So exactly do you fight back against Tahm Kench at top when you're melee?

Maple Crusader··59 votes·13,436 views

This guy has reached Yorick/Heimer levels of stupid imo. Even if I dodge his tongue and minion spitting, he can just auto-attack me to get his stacks off. If I try to burst him down, he shields himself when he's low and if I try to poke him down, he can just regen his health. Is there anything I can do against him when I can't afford the proper anti-Tahm items?

you can beat him1-6 then after he gets sunfire you cant go near him . if you complain about him being broken you get downvoted by people who have never laned vs him but claim to be knowledgeable on the subject.

Heckin Support15 votes

I made a thread a while ago about this and it got downvoted into oblivion and people responded by bringing up his winrate and how he's melee so it's ok apparently?

A Miss Fortune10 votes

Pretty sure Tahm has the maximum auto attack range for a "melee" champion on top of his abilities all being ranged.

Rew7112 votes

I'm pretty sure he hasn't reached the limit. So far, the furthest range a melee has is 450 held by yours truly, Thresh.

Ariel the Cruel18 votes

Thresh is ranged.

HeadHonchkrow2 votes

I think he was referring to a glitch on the PBE a few weeks back.

Rew7112 votes

Well, now that you mention it... I was on the PBE a few weeks back and saw it so that's why I thought this.

Ultraboomer1 votes

it surprises me how many people don't know this.

Tails Doll1 votes

Because it's not true maybe?

KaisadiIIa1 votes

It is. Claim whatever you want but you can (a) go to any wiki and see he's ranged and (b) build any item that behaves differently if you are ranged, and it will behave as ranged.

Tails Doll1 votes

Shit I thought he was answering to the guy who said Thresh was melee, my bad, I know he is ranged.

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

Probably because there was (is still?) a bug that disables you from buying runnans hurricane. So people think he can't be ranged since he can't buy the ranged only item.

Much confusing. I always get the Thresh's that try to use relic shield thinking he is melee and make me miss a lot of cs lol.

Ultraboomer1 votes

relic shield is alright on thresh because it gives him a small heal. The player just has to be capable of last hitting minions without the execute damage.

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

I know this. You know this. The massive population that thinks Thresh is melee does not know this.

Troll for Trump1 votes

used to. They nerfed it cuz peoplle complained about it, along with a few other nerfs to tone him down.

A Miss Fortune3 votes

Really? I haven't seen many Tahm nerfs at all. I mean you can still build 6 Warmogs and two shot an ADC while putting them under an infinitely long CC chain so I'm assuming Riot hasn't addressed any actual issues.

Durzaka4 votes

ha, try pre 3.

After 3 there is literally nothing you can do to beat him, he just destroys everything.

He is hilariously fun to play and I love him. But good god is he broken.

or people who actually play him and know how broken af that champ is and want him to stay this way

Melledoneus1 votes

It's simple. Wait until he runs out of green mana, then grey mana, then white mana! See, that wasn't so bad!

JAYCCCCCCCCCCCCE1 votes

Bro just kill him, its a support in the top lane.

/s

Tahm brings me night mares in the top lane. Just seeing him in that lane when the game starts make my mad and not even want to play

NemeBro13 votes

Beat the living shit out of him.

Ideally, do it using a champion that can do quick trades before he can eat you, like Wukong (who I've used against Tahm and won lane against). Or use a champion with better sustained damage who doesn't give a fuck about Tahm's tankiness, like Darius or maybe Trundle (not tried this one in lane admittedly). Fiora also works really well, due to her percent health true damage and ability to repel his hard CC.

Tahm's honestly not that hard top lane IMO. He's pretty predictable. Don't get cheesed under his turret.

On fiora, just to let you know, tahms devour doesn't go on cooldown even if you riposte it. You will stun him, but he will be able to devour right after.

That's pretty stupid and weird. I guess it's like wind walling Annie's stun.

But oh well, while he's stunned you can still damage him and then get out of melee ranged with him.

Durzaka4 votes

Tahm actually beats the shit out of Fiora and Darius.

For Fiora, she cant Riposte both his Q stun and his Devour, and it doesnt put Devour on CD. So you simply use the one she doesnt Riposte and continue to win the trade.

Darius he just beats out right if he is competent.

Wukong seems like a great counter though.

