Laning against Tryndamere feels like a chore

I dont care who im playing, if im laning against him it feels unfun. Hes SUPER mobile, he has a mega slow, can be unkillable for 5 seconds, does a crap ton of damage, sustain, etc. Its probably one of the most unfun lanes in league.

If you play a passive or late game scaling champ vs trynd in lane, it's going to be very rough for you and you're better off letting him push the wave closer to your turret for safer farming.

  1. Almost every good Tryndamere without exception will usually run high attack speed runes and start with their E (the dash) and try to cheese you if they can at level 1 or 2.

  2. Stay away from Trynd if his rage bar is full, cause he will do insane crit damage on each strike -- unless you have more sustain than him.

  3. If you want to beat him early, you need to play something that punishes him for his early all ins, has more sustain than his Q and lifesteal items, and/or just bursts him harder and make sure you have hard CC in your kit.

  4. Don't forget to buy item 3123 this item very early if you're AD (even if you're a tank).

Champs that can go toe-to-toe with Trynd (and even outscale him or at the very least stay even with him easily): Fiora Renekton Yasuo } Pantheon Swain Teemo Vladimir Udyr DrMundoMalphite

Nasus as a skill matchup; you have to play Nasus safely and properly and itemize the right way, or else a decent Trynd will shred a mediocre Nasus easily. (Hint: rush some of these tank items if you're building tanky/bruiser: item 3143 item 3075 item 3110 )

Most AP mages do very, very poorly against Trynd unless you're one of the two I mentioned above, or you have insane burst and mobility like Kat and LB (LB shits on Trynd at level 6 with chain spam, and Kat vs Trynd is a skill matchup that slightly favors Kat).

That is great advice! However, it is still only putting a Band-Aid on a bleeding wound. It isn't his playstyle or his cheese factor that makes him unbearable in lane or to deal with in general. It's his ultimate. The fact that he can taunt an ultimate out of you, or force a flash, or anything after what would normal him being dead. For example, I have faced a lot of Tryndameres that will easily bum rush a line in hopes of getting the CC put on him and then pop ultimate leave fight then re-appear no more than 10 seconds. So, now you have no CC, the enemy team ADC is now able to poke you down while you have a critical machine chasing you. Nah, brah. After awhile you have to ask yourself "What the flying dog is going on"? That is the problem. He can have his huge mobility, huge critical damage, his healing, but not that ultimate. It should be his passive and it should be as long as Zac's passive.

I mean, I don't know at what elo you play at -- but I've been in bronze / silver / gold since season 4. I've never had any problems versus 99% of all my Trynd matchups.

He's not nearly as oppressive as someone like say, Fiora or Panth -- two champs who essentially force you to either get an exact counter-pick matchup, or be doomed to sit under turret and hope you don't get all-in'd at level 6 (3 for panth).

Trynd doesn't come anywhere close to their level of oppressive laning behavior even past 6.

He's annoying with his ult, sure, but it's not a 100% failsafe and as long as you can kite him / cc him / burst him, he'll never be able to do a thing.

Andrey03453 votes

Because people don't know how to play trynda there. Trynda requires a lot of positioning skill and proper timing. He's more then oppressive. You just dive into tower as soon as you hit 6, kill enemy laner, get out with R and get free tower. Often after that enemy toplaner ragequit.

SnakDatSmilesBak1 votes

Since you seem experienced maybe you can help me out?

Aside from the crit cheese at level 2 his laning is ok. I find his splitting to be more frustrating though. How do you deal with that?

Chønklord1 votes

That's the thing; if you let Trynd free farm too much -- or worse, give him some early kills -- once he has his item powerspikes he'll normally just keep splitpushing for days. You'll have to do one of three things: send someone to counter him that can stop his split pushing; rotate two or more teammates to shut him down (if you have the mobility/cc as a group to do so); or force 5v4 teamfights against the enemy and make him have to regroup or else lose elsewhere on the map.

League is generally all about a give and take when it comes to objectives -- unless of course you're just roflstomping the enemy team so hard that you can afford to be everywhere on the map.

The trick is to focus your team on taking the most readily available objective(s) without losing much, or anything, in return. Continue to do this and you win the game. That's why it's extremely important to learn lane rotations, splitpushing, and the most important, wave management and wave control.

9 out of 10 times, a team that has superior lane control abilities and wave management will win out over a team that just goes for kills -- even that team is ahead in overall KDA or has a fed player (like a Trynd, for example).

It's much harder in solo q to do these things effectively particularly at lower elo -- but it's not impossible. Just understand the team comp / champ select choices of you and your teammates, and adjust your playstyle accordingly.

