downsides far out weigh the upsides as far as I'm concerned, and I want nothing to do with it. I'm far from the only one who wants nothing to do with it believe it or not, so I'm not sure where this thought about "the community has been asking for it", no a small portion of people have been. It's a bad idea, and it instantly makes reports pointless and useless, as people will just flame you over voice knowing they instantly get away with it. There is actually no way to monitor that realistically without causing lag issues and problems for recording live during games to store that, for the off chance there is a "voice chat report" equivalent, that someone would have to dig through.

It's just a bad idea, that I really feel League doesn't need. If you are doing 5s, use 3rd party software that there is a TON of. IF you are duo'ing or grouping, same. If you want so bad to voice chat with someone, ask them in game I guess. the argument it is "opt in" is bs, because people WILL opt in, even if it is just one, and that is instantly one less person properly communicating if his team decides they don't want to use voice, or if two do it, now two people aren't reading chat and responding, etc. It's just introducing a new element of even potential issues I don't see the point of.

at least half the people who are toxic in chat will be too scared to say anything over a headset. If you don't want to hear your team you don't have to. Not much will really be taken away from ingame chat, and it's silly to think someone using voice chat will ignore chat. Team voice chat will always be better than typing in a teamfight as pings can be annoying and easily ignored and you definitely can't type in a team fight.

It already happens. Some games you're lucky if teammates on voice chat even ping.

And that's the problem. Right now if you mute someone the important details can and are still pinged out. That goes out the window with voice chat on the table. You have to mute someone? Good luck knowing if that generic blue ping was "Ward here", "enemy here", "go here", or "look at that cool thing on the map here!"

Maddened King 1 votes

Yeah, because when I mute someone being toxic in chat. His pings are 100% useful...

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? on you when you make any play. V ping whenever you attempt anything. 100%, toxic players drop useful pings.

DrCyanide1 votes

Some toxic players ping spam as well, some don't. But you're not locked out of knowing what their pings mean because you mute their chat. With Voice Chat you will effectively be muting both at the same time.

Aptest2 votes

yes but on the other hand the other there's going to be a bunch of guys screaming "yeah eat that bitch" and "fucking noob shit" at the top of their lungs when ever they get a kill or die.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Have you ever played any other game than lol? Noone is scared, why would they? xD In overwatch there are enough 12yo shitters raging and flaming despite me burying them 6 feet irl. And league community is by FAR worse than overwatch.

Mizuki Zahra1 votes

I bought overwatch and after 3 games I returned it the community and chat are soo toxic and stupid like my first game ever they called me a noob and fed entire game and said they are feeding because I am a noob like duhhh I just got the game

Wimbledofy1 votes

in overwatch most people resort to chat to call someone bad instead of using voice in my experience

Anags1 votes

It's pretty easy to ignore someone's voice. Just ask anyone that has ever been married.

Wimbledofy1 votes

i meant ignore text chat

Dream High1 votes

You would think that but in Overwatch people are pretty liberal with the trash talk on mic.

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

See crap like you mentioned is why I don't want voice comms, and will not join if they ever are implemented.

Supreme Senpai693 votes

To add on, the people who want it make discord channels in the pregame lobby and link them so people can communicate. The people who don't want it either don't do this or don't join

o Eon O2 votes

interesting, I don't join throw a discord link in chat and I also don't go to other peoples discords when they put their link in chat. Kind of blows your claim out of the water. I love OverWatches system and once League has built in voice I'll gladly use it.

Supreme Senpai694 votes

Whoa it's almost like generalizations don't apply to every specific person on the planet. Who would've thought

o Eon O2 votes

And as I just showed you, you probably shouldn't use generalizations. You made an either or, when in reality I was neither of your groups.

Supreme Senpai693 votes

One person disagreeing doesn't blow my claim out of the water though. I could totally be wrong, yeah. But if I am it's not because someone named O EON O disagreed with me is what I'm saying. Lol. People who break generalizations are exceptions not the rules. There is no generalization that encompasses everyone.

Some things are just assumed

When I still played overwatch, voice chat was the first thing I disabled.

EternalShock19 votes

i can only imagine how they will add a mute button but people will still keep the flamer unmuted so they can bitch about it on the forums and cry about how they were abused in a video game and called bad.

The solution? Don't be bad and you won't get flamed. I didn't get flamed in the past 50 games, works wonders for me at least!

This is a troll account I mean smurf account. You are just playing lower skilled players to derive some sort of self worth. Feelsbadman but things will even out when you get back to your rank.

I don't smurf I just abuse graves and can't play anything besides zed feelsbadman

You don't just pick up League get your first champ and end up in gold 1 having never played? How did you learn Zed and Graves having no normal games and no other season games only 25 games played total and only 4 champions played ever?

Maybe you are a first time natural on your way to LCS.

Maximum Morde7 votes

As long as it defaults to off, I'm fine with that. I don't want to use it, and I don't want to be bothered to go turn it off. If it's not defaulted to off I'm just going to stream the Pentakill album into voip every match to get everyone to mute me.

Wheatloaf4 votes

Riot has seemed pretty adamant that if/when they implement it they're going to keep it an opt-in experience.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

why would i mute you then?

