@Reinboom: Why do APs need another MR item?

In the announcement for the Abyssal changes, Reinboom says that the Abyssal tweaks won't be released with patch 5.10. The reason?

Because mages need another MR item

Well, to be quite frank, I find this reasoning quite...lacking. For several reasons:

exists as a source for AP + MR, on top of everything else it gives.
To be able to itemize both your primary damage stat and the best defense stat for your most likely match-up is something you'd normally want to avoid, and the must-buy nature such an item can have is one of the reasons no viable AD + Armor item existed for some seasons (and nowadays, no AD + Armor item exists at all).

Because Athene's MR isn't that much.

Katarina usually rushes Abyssal against AP Champs. If they are to rework it fo more Bruiser Champs (Elise, Diana, etc) than that might mean she gets nerfed. Lets nerf Kat even more. Yes

I find it hilarious that they thought that Athenes would still be the primere AP v AP item because of the MR. Yet all we have seen is Morrelo's being picked up by freaking everyone, regardless of matchup. If they want better MR options for mages, start with their core item that you over nerfed.

Problem is that there is a lot of champions that do not use item 3174 at all. You don't build on stuff like Vlad, Diana, and Kat. Remove abys and they are pigeon holed on mr items.

Well, they're not removing Abyssal altogether if I understand it correctly - they are more retooling it to become a stacking shred item like the new Black Cleaver.

Which would still be interesting to the sustained magic damage dealers of the League - sustained damage dealers like Vladimir.

Between her resets and low CDs, as well as DL being multiple hits, Katarina could also stack a Black-Cleaver-esque Abyssal quite fast. And, actually, the same goes for Diana. Especially if the magic damage on autos mastery works with it.

Thinking about it, that combination might actually be quite strong on any AP auto-attacker.

I'd be pissed if they turned it into an AP Black Cleaver. It has the potential to lower someone's mr below 0, and is an aura thus effects thornmail/sunfire cape whereas magic penetration doesn't effect the damage from those items.

We need another mr Item for champs like etc.

While I do feel like the New Scepter will be good on Mordekaiser regardless, more MR items are needed. More AP granting CDR items that do not grant mana regen are also needed.

The current scepter is amazing on Mordekaiser, I do not see any way possible for the scepter to be of benefit to Mordekaiser.

FE: If they add health to the Scepter, it will not go well with Mordekaiser. Mordekaiser doesn't scale well at all with health compared to flat resistances due to the nature of his passive. If they change the passive of Scepter to where it is no longer an aura then that would be a nerf to Mordekaiser as well.

That's not exactly what they said. They said "look at giving them MR elsewhere"; that doesn't necessarily mean "giving them a new MR item". They might simply be adjusting another item to add more MR where it already has some, or give MR to something that has none at all (Say, drop some CDR off Morellonomicon and add some MR by dropping Codex and adding Mantle).

They said at the end that they don't have the MR problem figured out yet. There's no telling how they will approach it.
