Riot, now that Shen is purely melee, can we make his E hitbox larger?

Melledoneus··132 votes·28,857 views

It's just frustrating to see an enemy who you clearly hit with your hitbox and model walk away as if your E was low on their priorities list. I've passed over enemies multiple times, and times that my taunt looks like it should have landed it did not do so.

Please, Riot, you took away his only range, at least give us a more reliable CC. It's his staple move, and it feels weaker than ever.

Hello Melledoneus and other people that have commented about this.

I looked into it with the designer of the Shen rework and I think we found the issue!

Without going deep into what was going on we did in fact change Shen's taunt and that is not what we wanted. The range was a little off at the end, not so much the width. I think that is caused more by Shen's model being a bit bigger but yes, the end point wasn't where we wanted. We have made a few changes to it which I hope fix the problems

Hold on just a little bit longer, I apologize for the mistake and thank you for bringing this attention to the issue! You guys are fantastic, thank you!

Did anything happen involving E into Flash? Sometimes it works and some times it doesn't despite me appearing to do it correctly and I never had many problems with it prior to the rework. This might just be the same problem due to the hit box "appearing" smaller, but his taunt does feel more clunky to use as a whole.

This fix should also help the E flash, let me know if it doesn't. :D

Awesome job with a fairly timely response... especially considering you took the time to go to the source for an answer instead of just quickly tossing some B.S on here. Thank you for that!

Would love to get some feed back on the other issues, mainly why a Champion that was both Viable and Versatile in Pro Play and who was neither over nor under powered was even targeted for a Rework.

I mean, this is after a Season of Shen being Top, Jungle and Support in Pro Play, not being Over Picked/Over Banned and with neither to high or to low of a Win Rate.

He seems, really, to have been the most Balanced of Champions with a Versatility not often seen in League... and that has been changed by this Rework. So some are curious to why he was targeted for a Rework over the many other Champions that actually NEED one.

The only issue on Old Shen was the AP Scaling on his W Shield... which was easily solved by shifting the Scaling to HP or Armor/MR.

The entire rework boggles my mind...

Then adding the entirely non-Ninja aspect of some huge sword he has to move around and manipulate to be able to do any real damage (and then the Damage IS to much).

Just greatly confused by this entire change.

Because he had the problem of being a brick wall to go against top lane, as well as not having an identity fitting for a defense oriented ninja, they saw opportunity to fix these things with smaller changes and took it.

Far from most balanced.

KillerKell8 votes
  1. Malphite isn't a brick wall in Top Lane? Alistar isn't a brick wall in Top Lane? We already have Brick Walls in Top Lane, so what's the issue with Shen being a Brick Wall?

  2. How did his identity not fit a defensive oriented ninja? If by Identity you mean Kit, everything about his Kit was designed for a Defensive Oriented Ninja, and nothing in his Lore suggests he isn't a Defensive Oriented Ninja if you meant Lore as Identity. His Passive was there to ensure he could have some form of Damage without having to much damage, since his Defense and Utility are worth so much giving him a Nuke doesn't make sense... but using your ability to Tank and to Weave in and out of battle buying time with Sustain and Shield allowed you to get that Passive Damage off. Now it's just a big Nuke IF you get your Sword placed in the right spot at the right time. Why, again, does Shen need a Nuke?

  3. Most Balanced was a bit of hyperbole, but he was a very balanced Champion overall. We can look at many things combined to get to this. He was Versatile, both in Build and Role. Equally effective in Top, Jungle or Support and easily customized to be Pure Tank, Brawler, Duelist, Split Pusher or Utility (or Hand Grenade, but not a viable Competition Build) simply by changing build.

So we have Versatility of Role and Build to suggest his Balance. He's not forced into any one Lane, any one Role, or even any one Build. He's very Flex.

Then we have the addition of him being used in Pro Play while not nearing the 100% Pick/Ban that would strongly suggest being OP... and virtue of being selected at a fair rate means he's no UP either.

Then we have the solid Win Rate, not so high as to suggest OP and not to low as to suggest UP.

In the end of it all, I think that SCREAMS Balance.

Players are begging for more Decisions, for more Choices that Matter... for more Versatility.

And we go and pigeon hole a Champion that was extremely Versatile in Lane, Role and Build Options.

Seems to be way off the mark.

You've failed to really show any real problems with Old Shen.

Silents4294 votes

Naming other champions with problems doesn't exempt others, Neither Alistar or Malphite are resourceless or all that strong at dueling.

