Deadman's Plate is in a League of its Own

It's not just a statistically better choice than most defensive items, it has more interesting gameplay choices while using it:

  • moving around speeds me up (gotta go fast)
  • moving around builds up a sucker punch on my next empowered attack
  • blowing the sucker punch also slows my target

Then there is the psychology to utilizing these things:

  • do I hold back my empowered attacks to keep the speed buff
  • do I need the buff to maximize escape potential
  • do I risk blowing the buff for max damage and running ahead of the target into enemy territory
  • do I keep the buff just so I can keep up with the target and not use any empowered attacks

Let's not forget the stacking you can get out of item 3078 + item 3742 on champs like Garen all smooshed into his Q. It just feels really good running around in circles to get your stacks back up, especially when in a bush, surprise demacia has never been more liberating.

Deadman's Plate isn't just picked because it might statistically seem better, it is simply one of the most fun designed items in the game, that adds another level of gameplay when built. Build up (investment) and pay off (execution) gives value to decisions, it is the corner stone of great game design; summoners rift is built on this very principle and Deadman's Plate is an item that encapsulates it on a micro scale in comparison.

It doesn't matter how much you nerf this items stats, its design at its core transcends numerical value.

Movement speed is such a good stat in the game and many people still understimate it. Having tons of movement speed compensates a lot the lack of mobility on many champions, and can complement the mobility of other champions. That's why I always use movement speed quintessences on champions like Malzahar and Dr. Mundo. Being able to outrun your opponents can mean the difference between many situations; you being ganked, you catching your opponent, you being able to escape a dangerous situation, etc.

I think that it is the reason why Deadman's Plate is so popular currently. While it doesn't give the best tankyness (Randuin's Omen is actually a better armor item in terms of defense since it reduces attack speed and crit damage) or the best damage (Sunfire Cape is better at damaging a lot of enemies at once, and has waveclear) or the best utility (both Frozen Heart and Iceborn Gauntlet offers CDR and mana, with one also having an extremely good aura, and the other giving a powerful slow and damaging passive that also has decent waveclear) - Deadman's Plate more than compensates all that with mobility. Allowing your champion to be more mobile allows him to do everything better, and to make more plays, and be more difficult to kite.

Exactly, no other defensive item changes things up as much as DMP does.

World Ender3 votes

Exactly. I just recently fell in love with Ekko jungle and have been running movespeed wherever I can get it. Quints, Runic Echoes, Swifties with alacrity and DMP. Over 500 movespeed plus your passive? Ganking heaven.

Nocturne with MS quints and Stormraider's is fucking impossible to escape this patch.

Forget Noc-Noc, I'm busting straight through your front door and into your rib-cage.

Just please allow ranged champs to use the sucker punch T.T

Sucker Punch is easy to counter. Just don't attack them directly

I don't get the downvotes. I want that on my tank Quinn :C why isn't it halved like every other melee consumable on-hit?

Cherysse2 votes

because people are dicks :V I dont care I still think that ranged champs should proc it.

CubedJustice1 votes

I would guess it's because the sucker punch is about half of the melee intended buffs. The goal of the item is to compensate melee champions for having trouble getting in range by providing movement speed and a slow. Ranged champions get half, the movement speed, just not the other half.

While I'm sure there are plenty of people who would want this item to be nerfed since it's so good, how about we buff the other items and make them more interesting instead? The current top comment states how powerful movement speed is as a passive, so what if the other items were revamped with some decision making without simply tuning their numbers around?

Sunfire Cape - new ACTIVE: Launch your aura to a target location (600 range), losing the passive aura and dealing its damage in the target location for 5 seconds. The passive aura is restored after 30 seconds. (Cooldown 60 seconds)

This addresses multiple concerns about this item. First, people are able to remove the aura from themselves so they now are able to avoid drawing aggro to jungle monsters while casually walking through and they won't draw tower aggro when the enemy laner walks into melee range of you. This also gives (the mostly melee) tanks the ability to poke while not being a flat increase to their damage as the damage would be the same as the aura yet remove the aura from themselves should they try to jump on someone. This item now has more choice and is less of a "purchase and forget" item.

Randuin's Omen - Any unit afflicted by the active slow is unable to critically strike for the duration.

