One side wall ability, are they healthy for the game?

Hi everybody

Here I open a thread to discuss about the meaning of a wall ability in this game.

At first, when a champ as a wall ability, it was most likely to say " I do my stuff here, nobody cross that line" (either friend or foe), it was more like a defensive or disengage tool, pretty close to what a wall is supposed to do in fact. (make nothing pass from both side)

This years, new kind of wall was introduce to the game, the one side wall. By being able to stop only ennemy movement or projectile, as the match go to mid/late game, the defensive aspect of them turn more and more into an agressive tool (if your team as the advantage it's even more impactfull) with not so much option left for the other team (they can fight, not us, time to back or leave tower)

As a player who saw wall as defensive ability only, I have big difficulties to find that kind of ability fair (or as riot say, fun to play against) Add to that, for me, I have the feeling that champ with that kind of ability are the most difficult to balance due to that invisible agressive power.

What are your though about one side wall spell?

ps: what I see as old wall is thing like trundle pilar, jarvan ult,... One side wall are thing like braum shield, yasuo wind wall or azir ult

Its something Riot was bound to do eventually, it's very difficult to release new champions without new skill concepts. I mean you can tweak the same type of concept here and there but in order to keep their player base they need to introduce new and fun concepts. In my opinion Azir's one sided wall, the only one that affects champions themselves will take a lot of getting used to. I still see quite a few people on azir's team who still walk around the wall or take longer paths because of it and make split second decisions that dont utilize the wall because well, they're just not used to it yet. After a while people will get used to it and it'll fine.

Old walls can be just as aggressive, they just need to be used slightly differently to be aggressive. Pillar to catch someone out and get him closer, anivia wall someone off from their team, jarvan ulti on anyone really is aggressive.

So I don't see any difference in the two walls, one just allows passing through it by allies.

I like them, and it is possible for them to be OP, but they can be balanced around cooldowns, cost, and duration quite easily.

There is no such thing as a defensive weapon. In the hands of someone pursuing an intent to do harm, there is no such thing as a defensive tool. Any tool used in those circumstances to protect the wielder is used to protect the wielder while they do harm. It is used to further their goal of doing harm. It is used to further their 'offense'.

tl;dr: the 'defensive' nature of previous walls was only ever an illusion
