So I tried out Aatrox and here are my thoughts

##NOTE: I'm not making this to be a post of complaint, i'm just simply stating my opinion on Aatrox after playing him several times.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##PASSIVE: DEATHBRINGER STANCE

  • I don't know why this passive get's consumed when basic attacking minions, because the Cooldown of that is around 20+ secs at level 1.

  • I find that this passive's damage is the only part of his kit that seems notice-able.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##Q: THE DARKIN BLADE

  • This ability feels quite clunky to use, because you always need to use your E to land it properly due to how easy it is to dodge it.

  • It's quite difficult to use this ability because of how each cast has a different range. I assume that this was the ability that introduces the higher skill requirement to his new kit.

  • Sometimes this ability Critically Strikes and sometimes it doesn't, might be a bug perhaps, or maybe not, nothing is certain still.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##W: INFERNAL CHAINS

  • This ability doesn't really feel all that useful aside from the bonus CC that he already has.

  • The damage is really minor.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##E: UMBRAL DASH

  • The passive sustain is somewhat good at later stages of the game, but it's completely incomparable to what current Aatrox's sustain is like (current Aatrox has better sustain).

  • The active dash doesn't make any sense by looking how short the dash is, seems like a massive downgrade of what Dark Flight was. It just feels like it's used to serve to be used mainly as a synergy tool with his Q.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##R: WORLD ENDER

  • Nice Movement Speed boost.

  • The bonus damage is really un-noticeble (just gain a small amount of AD, very tiny).

  • Him having a revive every time he has R up is nice but outside of this and the Movement Speed boost it feels pointless.

https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/rg-champion-aatrox/en_US/3a2cd8032f93d3aadf42219a6c19ccfcc5e7792f/assets/img/global/accents/accent-pullquote.png

##Conclusion

Positives

  • Has a lot of CC to provide for his team.
  • Has potentially more reliable sustain, since now he isn't required to basic attack 3 times to heal anymore.
  • Has some-what more AoE damage.
  • Has some good catching potential with his W.
  • He might be a good jungler, with his AoE damage, Knock Ups and Sustain.
  • When Aatrox revives he can actually move now.

Negatives

  • Quite weak on really close combat.
  • No longer has the ability to duel someone.
  • Q has potential of being good, but currently it offers opponents a window to engage while you cast the ability.
  • W having a similar issue as his E, having no offensive power aside from the CC or having the ability to catch someone.
  • E Active ability potentially too weak of an ability on it's own.
  • Using R feels underwhelming, in terms of offensive power.

i just KNEW people were going to have trouble with his q once i found out the E was the dash that helps him land it. if they just made it so he can move during the skillshot like camille's it would feel better and easier to use/land and wouldn't even need the dash.. They could just give the passive to his E making it a toggle between heal and dmg just like it was except that it works with skillshots as well. Then they could just revert the passive and ult to the way it used to be. If it stays like this he's gonna have a lot of trouble landing that q against melee top laners. I doubt i'll see much of him beyond the first few weeks he was released.

Automated Riven12 votes

Wait, he can't move during his q? That turns him from possibly good to downright aweful.

Jarring10 votes

yep. lol. definitely the number 1 problem with him. i thought you could move too, but apparently that was his dash ability "e" which makes him look even more clunky to play than he already is. what blows my mind is there are rioters actually supporting this idea even with this heavy mobile top laner meta we got going on right now. he's going to be dumpstered to bottomshelf as soon as he gets released.

Automated Riven5 votes

I was already planning on using riven as a counter pick. But this just mean he literally never does anything but aa her. It's not even a skill matchup if he can't move.

Jarring3 votes

yeah, no, pretty much any heavy melee engage is going to make mincemeat out of him.. they probably won't even have to be especially mobile either. Literally all they'll have to do is walk up to them, which is exactly what aatrox used to want them to do...now he's going to be doing all the running...out of his lane and into jg. :P he might have some ganking potential but other than that, he's gonna be useless as a top laner imho. Also the passive that does dmg/gives range is supposedly on a really long timer so you'll only be seeing one of those per fight. gonna blow lol.

Automated Riven2 votes

Honestly if you they just allowed him to move during the cast he would probably be good. The knockup chain would be real tho.