KillerKell9 votes

So we just shouldn't have Tanks at all, then? It's not that Alistar and Malphite have a 'problem' being un-movable... that's their ROLE. That's the ENTIRE INTENT of those Champions, like Taric.

Also Energy IS a Resource. Go ahead and miss your Shadow Dash and see how much you can do with your Abilities. To act like Energy isn't spent, and doesn't need to be renewed, is pure ignorance.

Silents4293 votes

Let's be real here, "Energy" isn't much of a resource, it's used to prevent endless spam in short time frames, it isn't like mana.

Shen can keep throwing his Q out every moment it's up and never run out of energy.

I don't know where you got the anti tank stuff from.

Shen has endless free poke and sustain, he was also a great duelist. This is a combo that's quite unfair.

KillerKell3 votes

No, Energy isn't like Mana. And neither is Rage. But they ARE Resources, and you CAN run out in times where you need it most. Like I said... try missing your Shadow Dash and see just how much of a Resource Energy is.

Shen can keep throwing his Q... like Veigar can keep tossing his Q. If Veigar doesn't use any other ability he can just sit in lane and toss Q pretty much forever... and he's a Mana Champion.

His Poke also isn't free, and he ONLY gets Sustain for Basic Attack what he Q'd. So if I Q a Minion, you Trade me... as I either have to hit you or choose to hit the Minion for some Sustain. If I Q you, you back off. So now I can't get Sustain while I farm.

There was nothing free about his Q, and Shen had to constantly make decisions about how to apply the Q.

It's funny that the ONLY way he can Sustain is to Basic Melee Attack, so either he has to Trade with a Champion or leaves himself open to be traded while Sustaining off a Minion... and you think this is somehow to strong and unfair.

Also, the only reason Shen COULD duel WAS the Sustain. Without it, he couldn't duel... so much to the fact that to make him able to Duel now they give him a Nuke for playing the Sword in the right position. A Nuke. WTF should Shen have a Nuke? He shouldn't, but to be able to Duel now he has to have it, because he lacks to Sustain.

Silents4291 votes

He also heals from killing units with his Q

Shen was to safe in lane with a lot of free poke and dueling potential.

This is why he was changed. I don't really care if you disagree this was the reason given by Riot, I agree with them, and the changes happened.

KillerKell3 votes

He did not have 'free poke'.

He paid for his Poke in a variety of ways, which I've been over and over but will go over once again.

He paid a price in Energy, for one. It was a small price, and as long as he put Basic Attacks on something he could get that Energy back... but that's not free.

Also, you could Trade from Range with Shen if you had a Ranged Ability in return. Darius can hit you with the edge of his Q, Shyvana could hit you were her Ranged Ability, Sion with either of his, so you could indeed Trade meaning he wasn't getting 'free poke'.

Also, if it was Poke, meaning no Engage following, he loses his Regen from that Q... that's a Cost.

His Q was far from free, and it's highly short sided to look at it as such.

Shen was Safe in lane... and he could Duel. This is an issue... how? Plenty of Champions are Safe in Lane and can Duel.

Just because a reason is given doesn't make the reason RIGHT... which is why we have DISCUSSION.

So frankly, I don't care that you don't care that I disagree.

Silents4294 votes

You have a very bias perspective.

KillerKell3 votes

In what way?

No where did you dispute or debunk any of what I said.

You called his Q 'free poke'... that is a biased statement. It's far from free, from Resources to Opportunity Cost.

Then you say he was Safe in Lane and could Duel. To which I ask, what's the issue there? Lot's of Champions are Safe in Lane and can Duel. Tanks generally are safe, and generally can duel well because they reduce so much damage that their lower damage can add up.

Then you say they gave a reason... to which I say it doesn't make the reason correct.

None of this do you dispute or debunk, instead you side step. I'll assume that's because you have no sound logic to counter any of my statements.

Silents4293 votes

I'm not debating over this.

I like you! Preach it brother! these guys think energy is resourceless. It angers me to hear this when you energy users can go oom through the game just by spamming their abilities and not completing their energy regain tasks. Unlike mana users who can pretty much cover the rift with spells lategame before recalling.

KillerKell6 votes

It amazes me that people really think Energy isn't a Resource, or that it can't be expended leaving a Champion up a creek. Blows my mind.

And there are 0 Items (though we do have Runes) to increase the Energy Pool, so you hold that limitation all game, where like you say an AP can stack enough Mana AND Mana Regen to not need to back late game, not even including if you give them a Blue.

