Why people will always fight over lanes/roles
DISCLAIMER - Just my personal thoughts and feelings on Riot's attempt to make a "better" champ select that i wanted to share with the community but also trying to present it with a bit of depth. Don't hurt me, please! ;_;
No matter what riot implements or changes to queues, people are going to continue to quarrel, steal, dodge, threaten to afk or feed. The only justifiable reason i can think of why this is is because -in order to play certain champions, you require certain lanes/roles-. The meta as we know it divided state between certain champions being tailored to go to lanes for "these types of champions" and the people that refuse to acknowledge the potential they can have outside of these lanes and roles IF they have any of the sort. Therefore if someone sees a champion they want to play they have to consider their options of "where does the meta support play of this champion?" That doesn't only limit their options by the meta, but also by their teams acceptance or refusal to have a champion played in a way or place that was not intended by Riot's conception of it.
-
Bot lane's traditional cookie cutter reserved for long range Auto Attacking champions that exclusively build damage items, and a supportive champion that can heal and/or shield, or tank for the long ranged auto attacker. Can my champion do that?
-
Mid lane's traditional cookie cutter is reserved for AP oriented champions that build up their ability power, or burst oriented nukers and assassins. Can my champion do that?
-
Jungle's traditional cookie cutter is reserved for champions that can self sufficiently farm and sustain hard hitting monsters while also being able to relocate all over the map in effective assistance to their team's opposing lanes. Can my champion do that?
-
Top lane's traditional cookie cutter is (or was as it's highly open to be a wild card for another AD or AP source carry) traditionally reserved for champions that are meant to be relatively tanky, or engaging for their team. Can my champion do that?
None of this is of course set in stone, no im of course not saying that. I've know people to have success on mid Jinx, jungle Tahm, top Braum, bot Anivia (in the carry role, not support). But to follow this meta is the "safe" option, what everyone can be comfortable with no matter the circumstance; it is a direction to follow for possibly favorable outcome. We have "Dark Horse" picks riot tried introducing at one point briefly, and we have innovators like Faker SHOWING that different champions can still be successful outside of their intended comfort zones. But ultimately people simply feel safer, and more trusting of each other when the meta is being followed as strictly as it can.
But then take mobas like Dota, HotS, and even Strife for instance where there isn't as much emphasis on where you need to go in order to play who you want to play (though yes some heroes still perform better in some areas more naturally than others, im aware). What they emphasize is simply bringing your pick's strengths to your team and playing to them, compensating for weakness with cooperation; the lanes they begin in don't matter.
However fancy this new champ select is, hasn't fixed the problem because the emphasis put on where the meta accepts certain things is still present which i feel is what really breeds toxicity.
But again these are simply my personal thoughts on the matter. For those reading the subject, do share yours as well :3
