First Step To Climbing: My Fault Attitude

Subdue··3 votes·395 views

The first step to climbing the ladder is having a "my fault" attitude.

Top lane got level 3 ganked? I should have been there to counter.

Bot lane losing 2V2? *I should have ganked to relieve some pressure. *

Jungler died dueling in the jungle? *I should have rotated to help him. *

If you consider everything that goes wrong as your fault, you'll start looking for ways to improve. If you look at everything that goes wrong as someone else's fault, you'll stagnate.

Unfortunately the people who need to hear this the most tend to be the ones who will openly deny it as being useful...

I know for me, I'm comfortable enough tracking the enemy jungler for myself, but I often forget to warn my teammates.

Wrong, but ok. You're going to find too many faults

Feels like you're saying this: https://youtu.be/N3bkxrMMroA?t=55s

See it happen before it happens so you can prevent it from happening or take advantage of that situation.... Like an evil little finger.

You enter the workforce with that attitude, you'd be forever a beta and never reach anywhere. Instead of being a little bitch and taking the blame for everything, learn to accept that there are somethings that are out of your control and it is the other party's fault. If you want to spend your entire career cleaning up other people's mess that's your choice.

that's not even close to true. If you enter the workforce with that attitude you learn from the people around you and you become really good at what you do and get more responsibility/make more money. And besides, who DOESN'T want to hire someone that's really good at fixing your problems for you?

No because you'd be admitting to your superior that you are always at fault every time some things go wrong, while the so called "blamers" would use you to shove the blame on.

There's a difference between taking the fall for something and trying to see if there was something you could have done to fix it.

Beta? Seriously? How do people still think that sort of thing works? There is no definition of alpha or beta that fits our species or our society, so stop overcompensating and face reality. People who claim to be "alpha" have a superiority complex, and instead of manning up and dealing with their problem they hide behind it like a shield. Actions speak louder than words, and every time I see someone say they are "alpha" they are proving they are not.

Unless you're using that idiotic thinking as a joke, in which case you got me.

I never claimed to be alpha, but beta and alpha do exist. Trying to take the blame for every single thing that goes wrong is beta attitude.

Alpha and Beta do not exist for our species. With the way people use the words they don't actually exist in any species.

People use Beta when talking about someone who is passive and doesn't take charge, when in the animal kingdom Beta animals are second in command. They lead when the Alpha pair are not around, and they become the Alpha pair if something happens to the original leaders. There's nothing passive or subservient about them, the word for that caste is Omega.

Some also tie it to the A and B personality types. Besides the fact that it's almost a 70 year old system and has been overshadowed by many more accurate ways of measuring personality, it also doesn't perfectly match the way people use Alpha and Beta. It's basically a system that describes Extroversion and Introversion, with a few extra details attached here and there. Contrary to popular belief Introverts can be great leaders and very outgoing people.

Then you get people who, and though I don't have the link I'll try to quote the guy as best I can, "get all the pussy and everyone else is a Beta cuck". I literally had someone say this to me on the boards, claiming to be a "real Alpha male". These people wouldn't know basic psychology if it hit them with a car, and are honestly infuriating to share a species with. They are hyperdefensive and show just about all signs of having a superiority complex. I'll see if I can find the thread, though I doubt it with the quality of the board's search function.

Now, what the OP is talking about is taking responsibility for your own actions, not being a blame magnet. If your goal is to win you should try and help your allies as best you can, and recognizing what you could have done differently allows you to improve your decision making as you get better at the game. You don't have to take the blame, you don't have to say "sorry guys, it's my fault for not doing X", you just have to realize that doing X could have tipped the game in your favor, and make a note to try and do better next time.

It's about self criticism, which is a very powerful skill many people never developed. Being able to blame yourself instead of others is just an important first step.

When people talk about Alphas and Betas, they start looking like cavemen. That's probably the last time such concepts actually mattered.

Well, first of all, you've completely misconstrued the premise of my original post. The point isn't that you need to apologize or in anyway externally admit you've made some error. The point is that you should take everything that goes wrong in a game as an opportunity to examine the things that you do so that you can do better the next time that situation comes up. Looking for someone else to blame not only hinders your own growth, but actually makes it harder to run the game you're currently in.

That said, regarding your work place comment: people who seek to build up their teammates, who look for ways to solve problems and innovate, those are the people who get promoted, and also the people who teammates gravitate towards. And when it comes time for applying for that new job, whether within the company or outside of it, those are the people who have teammates falling over themselves to write letters of recommendation.