Where's the 'Blue Buff' for Energy Users, after all?

So no In Game Items, no Buffs... no nothing for Energy Users... while Ability Power gets a way to increase their cap (buy more Mana) and ability to Regen, and a Buff specifically for it.

Atanchan3 votes

Those things would literally defeat the entire purpose of Energy, being that it's a short-term resource based around chaining and spacing your abilities properly.

Mana gets all that because it's a time limit before a champion becomes literally a right-click and low mana can even screw some right-clickers. Very few, if any, mana users are actually affected by it in a short-term fight, so mana items are based around laning, ganking, sieging, not fighting. You only get better a fighting by investing into mana if you actually have damage that scales with mana.

KillerKell3 votes

See, this doesn't make sense. You can waste your Energy just like you can waste your Mana, ending up with a Right Click Shen. Trust me, a Right Click Shen isn't very fun to be.

It's a Time Limit before the Energy Spammer runs out as well, especially something like a Shen missing an E.

Yet with Mana they can acquire such a large pool or some much Mana Regen that Backing isn't an issue in the Late Game... an Energy User never reaches such a point.

It's also not about Shorter Cool Downs, seeing how Shen has 2 CDs that are Not Ults and are Each 18 Seconds.

The fact is, Mana Users tend to bag on Energy Users... things like "Energy isn't a Resource" being a prime example. Then they continue by saying things like "Free Q Poke" in regards to Old Shen.

I don't even know why it exists, be there is an elitist attitude that exists about this.

Atanchan2 votes

Right click Energy user lasts for like three seconds before they can continue using their abilities, except maybe a new Shen I'm not really familiar with his new costs.

Without shelling out for decent mana regen, it tends to take upwards for like 10 seconds for an ability to be usable after running out of mana, and that's with good base regen and low mana costs.

And, yes, mana users being able to eliminate this weakness is kind of the point. Again, mana is a long-term resource. Without proper Energy management, you're meant to be deprived of your abilities for a short but crippling amount of time during a fight, usually after tossing out like two abilities. Mana users never have this issue. Mana users instead have the issue of just flat-out running dry, which doesn't happen in fights but happens during periods of time where they'll actively be using their mana and they can't head to somewhere to recover it. Thing is, if you're not actually going to be in a place for that long, then mana servers no purpose and mana users might as well be resourceless until they're stuck in another long-term situation.

And, yes, Shen Q poke was free. Literally? No, but unless you brainlessly E'd immediately after Qing you'd not lose anything but a short cooldown you'd only otherwise use for last hitting anyway. Sure, it required you to get kind of somewhat close to your opponent, but if you were actually against someone who could punish you for that then fighting them was usually a poor idea in the first place.

KillerKell2 votes

Again, Shen's Poke was not free in any form or way.

He Q's. Now he has to Basic Attack to Regain Energy. He can't just sit back and gain it, he MUST Basic Attack.

So to recover the Energy he spent to use a Q he MUST get in Melee Range of SOMETHING, leaving him open to be Traded or Engaged upon. How is that Free?

Ziggs chucks a Q, retreats a mile under Turret. THAT is more Free than Shen, because over time with Ziggs doing nothing he gets that Q Mana back, and without risking taking Damage.

So there was (1) Resource Cost in Energy, (2) the Cost of putting yourself into Melee Range to Regain Energy and (3) the Opportunity Cost of not being able to use your Q for another method (if you Poked with Q, you now can't Sustain with Q or Last Hit with Q... because you used that Q to Poke).

Between the actual Resource Cost, the method of Regaining the Resource, and the Opportunity Cost... those that 'spammed Q' were simply Bad Shen Players. It was in no way even close to being "Free".

Now unless you can debunk any of those 3 Points numbered, it's rather foolish to call Shen's Poke 'Free'.

Atanchan5 votes

... You do realize that Energy regens, right? And it's like, +10 per second?

There was exactly zero need to use his refund mechanics while his Q was rank 1, because of its 6 second cooldown and 60 energy cost. Combine this with his Q being literally his only thing to poke with, and there's exactly no reason to get out of position while harassing your opponent. Sure, its cooldown goes down ... but then you just have to wait 0.5 seconds more for each rank you had in it. And that's only if you were using it on cooldown, because every tiny space between you not using it meant your energy was rapidly returning.

And even if the energy consumption was much more extreme, the fact that it's, well, energy means that Shen could easily do the same as Ziggs, but return to doing what he was doing far faster because 10 is a far bigger number than 3.92. Which is Ziggs's mana per second at level 18. If we're talking about spamming Qs during the laning phase to last hit and harass, Shen's only disadvantage is that he has far less range and can't splash off of minions.