I can see him being pretty good against sion tho.

thats y they dont allow him to move w/o E during Q, it would be OP CC chaining

Jarring3 votes

i don't think it would be incredibly overpowered.. he'd still suffer somewhat by anything that can easily get and stay in his face at all times. fiora would still probably wreck him with a good riposte.. all the usual metas like irelia and camille will probably be able to shut him down as long as they are competent.. all it would really be doing is giving him pretty much the exact same amount of movement he gets from the e dash, except it won't be clunky and then you could just remove it entirely. Then he'll actually be damned good like he sounds like he is on paper. Just making it so that it takes a huge amount of "skill" and luck for his kit to be good isn't good design imho. This isn't the right mindset to go into making new characters.

What annoys me with comments like yours is that no matter in which direction Riot moves in, people still fucking shit on them. Hey, Riot isn't adding more mobility somewhere: that champion is going to be inherently bad in meta matchups because they aren't mobile enough. Riot adds a more mobile champion: "oh god, you're just adding to the mobility creep meta, gg". Riot isn't doing anything: "gg, Riot doesn't give a shit about what we say".

You people are impossible to please as Riot can't change anything because every direction is a minefield.

LichKing2341 votes

Tomoe when people complain its not throwing shade at riot we are criticizing cause we want them to do better and from the way the meta is he will get Dumbed by almsot every other top laner. if he cant move with his Q and its significantly reduced if you dont hit the edge witch can make his dmg output very inconsistent at-least old aatrox was consistent. in a real game unless the enemy is down right Retarded or dumb your not hitting the edge must of the time. it makes his Q extremely telegraphed

but maybe im wrong i cant play the new aatrox since no pbe account so ill wait till live before i say anything else and try it [slayer-jinx-wink] out*[slayer-jinx-wink]*

Tomoe Gozen2 votes

And PBE is not a valid representation of Aatrox's gameplay experience. PBE is not a good server when you're looking to finetune a champion. Most of the people there already play with a ton of lag since it's one server for both NA and EU. I play on 200 ping there so i can't accurately judge whether his mobility is clunky or not because i'm already clunky enough due to lag.

And it's not like we haven't seen these "complaints" before. Something feels bad on PBE, people complain before the right time, Riot buffs it, gets to Live, becomes the top pick for their role and lane. Then Riot either has to hotfix it if it's an immediate issue or they do it after a patch or two. Secondly, if the numbers are wrong for the "right spot" and "in the face" AoE, that can be buffed appropriately when tested on Live.

And what's even more stupid is that this is something new that people have to learn and the very first day of the reveal (and people playing him for the first time), the overall "experience" is that he's clunky... What did these people based their assumptions on? On 1+ game and high lag, to accurately judge his mobility and player skill? Aatrox has 3 different AoE indicators for his Q, with the third one being a circular AoE that can very much hit people close to him, if they're stupid enough to duel inside his "weaker" double Q ranges. He has two mini dashes as well.

Jarring1 votes

that was just the icing on the cake...he's going to get owned by the toplane meta regardless. i am just concerned about him being accessible. making it harder to land his Qs in an already bad match-up is just horrible design. I came up with an interesting design awhile back that would straight up own the mobility meta, and it's so easy. The idea has been in mobas since Dota Allstars before LoL was even in beta, but it's never been in this game. Why? The original skill is Bloodseeker's(from dota) ultimate that causes people to bleed and take damage based on distance they travel. They could just make another champion with a passive like darius's bleed that stacks and does dmg based on the stack per distance traveled = hard counter vs mobility. It would be SO good for this meta, and exactly what the game needs right now.

his Q was Always hard to land tho, now he's got three chances to land it.

Boulderox3 votes

even if you miss the edge knock up, it does damage in the area still, you aren't completely neutered, it separates the good from the bad.

Jarring6 votes

it is why i was thinking triforce might be ok on him as first item, but at the same time, the dmg is "SIGNIFICANTLY" reduced if not hit on the edge.. hitting the edge is obviously what will make him competent in the game vs other champions who can otherwise do the same things much better. What makes him unique is the knockups, but actually landing them is just going to be a huge chore vs players who aren't totally braindead.. not to mention if they also play meta champions like irelia and camille on top of it. On paper he sounds awesome, but i doubt he'll be actually good in practice.

Ths ult isn't flat AD. It's 20% more total AD.

New Aatrox sucks. His ult is worse than his previous ult, his Q is fucking garbage in close range (Riot fell for the skillshot meme again), E doesn't do anything, W needs number buffs.

