The best thing riot could give the players

The best thing riot could give the players is a new gameplay philosophy. I mean if you think about it, one of the biggest problems driving the reworks and new champs that the players really hate is that riot's underlying gameplay philosophy that rework Akali is the best or that Irelia on her rework's release was fine, or Kei'Sha/Zoe were good ideas. Don't get me wrong, there have been champs and reworks that are fine, good even. However the fact that multiple toxic champs have been released or where the results of reworks means that riot finds those champs acceptable.

Take Akali's new shroud. What ever happened to riot's idea around counterplay? Where's the counterplay when you are trapped by an invisible assassin you can't do anything about and said assassin gets to stay invisible longer the more she attacks you. Or take Zoe's paddle. Does anyone remember old Nidalee spears? The ones that actually encouraged you to chuck them at long range? A ton of people hated that skill. Putting all of a champ's damage into one skill was a mistake that shouldn't have been repeated lightly. So riot decides to give it a second shot.

Can any red tell me why akali and yasuo are banned 50% of the time? The answer isn't tuning. It's because riot never learned that some crap isn't fun to play against even if you know how to beat it. They forgot that games are supposed to be fun for everyone involved. Irelia has a 45% win rate and she's still banned half of the time because she's not fun to play against. Riot really needs to stop making champs that aren't fun to play against. Is there counterplay doesn't go far enough. If playing against a champ feels like walking barefoot across a football field full of legos even if you can win, there's a problem with that champ's design.

So riot, please try to stay focused on designs that are both fun to play as and fun to play against.

Sadly, the whole Season 8 has taught us that they won't. They aren't able to, and they don't even want to.

  • They ignored every warning about how the new runes weren't good, and how damage was skyrocketing (see below);
  • most of the broken annoying things they added last season are still here (Brand passive/ignite/Conqueror/Zoe...);
  • they added a new support to the game, and it was an abomination and a missconcept about the role itself ("a support chasing pentakill is awesome");
  • they first denied that damage was so darn high, and now that they've finally admitted it they still haven't nerfed basically anything relevant;
  • CertainThingy still "works" on this game, when his failures are far worse than his contributes.

Do you really still have expectations? :P

I agree with your sentiments. However not having expectations will let riot know people really don't care anymore. We have to have them and hold riot to them.

Riot needs to raise the bar.

Yes, they need to. But not with the current staff/people.

They proved their incompetence a LOT of times. In any normal company that would be more than enough to change. Instead, they are intentionally going on this way.

In the present state, Season 9 it's gonna be just as Season 8.

I don't care anymore, most don't. There's no point to care.

because riot never learned that some crap isn't fun to play against even if you know how to beat it.

This pretty much sums up why we keep having no strategic choices.

"Defense isn't fun to play against"- said the assassin mains "Getting one shot isn't fun when we can't react" - Said all the other mains.

So riot was like fuck it. Everyone is an assassin now.

If you want to blame anyone for current meta, blame ADCs and supports for the s7 ardent meta. Current meta is just a result of hatred towards enchanters and hypercarries (and it's rightful hatred, fuck these classes).

You're half right-half wrong. The reason for THAT meta was...you guessed it assassin mains.

Assassin mains have nothing to the current meta, they aren't even strong right now lol

GigglesO2 votes

It doesn't matter if they are strong right now. It started with the assassin meta where they were one shotting everyone. So then the power levels just kept creeping up on other classes as they did rotational buffs.

There was no true assassins meta

Any one shot meta is an assassin meta. Even if the champions weren’t the issue doesn’t mean the style of play isn’t an issue.

I think part of the problem with this is the balance team. They basically don't know when to stop pushing things the other way until they've gone too far. A little over-correction happens. However it seems like balance tends to do one more round of buffs/nerfs after the point of a little over-correction.

However for some champs, it's hard to blame them. It's probably going to be very difficult to get akali with her current kit to be properly balanced. And I guess this means there's another aspect of philosophy of champ design riot needs to consider reviewing: how easy is it going to be to get a champion or skill properly balanced. Shroud seems like it was done for #LCSbigplays but C9 basically permabanned her at worlds because of her kit.

Did someone say money?

I think you are right, they do push it too far. I currently feel like the only choice in this game is damage.

Even if they don't want to abandon their current philosophy, then at least make a new branch of the development which will follow a philosophy that so many of your players actually want to see...

Linna Excel2 votes

This would be a fair compromise. Half of the new champs/reworks could be based on what the players want (fun gameplay and counterplay) and the other half based on whatever it is riot is up to.

While I'd like to see development continue on the philosophy that the players approve and prefer, however, even before that, simply not stripping out content from the game to make room for content that follows the new philosophy that riot is converting the game towards would be an improvement.

If riot wants to rework a champion, then leave the old version playable in custom games. If riot wants to remove an item leave it available in custom games, and allow items to be selectively disabled in customs. Basically, even them just giving more power to custom games would be an improvement to the current system of removing content as they develop new content.

The best thing RIOT could do is add a large 'uninstall' button to their client. Nothing else will fix the problem at this point.
