Why the Tank Meta is Dying and Where the New Meta is Headed. (My speculation)

Heres the reason why

1.Sated Devour

Tanks are very weak vs sustained damage and thats what sated devour gives. Tanks are better vs burst but with sated being fotm and top junglers atm are sated devour junglers. it deals alot of mixxed damage which melts tanks quite quickly

  1. Armor nerfs in 5.16

Tanks are already easy to kill this season... item 3153 item 3035 and Vayne being a fotm pick... tanks will have a hard time so what does riot do. NERFS ARMOR LOL

  1. Powerful tank champions reserving steady nerfs

There are many powerful tanks had really strong kits that were loaded with crowd crontrol and damage. When the overpowered tanks got nerfed tanks were put in a spot where strength was based on the power on tank items alone being super strong. Now tank items in general are quite powerful cause they are cheap to build compared to offensive items and the way the tanks kit interact with the items is quite powerful. Longer you could stay alive in a fight the more dmg you could put out as a whole as they take alot longer to kill you and you have more time to deal damage thus dealing quite abit of damage with just your base stats and your full tank build.

but after the sej nerfs and tank nerfs and cinderhulk nerfs the tank meta starts to fall down hill

  1. new ap items Tanks tend to be strong vs burst champions cause thats how tanks work but tend to be weak vs sustained... most ap mid laners are burst but with the new item 3151 item 3116 and a higher ap item 3089 makes tanks more useless as you can take their health down fast as well as kite them with rylais. The huge advantage tanks had vs ap champions has shrunk be a considerable ammount so thats a pretty big strength tanks had that got thrown out the window. in favor of some really strong mid game mages that are great at kiting tanks with the amount of cc in their kits and the utility in the ap items such as item 3116 item 3157 . Utility mages are great vs tanks as they can kite and melt tanks. Tanks do have alot of counterplay to them. Mainly sustained damage and kiting so they are far from assassins who tend to have a unfair playstyle with difficult counterplay when they were dominating the meta.

so now we are experiencing a meta shift with the new sated devour and new ap items i believe the meta will shift to more of a mid game focus as i can see as pretty strong right now on the most recent patch.

mid game meta is powerspikes and burst which shines through as well as strong initations champions that fit that role should be able to have a strong showing i dont know for sure but that what it looks to be headed.

What do you guys think the meta is heading

for sure just more of the same as previous seasons except they will keep the champs with escapes super strong and keep the champs without them super weak aside from rengar

The tank meta dying will heavily shift to one of three meta's, two of which we've already seen.

The first is we revert back to the high mobility assassin meta from season 4, with sated in the game assassins may take on the role of destroying the opponents sated champ. For this meta to be viable the numbers on the tank nerfs have to be just enough to allow Master Yi and other melee hypercarries to plow through even the biggest of tanks, and thus requiring someone with increadibly high burst to reliably destroy them before they can get going in a teamfight.

The Second will be the burst caster's Meta from season 2, Assassins won't be able to thrive well in this meta as the burst from a graves + annie combo (just an example, any burst adc + mid laner works) will keep any assassin from finishing off a target successfully. For this meta to thrive the tank nerfs are gonna have to be pretty harsh once the numbers are crunched. This meta will largely be viable only if a sated jungler has enough power to push effectively in the adc's place.

The Last meta that could surface at this point is the Skirmisher's meta. This meta relies heavily on kiting poking and waveclear potential, and though this is the most unlikely meta to arise, this one relies on stronger tower pushing with the need for kits that don't necessarily need synergies so much as dueling potential. Rotations will be key in this meta as it relies on not seeing more than 3-4 players total in a teamfight, and focuses more on gaining objective control. This is a fairly low interaction meta and relies on tanks literally becoming so bad that high engage comps can't compete due to poke and AOE striking them down.

Of all these my eye is on the assassins, They were never really nerfed during their prime, but rather the new jungle items brought out their natural counter's. This meta was my least favorite as I love playing adc and support roles so naturally assissins throw big wrench's in that. Nami's buff actually looks like it could make assassin's a shoe in due to the now insane mobility she can grant her team, and her lockdown is just long enough for an akali/katarina/zed to swoop in and kill an adc or master yi without much recourse.

All things come to an end, but don't worry, there's a circle in this game, it'll be back