Why the fuck did they rework a perfectly fine champion? I don't know. Why rework an auto attacker into a caster? That's just disrespect to everyone who likes Aatrox.

Jarring17 votes

i think his ult getting the ability to reposition during his revival time is a huge buff..

Bc players like me want a fun new champ that takes skill. Keep in mind some of us feel bound to "easy" champs, and want something more exciting. I personally think the idea of having basically Riven Q but it TAKES SKILL sounds like so much fun to play. As for why theyre reqorking him--- its bc his counterplay is so small. His Q is pretty fast and if youre good there isnt much the enemy can do about you diving them and everything. If you dont like skillshots ushould prolly quit league lol bc thats the direction the game is going. Just gives you a chance to dodge/skill express.

Only thing imma agree with is that the E range is seriously laughable lol. Havent peeked at his numbers yet tho.

And as far as disrespecting aatrox players, for one thereare very very few. and second, im sure theyre excited to maintain a RELATIVELY similar playstyle while being given room to express their skill. Currently the major skill exprression on aatrox is timing your W. Thats boring. Get ready for a battle if ur picking up this champ. Im hyped to try it myself.

AirKingNeo2 votes

The E is 15-20% true spell vamp as a passive, then a tiny dash you can use during Q that gives 15-55 AD for 2 seconds.

Not to mention they just made him a generic, edgy kid obsessed with war, killing, and being a "demon" when he was originally a more poetic incarnation of war.

A duelist who can't duel is just icing.

RocketRelm3 votes

Honestly, while I dislike the generic rage stuff and anger, I do like some of the stuff they did. Like his interactions with other darkin, and his contemplations of falling into corruption and becoming a void creature.

Which admittedly really feels out of theme with the rest of his presented character.

as it currently stands he gets murdered by everyone and can't even catch a darius.

His passive proccing on minions really sucks, it should only proc on champions... it at least needs to be like gangplank passive and be very obvious when his passive is up.

His q seems triple bad; 1. He can't move 2. You got to hit the edge 3. It's telegraphed. They need to make him be able to move, increase the edge hotbox, or make the skills faster, as is he's way to hard too land anything.

He also feels like he should have a better range for his autos.

Q - This ability feels quite clucky to use, because you always need to use your E to land it properly due to how easy it is to dodge it.

I think thats the point, it can deal nice AoE dmg and heals so it should be a bit hard to hit, but ur E helps so thats the trade off.

W - The damage is really minor.

the dmg is minor BECAUSE of the CC it provides ON TOP of his Q CC, thats alot of CC, and for a pull on a guy whos already dealing lots of dmg through AA's and Q i would not like W as a pull dealing a lot of dmg since it makes it too easy for him to finish of targets once they are back in range of his Q.

E - The passive sustain is somewhat good at later stages of the game, but it's completely incomparable to what current Aatrox's sustain is like (current Aatrox has better sustain).

Thats because he heals on EVERYTHING now, every AA, every Ability, not just every 3rd AA. And with lifesteal items it would only be increased MORE.

The active dash doesn't make any sense by looking how short the dash is, seems like a massive downgrade of what Dark Flight was. It just feels like it's used to serve to be used mainly as a synergy tool with his Q.

Now this i think i can sort of agree with. While Dark flight's range was longer, it had a long cast time and could be interrupted. The E is shorter but 2 cast means you can split the movement up and change directions fast, it also means u can jump 2 wall instead of one. Its also faster and that means less chance of getting interrupted. On its own the new E has trade offs compared to Dark Flight. But compare new E + new Q and i think the combo is superior to Dark Flight, as just a simple singular cast of E+Q has comparable range, and knock up, yet is faster, and that means less interruptable.

One thing that I do think would have been cool was if they extended the E range during the ult

R

His ult is mainly about the revive more than anything else. The revive is a REALLY strong ability and take a HUGE chunk out of his power budget, so it would make since that the AD boost feels a bit weak...Because its mainly about the revive

RocketRelm3 votes

Yeah. The fact that it gives permanent 240 move speed out of combat means you can Quinn your way into fights, or chase really well. It has 12 second duration too.

The biggest reason revives are either worthless or meh is because you're stationary and out of the action. But this revive. is fast, and you can move. You no longer have the stupid situation where when you Rez all your targets are 600 units away from you and you need to reclose the distance.