If you wouldn't mute the Pentakill album, then you are exactly the kind of person I wouldn't mind chatting with :).

the problem is punishment, how do you punish someone for being an asshole over voice chat? like do you expect a rioter employee to listen through the voice chat of a 30 minute game just to see if someone was actually being an asshole?

Then the tribunal.

I used to go on the tribunal everyday but even I wouldn't listen to 20-30 minutes of voice chat, that's torture

Brutalitops015 votes

A) Don't join the calls B) Mute it C) It's often shown that games have less toxicity in voice chat compared to in game chat

Back in season 1, they not only wanted to develop, but did fully develop a working system for voice chat but never released it out of fear of increased toxicity. After looking through some stats, they found that their fears were unfounded and are now likely working on building the feature again, but better.

Xonra8 votes

And adding it is only splitting communication IN game. Half the team won't read chat, half the team won't use voice. Now you just have 2-3 people communicating one way and ignoring the other. The whole "unfounded fears thing" is bs for as many games as I have played with voice chat, it is infinitely more toxic with VOICE than text, despite people trying to claim the opposite. "People are less likely to say something than type it", is a flat out lie from my experience, as they don't have that moment of "I don't feel like stopping to type that out", and can just rant while still playing now.

Adding it in with a system of already perfectly fine communication is just asking for trouble. Anything someone needs can usually be pinged in most cases, and there are people like myself that see no point in voice chat, and just don't care to deal with kids screaming into a mic. If this voice chat ends up being a reality, Ranked play is going to turn into garbage, as half of teams won't be even attempting to communicate as the "voice chat people" won't want to or see a reason to pay any attention to in game chat, and those against voice chat obviously won't hear what the voice chat players are saying. That alone is a reason to just not do it.

Pings are a shared system that everyone should use.

DrCyanide4 votes

Should being the key word. Everyone should also be civil enough that we don't have to worry about toxic behavior, yet we do.

Look at an LCS game if you want an example of what pings will look like when voice chat is enabled but you muted your team. Random blue ping here/there/everywhere, MIA calls said instead of pinged, group up calls gone, etc.

There won't be a realistic way to opt out of voice chat, it will be as much a necessity as pings are now if it's implemented.

Anags1 votes

Pings are used non stop in pro play to track jungles especially.

Even in voice chat it is hard to describe where something is quicky. That is where pings come in.

Typically pings are used along with chat if your team is good at all. People in voicechat aren't always good at using chat efficiently and effectively. This is really apparent when playing fps games.

DrCyanide1 votes

Yes, but like I said it's the generic blue ping.

If I were to queue up with you and place a blue ping in the fog of war without saying a word, would you know what I was thinking? I could be signalling there's a ward there, I could be signaling we need a ward there, I could be signalling we should group there for a death bush, I could be signalling there is a death bush there, I could be signalling that's where the jungler is, and depending on where it was I could signal that a jungle camp was taken or should be taken. It could also be "look at that animal on the map, I never noticed it before!"

That's a lot to guess, and that's what you'd have to do if you muted voice chat. That's the problem, you lose too much information.

Xonra1 votes

I don't disagree, but should and will are rarely the same thing, sadly.

Backup4now1 votes

Half the team won't read chat, half the team won't use voice.

Are you implying anybody reads the chat or uses pings in-game as is?

P0IS0N IVY5 votes

OW has voice chat and I think a lot of its players don't even use it.

Weissritter2 votes

This. Its actually such a problem that sometimes on the forums you get people complaining that no one joins it in ranked matches even.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

Well noone enjoys annoying noises, stupid rage, some drunk russian guy, german/spanish/french 12yo talking shit. I don't think NA is any different except that you will hear english or spanish the most.

Xonra2 votes

This is EXACTLY why I don't use OW voice chat.

The entire two games I tried it in ranked (I didn't before, and thought maybe I should just bite the bullet and try it in ranked), half, and I mean half, my team was arguing with each other, being rude, and in the second game I could barely hear anyone cause a guy had his mic next to his speakers so echo and music. Haven't bothered since.

Keevalroy4 votes

If you want voice chat, find a third party platform. This will not end well.

VOICE CHAT IS NEEDED stfu already with the whole "omg it would create toxicity bla bla" NO IT WOULD NOT

This thing is NEEDED on the game already i ask for voice chat for years now from the old forums to this forums

IT NEEDED you know how much better the games would be become? stop being such a cry babies and scare a voice of 100000 milles away or mute if you are so superior that you cant accept that someone talking to you

the rest of us we need this

You have never played any online xbox or playstation games have you? Voice chat is cancer and doesn't improve anything

Xonra2 votes

Is pretty cancer in CS:GO, and despite the lies people spread around, OW voice chat is actually pretty bad more often than not, which is why I don't use it. I literally turned it on for two ranked games, the first my team that was using it were busy arguing the entire time, and second game was some kid with his mic next to his speakers, so echoing and loud music.

Lauchmelder3 votes

CSGO voicechat is absolute garbage.

Missplayed? Get flamed

Need some silence to hear footsteps? Blablabla

Don't do what the 10 year old kid (silver 3) tells you (the MGE) to do? Get a squeaker flaming you.

CSGO has an absolute garbage tier voicechat.

You are the perfect example of little ragekids i don't want to hear over voice.