Ask yourself: What is my/our team's win conditions? ---

  • Are we a splitpushing team? Udyr, Singed, Trynd, Heimer, etc; then your win condition usually involves some sort of 1-3-1 or 1-4 split (with the solo laners having TP)
  • Are we an aggressive early game team comp team? Panth, Trynd, Eve, Annie, etc; then your win condition is to make sure you get all the laners ahead as early as possible to snowball quickly from there, then force teamfights afterward asap to push for the win
  • Are we a late game scaling team? Nasus, Veigar, etc; then your win condition is to survive until mid-late game without losing any turrets if possible -- jungler needs to be much more actively involved with all three lanes with this type of early game team comp to ensure all lanes don't simply just flat out get crushed. Late game you excel in 5v5 fights and can steamroll the other teams (usually). Hardest type of team comp to play in solo q.

Once you understand your team comp and your win conditions, it makes it much easier then to adjust how you play your lane, and the only thing left is understanding the various champion matchups for your lane. I highly recommend you jump on Tryndamere and play him a few dozen times or so in Normal draft mode, to better grasp his strengths/weaknesses. I recommend this for anyone having difficulties against a particular champ. It makes laning against them with your own preferred champions much, much easier.

SnakDatSmilesBak1 votes

Thanks for the help but now i wanna ask you a different question. You've given 3 possible ways to beat a tryndamere. 2/3 are reliant on teammates listening to calls. The other forces you to lane against him until your team either loses or ends 4v4. Of course you can have some combination of the 3 but I think that you're right because when I beat a tryndamere it's because one of those 3 things happened consistently. Do you think it's healthy to have a champ's counterplay be so reliant on teammates?

Chønklord2 votes

It's not so much about a "reliance on teammates to counterplay Trynd", so much as it is "reliance on your ability to counter splitpushers in general".

Trynd is just one of the many oppressive splitpusher type champions in the game.

If you're having problems as the laner who is always being splitpushed and losing the lane due to champions like Trynd, then you need more experience and knowledge on countering splitpushing; then you'll have an easier time not just vs Trynd but others that do what he does, as well.

Splitpushing is just like any other gameplay tactic; it's only oppressive if you as a laner or as a team fail to counter that strategy from an early phase of the game. It's nothing inherently wrong with Trynd individually. If anything, Trynd needs a rework because in the current (and recent) seasons, he's mostly been shutdown and is a mid-range tier champ pick at best, due to how the meta has evolved and the fact that Trynd normally really sucks at 5v5 fights when there is so much hard CC going around these days.

Honestly for myself, I haven't picked Trynd at all this season just because there are like a dozen other champions that can do what he does but better, more consistently, and actually have a stronger teamfight presence (and aren't as reliant on getting his first two items to be relevant).

Games usually are pretty short and snowbally this season, and if you're playing Trynd and fall behind even once in the early game and fail to get enough gold to buy your all-important first two items, it makes it almost impossible to splitpush effectively because the enemy team can by and large simply just ignore you and steamroll your teammates and the paper turrets. When you're behind as Trynd and your splitpushing is too weak and your teamfight is too weak, you're basically useless, unless your team can somehow stall the game long enough for you to get back in withsome more farming and items.

I recently played 3 times agaisnt Trynd and I won lane everytime so let me help you ;

Just poke him when he's trying AA minions so his rage bar doesn't fill up, don't try to fight him when his rage bar is full. Never push the wave agaisnt Trynd, instead deny him as much CS as you can, if you push you expose yourself too much. That's it pretty easy tbh ...

Kayle Out heal him, trade him, kite him, and ult him at every part of the game. You can also build more utility.

FioraWillCarry12 votes

No no no no.

I main Kayle. I don't recommend picking Kayle into Tryndamere at all.

Now lets be clear here. Kayle outscales Tryndamere by a large margin and is far better than him in the late game. But the reason that I don't recommend the pick is because if by some ungodly misfortune you end up facing a Tryndamere that knows how to play his champ well, you're gonna suffer very much in lane. Kayle vs Tryndamere after all the gimmicks and the back and forth trading, ALWAYS boils down to who's ult lasts longer. Kayle's ult is 3 seconds at max rank while Tryndamere is 5 seconds at ALL RANKS. If this Tryndamere gets even the slightest lead and he knows what he is doing, he is going to dive you repeatedly after he finishes item 3087 and there won't be a damn thing you will be able to do about it.

Now, I have won vs Tryndamere a lot more than I've lost to him but I recently played vs a couple Tryndamere one tricks that really showed me how lopsided the match up can be. I realized that all the times I won vs Tryndamere in the past were because the players were just bad. A good Tryndamere will beat Kayle every time.

I recommend Irelia, or Renkton over Kayle when playing against Tryndamere, champions that can match his early game dominance.

I've played the Kayle vs Tryndamere matchup and Kayle definitely does not have an advantage. Even if you slow him with your 'q' he can just dash wherever he wants (if things get really bad for him he'll just ult and/or heal and crit you to death). So you end up wasting mana and accomplish basically nothing. And the ms boost granted by Kayle's 'w' is TERRIBLE. Don't even bother using this ability in lane unless you just wanna waste mana. And of course, as we all know, it's impossible to run from a Tryndamere. Once your tower is down, she's basically a free kill whenever Tryn wants.