ChaosThief1 votes

Not just the fact that your targets are 600 units away, but it was basically a zhonya that activated when you died; people like Caitlyn would just drop a trap on where you were going to revive and you could do nothing as you got snared by it and took an empowered attack. How champions like mages could toss out their CC spell exactly when you would get up and you couldn't dodge it.

In other words, it went from "only really useful when both of us die in laning and I have this" to something that can be much more helpful.

RocketRelm3 votes

Yeah. I feel like people are really, really underselling the strength of the ult, simply because we've never had anything like it before. The closest comparisons are "Sion passive, but he's invulnerable for a short while", and "Kled dismount, but it takes a lot longer and is mobile". It's honestly one of the strongest ults I've seen in this game, excluding global teleportation ults and giant AoE ults.

Zeromatsu3 votes

I have not played him myself yet, but his numbers seem fine?

Passive up to 16% max health dmg is huge.

Q has 80% scaling which makes it really good to use, especially since you get even more dmg for every additional cast and if you hit the marked area. He probably needs to build more ad now.

W dmg is meh, cc is not bad.

E is not just the dash: It gives you 20% physical dmg healing, so EVEN FROM SKILLS. Combine that with Deaths dance which wasn't even worth getting before and u will be a beast. On top of that you even gain up to 55! AD, which again increases your Q dmg (80% scaling)

And his R gives him ad too... You can control the Revive unlike before.

Tbh all the negative points some of you posted are part of his "counterplay"... If he didn't had some weaknesses he would be another irelia/camille or even darius like bully none wants in his games.

For me atleast, he looks not bad.

Pika Fox3 votes

Q doeant "crit", the crit numbers are used in abilities that deal bonus damage under certain conditions, like karthus Q on single target.

Aatrox Q "crits" when the knockup zone hits.

FlameHalbrdOkido2 votes

I was hoping that they would give him a blood related passive like this:

Passive Darkin Blade: Each ability eviscerates Aatrox's target(s) leaving a pool of blood for every champion/large monster struck in a random location within 300 units of the unit. If Aatrox walks over this pool of blood he will consume it healing himself. If an enemy champ walks over a blood pool they will destroy it. Blood pools last 6 sec. Aatrox's abilities will automatically collect Blood Pools if their AoE's intersect. Every 3rd AA deals bonus damage and eviscerates the unit if its a champion or large monster.

hopefully the next darkin will get something like this As it adds more nuance and counterplay/outplay to the passive.

VoraciousX2 votes

You missed out that his E also gives him AD when used. I think late game with a full recommended build in practice tool, I got 40 AD when I used E. As for the critical strikes on his Q, I think it happens when you hit the edge.

ChaosThief2 votes

I think the Q critically striking is likely just the indicator that you hit the bonus damage area. The W is also intended to do low damage because it basically locks an enemy into an area if they can't escape fast enough, which has to take up some of the ability's power budget.

If the stuff I saw on the wiki is already correct, then the ultimate providing 35 AD probably means that this ability was designed to give damage heavy Aatroxes the ability to survive (the revive portion) and tank-based Aatroxes a damage boost and speed?

I was wondering, what kind of build did you run on the new Aatrox? What is the focus that you aimed for when playing him (damage focus, tank focus, some mix?)

CapnMorganFr3man2 votes

I think everyone's forgetting the qs might be easy to dodge in a 1v1 scenario, but in a teamfight where theres 4 other champions to worry about 3 chances at an aoe catch are pretty solid no matter how clunky they are.

Handin Out Naps2 votes

I personally think he is going to be a great champion. I've been playing him only jungle though since I really dont enjoy top lane. HIs clears are good, ganks are decent and can be good if you do them right. I dont know what his gameplay fantasy is supposed to be, but personally when I play him I feel like I'm just in the middle of the teamfight swinging my sword like a maniac and having fun. I think he is going to be played very tanky with items like cleaver, trinity, or titanic into tank. Also if you pop your ult kinda early and have a spirit visage and revitalize you are going to heal a fuck ton of hp when you revive. I also think his e feels great. It has great synergy with q and lets him get over thin walls and still have another charge. I still have to try him full tank though, might be good with all the cc he can put out. Also you prob wanna try to get 40% cdr on him. Idk I like him, but people think he isnt that great. We will see I suppose.