Since Randuin's already had an active I didn't make this one as spectacular, but still wanted to double-down on this item's niche of crit reduction. It gives this item a neat support functionality as someone able to affect a carry during a fight would be able to reduce that carry's damage output (if they relied on crit). If the enemy carry happened to get tenacity or Quicksilver, or a support bought Crucible, then that would benefit them by reducing the duration of the debuff. So this item could be used on a melee chaser to slow their advance or used as a melee chaser to reduce the damage of the backline.

Both changes would provide more choice to these items and make them more interesting/dynamic, perhaps enough to compete with Deadman's without changing any of the items' numbers themselves.

They still wouldn't compete. With the game as it is now, things move far quicker than in games past, which means that in order to be able to do everything, you need to be able to move just as quickly. Deadman's and Boots of Swiftness are only popular because right now, going quickly from one place to another is the only thing keeping your towers from eating it with all of the pushing mechanics built in now, not to mention the objectives that keep getting added.

Do i agree with all the ideas

nope

do i think the other items should be made more interesting hell yea

I like omen change. Remove the passive crit reduction and replace it with the active and it would be a slight power increase for the item, but would make it feel much more impactful. The only problem I see is the fact that it's now a massive counter to yasuo because it cuts his damage by over 50%, and it would be easy to reliably land because he has to get close.

Take this toxic ass item out the game, you give immobile champs shit tons of movespeed, like oh garen has trouble getting kited heres dead mans plate now u have no counter play

Just run past everyone do a shit ton of dmg and walk out

rinse and repeat

charcharmunro3 votes

Yeah, I mean, it's not like the DMP stacks are reduced while you're slowed or anything.

ViiLLAiN2 votes

What's that you say slows?

Boots of swiftness? Mercs? I mean I'm pretty sure the dmg is the least of my worries it's the absurd mobility they get that makes it very toxic. Oh and the thread was about garen with DMP do you know what garen a Q does?

charcharmunro2 votes

Also, y'know... Snares. Stuns. Knockups. Knockbacks... Those all exist.

ViiLLAiN1 votes

Coming from an ADC main..... Most adcs don't have hard cc like that. And are completely at their teams mercy if someone doesn't cc that garen.

charcharmunro2 votes

Well, a lot of non-tanky champs are great at taking advantage of uncoordinated teams, too. Yeah, Garen can be hard to pull off somebody. But he's like Volibear or Udyr. Just do what you can to keep them off your backline.

ViiLLAiN1 votes

Lol only way to deal with them in low elo is to not show up until they blow shit on everyone else. Even then sometimes it doesn't work cuz I'm not there to help them

Hotlin3 Fling2 votes

Zilean learn to play this guy. Permanent 99% slow with max cdr. Immobile melee have a bad time

charcharmunro1 votes

Zilean is like the best against AND with Juggernauts. Darius having a hard time catching up to the enemy? Make him zip on down. Enemy Voli keeps rushing into your team? Slow that armored bear down and make him feel that hidden passive.

BetaDude405 votes

Well, yeah. That's kinda how the role is designed. If your team isn't peeling properly, then you die. That's how it works. It isn't a flaw of the item that it brings out more options for them to attack you; it's you or your team's fault for having bad positioning or failing to peel properly.

It's not always broken when the item is doing exactly what it's designed to do. Powerful? Probably. But definitely not broken.

Bear Cavalry Sejuani and Dead Manès Plate Activate W on a near 2 second CD but NEVER auto attack and proceed to run around with bonus movement speed whirling the true ice flail at enemies! (Bear Cavalry because it matches the red theme of Dead Man's plate)

That is the inherent issue with the item. It was made to be "cool" for a special game mode. This coolness makes it slightly overpowered, but it was Riot's choice to include it in the main game.

InHaruhiWeTrust1 votes

this is just a great item. one of the best items riot has ever made. it offers some really cool and fun choices for the player when they finish it while also not being oppressive. i just hope that riot doesn't continue this nonsense of nerfing this item until its worthless(or until its as boring as the alternatives) and instead use it as inspiration for changing or adding items in the future. but, with the addition of item 3147 i have little to no faith in riot in this regard.