Shakespony1 votes

So are you a good shen player then? Calling other's bad. Get over yourself. Time's change, not every champ can be like vlad and never get reworked.

KillerKell2 votes

I'm not sure where you are going with this.

I said a 'Good Shen' doesn't mindlessly spam his Q. This is true.

A 'Good' any Champion doesn't mindlessly spam his Abilities either.

If they are Good, they actually have intent behind their actions when using abilities.

I found this rather self evident.

So yes, if some one is mindlessly spamming their abilities, they are the definition of a bad player on that Champion. They should learn to set up their abilities, how they interact so they purposefully chain their abilities, and the costs of using their abilities in certain situations (using my Abilities now will Harass my Enemy, but put me out of Resource... and my Jungle is coming in 10 Seconds because he pinged and is finishing his Buff first... so obviously, don't mindlessly blow your Abilities their, wait for the Jungle and use them to help destroy your Opponent).

You took a really weak stance. It was rather absurd.

Yes, those that mindlessly spam are Bad.

I'm a VERY bad Lucian. Lucian main's watching me play probably cry and laugh at the same time. A large part of that is I'm very uncomfortable on how his Abilities work, when to use which ones, and when to set up plays with his Proc off Shen. I'm all over the place with his Abilities, and I need a lot more work with it. I'm bad at Lucian because of this.

See, not that hard.

With Shen, I had an extremely good understanding of his Abilities which gave me an edge against my Opponents (which my 61.2% Career Ranked Win Rate with Shen attests to) allowing me to defeat Champions that Shen generally shouldn't be able to defeat because I simply had more Skill on my Champion than they had on theirs. Because, I knew how best to invest his Abilities while often they took something considered OP and would mindlessly spam theirs.

Proper Usage of Abilities IS a mark of being a Good Player on a Champion.

I expect no one to excuse me for my horrid Lucian play... it's on me, I need to learn the Champion better. Just like I expect you not to excuse others that happen to be bad BECAUSE they mindlessly spam their Abilities.

Shakespony1 votes

However shen gets all his energy back after using his abilites so how do you run out of energy as shen without wasting your spells? You get rewarded for proper spell usage as an energy user while also getting punished harder for using it in a bad way.

KillerKell2 votes

True of any Resource User.

All Champions are rewarded in some form or another for Proper Ability Usage.

Which is why it's sort of a requirement to be GOOD at a Champion, which some how you took offense to.

TurquoiseYoshi4 votes

What I saw it as was that Shen's Q was way too binary and didn't offer anything unique the the game (especially when Shen has way too amazing trading with it), and W was pretty much nothing important. The rework tries to keep the interesting parts of Shen while taking out the outdated, annoying mechanics.

Balance is not the first thing to note when it comes to who needs a rework. It's their kit. Shen's kit had two interesting features that were kept exactly the same and two that were very simple and unnecessary that were scrapped. It keeps all of the things that made him Shen, and got rid off all of the things that didn't need to exist.

And for Shen, there are literally no available talks about theme. Heck, he might have gotten closer to his theme, if just because his new W is somewhat of a hiding shield instead of a flat shield. The problem with Shen is the same as the one with Swain (and the reworked Cassio) when Riot reworks him: The champion's kit and the reasons people play the champion are nothing alike to their theme. Riot then has to choose whether they want to keep the kit, like with Shen, or work with the theme, kinda like how Sion's rework made him a new persona and then gave him a kit to work with that.

Would love to get some feed back on the other issues, mainly why a Champion that was both Viable and Versatile in Pro Play and who was neither over nor under powered was even targeted for a Rework.

His playstyle was static, one dimensional, and exceedingly awkward. The only two mechanics in his kit that had any synergy was his taunt and his ultimate, and while I do love Shen for what he is, his mechanics felt really stale in terms of what the champion design team is pumping out right now.

He seems, really, to have been the most Balanced of Champions with a Versatility not often seen in League... and that has been changed by this Rework. So some are curious to why he was targeted for a Rework over the many other Champions that actually NEED one.

Shen DID need the rework. His heal was an oppressive ability in lane, so it was nerfed to abysmally low levels, while his laning phase resembled that of a poke tank rather than a traditional dueling tank. Additionally, his identity as a peeling tank was rather forced, but with the addition of Spirit's Refuge his niche is now more clear than ever.

