Last night, I traded with a guy who wasn't confident in his abilities to support, thinking I would do a better job as support. I feel that if this situation happens, the game should be able to detect that you went support and will give you autofill protection. I'm not sure if this is already a thing, but if it isn't, I think should be a thing.

The game doesn't particularly care who plays what role when it decides who gets Autofill protection post-match, it just looks at what people queued as and, in the case they're filled or auto-filled, what role they got.
And, while yes, it would be nice for every instance of someone playing Support to grant autofill protection, it's best to understand this: The only thing you can actually switch in Champion Select is your Champion, not your role. If you get Jungle and you decide to swap positions with your Support, you are, technically, still Jungle. And personally, I feel like this is still a good functionality, even though it does penalize voluntary role-breaking into Support.