I've tried it as Trundle and he's too reliant on auto-attacks to really do anything against Tahm 1v1. I've seen Darius start out well, but eventually get destroyed on more than one occasion. I've never seen a Darius beat Tahm once.

He generally out-trades everyone after he gets 2 items. He just has too much health and his stacks come up way too fast.

Either his damage, tankiness, or utility need to be nerfed. He shouldn't get to do all three well AND be one of the best duelists in the game.

That's because you don't duel tanks. You poke them down, harass them, and wait for them to be low enough to outright kill them. Tahm may have a lot of sustain and a shield, but he can still be poked down by certain champions (Namely Teemo and Gnar)

Not everyone is meant to be taken down via dueling, that'd be boring. Tanks are meant to be taken down with a team or with careful playing.

Consider Caitlyn and Ashe. Ashe will always out trade Caitlyn due to superior sustained damage and her ult, therefore, Caitlyn doesn't duel Ashe outright, instead she utilizes her range and utility to poke Ashe down before butchering her with a Peacemaker or Ace in the Hole.

Similar playing goes with Tahm Kench, he's designed to be obnoxious, hard to stop, and good at eating you alive. So how do you play against him? You don't give him the chance to use his whole kit. To be quite honest, his kit relies on that third stack, and it's entirely possible to keep him from getting it with certain champs like Wukong or Riven. Poke him down, even if it is hard, you have to be relentless, and you have to be smart.

He's not OP, he's obnoxious, but he's not OP. He's very similar to Nasus and Cho Gath in that way.

Lovelle3 votes

Trundle was specifically designed to be able to duel tanks. If he can't 1v1 Tahm, no one can.

I can guarantee you Tahm will be nerfed in the near future.

OneExit7 votes

At the moment TahmKench falls under the Shaco and Riven principle. As to say he's hella fun to play, but total cancer to play AGAINST.

Perhaps you mean: Riven/Yasuo/Illaoi levels of stupid. Heimer is extremely easy to counter.

TurquoiseYoshi19 votes

Heimer is just ass to play against when you don't pick the right champion. Maybe easy to beat, but annoying.

If you include Illaoi and Riven, then Heimer counts.

but heimer is beatable. Dodge the grenade and burst him the fuck down

sir d wreck4 votes

All while getting destroyed by his turrets, and even if you kill him his turrets stay alive and try to finish you off. Heim is beaten be a few mages with good wave clear, but in top lane heim will wreck almost every melee champ's day and once he has ult good luck getting your jungler to even try to gank him.

AlienPrimate2 votes

PickGalio , stand in turrets, use w, press ctrl+4 repeatedly while turrets shoot you, win lane.

riven is god awful top vs these new updates and items. hydra is the worst item to rush anymore because it got nerfed for no reason. rip tiamats passive but YAY ON the new adc items :))))))))))))))

Old Morde wrecked Tahm. Was always my go to against him.

Then they fucked him up.

IcyPepper4 votes

Hope he runs out of mana before you run out of health?

I got nothing, tbh. I don't hate the guy, but I'm not sure how to handle him top.

This is why I never top lane.

Makior723 votes

Same thing you do with any champion that counters you hard. Let them push you to tower and you farm under it. Better to be behind by 10-20 cs than to feed. Also ask jungle or mid to roam top for ganks while your enemy top laner is over extended.

ValyrianBlade8 votes

I don't know how bad laning against him is, but if you're saying any melee champ needs to let him push to tower and just not feed - then that's not balanced. Given that tahm kench is one of the hardest scaling tanks in the game, having an oppressive laning phase on him is unreasonable.

That said i don't know if it's that bad - just that i don't agree with the argument here. I've never played as or against him top.

Orangesilk3 votes

He's not even a tank to begin with since he offers no initiation

ValyrianBlade5 votes

Well his tongue is a slow... but more importantly HIS ULT CAN TELEPORT HIM BEHIND THE BACK LINE.

Like seriously, definition of initiation. Trap the enemy between him and your team.

And he is really highly scaling. Damage built in to his kit. Two health bars that optimizes health stacking. Good amount of CC.

As I said in the first post - I've never actually laned as or against him top lane so I have no idea if OP just doesn't know how to play the lane, but given the advice in the comment I responded to was to just hide under turret and try not to die - that advice can't apply against a champion that scales better than most.