Then adding the entirely non-Ninja aspect of some huge sword he has to move around and manipulate to be able to do any real damage (and then the Damage IS to much).

Shen is purely melee, so much like champions like Shyvana and Nasus he's easily kited. The most interactive part of his kit is his main engage, and his sword adds to the mix to focus on positioning and alertness. Players are rewarded heavily for dodging Shen's dash, and being able to walk away from his engage means that he will be vulnerable and lower on his energy resources.

Just greatly confused by this entire change.

I was at first, but then I played it and slowly grew to love it. It just makes sense now. His dueling potential lies in his dodge mechanic, his %HP buff for dueling bruisers in the top lane (and those pesky camps), and his taunt is used as a tool to get good damage off on opponents and set up kills. His defensive capabilities also lie in his dodge (for his squishies allies, especially against assassins like Rengar), his taunt, and his ultimate, just like before. He feels much more faithful to what he was originally supposed to be, and my boys at the design team did a mighty fine job!

KillerKell2 votes

First off, thank you for staying on topic and this not turning into some flame match. It's been really great conversation.

  1. You say his play style was static and one-dimensional, but I disagree. I also found nothing at all awkward about it. I also feel all 4 of his Abilities, and his Passive, layered with each other and were complimentary.

He could be Defensive, waiting to bait you under Turret or waiting to Ult to an Team Mate being dove. He could be Offensive, diving under your Turret with a Taunt or Ulting onto a Diving/Ganking Champion to further increase the pressure. He could stick back and peel for the ADC or he could instead Split Push solo with Global Pressure.

Nothing One-Dimensional about that at all.

His Q gave him Sustain, but only if he Basic Attacked what he Marked... which lead to the eventually and consistent proc of his Passive to boost his generally low Damage to a healthy level IF he stayed engaged... with a Shield that allowed him to stay engaged for both the Regen and the Passive Damage. His Taunt off-set his lower damage to buy him time to get to that Passive, while also being a great Peel or Engage in Team Fights. The Ult generally worked with all of that, as he'd need all of that whether Ulting for Defensive or Offensive.

I fail to see where these things don't all display a synergy together.

  1. I think when you get to 'niche' is where I have the issue. The thing was, Shen was VERSATILE, not a Niche Champion. He could hold MANY Roles. He could do MANY things. THAT was the appeal. I do agree the changes absolutely put him in a niche... but that's exactly the OPPOSITE of what we should be doing.

Players are crying out for Less Meta, for More Diversity, for OUR Choices to matter. Shen allowed us to make choices... choice of Lane, choice or Role, choice of Build. Now, that's taken away from him.

For me, ESPECIALLY in the current state of people hating Meta and wanting to bring more variety and options to the game, sticking a Champion like Shen into a 'niche' is the absolute worst thing they could do.

Shen didn't need a Rework, he simply needed some adjustment to his Q and his W. Either up the Heal and lower the Damage (most sense, going with the Sustain) or drop the Heal and up the Damage (because, for some reason, people always think Tank/Utility needs more damage). His W just needed a different Scaling instead of AP.

That's it, Nerf/Buff to get things in the right spot... and even that wasn't NEEDED, it just would have been an Improvement.

  1. Nothing in 3 is any different from Old Shen. If Shen missed his E, he'd be lucky to have the Energy to toss a Q... and unless he got Rylia's why even bother with it? So you were rewarded heavily for dodging it.

  2. I have issue with the %HP Buff for Damage... Shen didn't need more damage, so why all this focus on pouring more damage into him? And he certainly didn't need Burst Damage. The only thing even remotely neat about the Rework is the Dodge Ability. I give them that... but why not just drop the old Shield for the new Dodge?

Again, we can obviously agree to disagree... and I am limited since I haven't played the New Shen. As I said, I may fall in love with the New Shen, I just doubt it will be as deep a love as I have for the Old Shen.

I'm not saying he's terrible, I'm in no position yet to say such. But I am saying he seems clearly limited from his former version, and I dislike that.

Shen does that better now since he does more damage and trades better against melee opponents.

His Q is much stronger against them.

NoPaxt4 votes

He doesn't because his taunt only works 50% of the time, and Spirit Blade is a useless passive. Not to mention that his CDs are way to high and his W is on level with Akali's.... Shen is a sustain tank, this is not Shen!

Actually, his identity is as a dueling tank who can quickly shift to becoming a protective peel tank. Sustain was just part of the bundle.

That's like saying "Amumu's identity is as a burst mage" even though his passive reducing MR is just a minor part of his kit.
