Make his passive a fusion of the old passive and new. Annie style, 4th spell casts and pops 1.5 second spellshield. Keep his mana costs on the high side to make it a meaningful decision. You either have to pop it to get IN by using QWE or STAY in by using R as the 4th. Put a cool down on the effect if need be, after it pops a 20 second CD before it builds again.

You'd force support Malz to waste mana or be risky.

One of the things I disliked the most about his old passive was the fact that you were pretty much stuck on base casting your spells to charge it. I'm glad that mechanic has been removed.

EDIT: At least Annie players generally go for Q first, which requires a target. Getting a stun ready is not super important early on because they would use Q to farm. But old Malzahar pretty much had to spam Q on base so he could start farming with a voidling.