Maybe before Kayle got nerfed like a million times over the last few years she had a chance of beating him with her decent ap ratios and before the cooldown on her ult got nerfed. But after her nerfs Kayle is garbage and only Kayle mains are having success with her (which honestly isn't much at all).

Holy Fervor1 votes

Not true at all. She has early lane initiative, and in this matchup you rush double dorans and Berserkers. Overall if you kite him, you should get more auto attacks on him and be able to prevent him from stacking his fury. Mana isn't an issue because you have meditation / doran's rings. It's problably not the easiest matchup for a beginning kayle player, but after 100 or 200k mastery points and seeing the matchup several times you should win it 8/10 against evenly skilled trynd players.

Kayle believe it or not was actually stronger than that in preseason 6, and has actually been a problem champion for a while. They interact with her balance through items and masteries because she really abuses them as a carry. Kayle with nashors and rageblade stacked has 135 base damage + 67.5% AP ratio on her E. Include runaan's interaction, and side targets get hit by 150 base damage + 75% AP per auto attack. She is not gutted by any means.

Just assuming that Kayle vs Tryndamere happens, She's able to easily proc storm raiders against him and even if he gap closes he will not be able to compete with Storm Raiders + Q/W + Rylais/Mallet (If she buys these items). He cannot prevent her from CSing, and she has an early game lead on him. Not only does she melt him 1v1, but when she gets her core, the games over because she can melt his team. She is in no means weak, and continues to be a consistently A+ tier champion.

A smart Tryndamere will just get a qss and/or merc treads. And after he qss out of it he'll just ghost after you and crit you to death (along with his ult if he didn't use it, but that's irrelevant). Whatever kind of cc you do to him he'll just qss/dash/ult out of it and go back to split pushing. And if you take Stormraiders you're not going to "melt his team" because you lose out on the bonus damage from fervor. And yes they definitely gutted her. She's been nerfed like 5 times over the last few years. When was the last time you saw any meaningful nerfs to Tryndamere? I haven't seen him nerfed in ages for who knows why...

Holy Fervor1 votes

"If you take Storm raiders you're not going to melt his team because you don't have fervor" LOL. Maybe in silver, where y'all just stand still and AA. The moment you have Nashor's, and 3 points into Q you can reliably proc storm raiders. The movement speed is much more valuable than 60 AD.

If you're taking Fervor, it's because you're wanting a late game build. Her strongest DPS build with fervor is actually Nashor's -> Rageblade -> Runaan's -> IE -> Pen item/Botrk or if you're really fed and they don't have as much armor Nashor's -> Rageblade -> Runaan's -> IE -> shiv -> Sell Nashor's for ER.

Outside of that, i don't see Fervor making a difference. Storm raiders gives you MS and slow resistance, between that and flash you can run down the backline or anyone that's overextended. Kayle's problem at this point is MS and Utility, not damage. With an AP / Attack Speed build you still do ~1200 DPS.

Now, in regards to nerfs to Kayle, yeah she's been nerfed: Stinger got its cut cost, Fervor is barely a keystone without itemizing crit, rageblade got a cost increase and isn't AOE anymore, TLD no longer procs twice on her E due to a bug associated with a change, runaan's lost 15 on-hit dmg, soon doran's ring won't be able to be stacked, meditation got nerfed.

Kayle however is in no way "gutted." She was ungodly strong sometime in season 6, and now she's just strong lmfao. Problably a low A tier champion. The way her kit works and itemizes is inherently hard to nerf or buff without breaking her. She's balanced along the lines of ADC and High AP items. With the stinger nerf, people started running boots stinger to compensate for the nerfs, and people found that it's an extremely effective combination. 70% attack speed, 10% CDR. 45 MS. Kayle's a champion like that, you adapt your itemization depending on what's strong in the current patch. There is many workarounds to the several nerfs, and they actually gave her more build diversity.

Infact, look at 호희, Dawidsonek, Kayle 1v9, kerber0s, Im jungle /lm jungle (inactive, he comes and goes). There are plenty of high elo Kayle one tricks who are still about where they were before the nerfs, suggesting that the Nerfs weren't effective. Between my main being D5, with a 61% win rate on her, and over 8000 games on her since season 3. I think i'm painfully aware of what she can do, on pretty much any patch since maybe 3.8 or something like that.

In terms of Tryndamere, he has a really awkward two item spike. He cannot fight Kayle during the two item phase, Whether the spike is Shyv + IE, Shyv + PD, Shyv + tiamat, etc. etc. At the boots + Shyv/PD he can fight her. but the moment she has Nashor's, that kind of ends. Ofc after that PD Mallet IE itemization exists for Kayle and Trynda can really enjoy that. Ghost isn't an issue, if you overextend against anyone with ghost that you cannot directly fight you deserve to die anyway lmfao.

In terms of Tryndamere nerfs, he has been. He was a Ghostblade + Botrk champion, and the removal of the attack speed on ghostblade got rid of the early game tryndamere build that was actually oppressive. They used to build Ghostblade -> Botrk -> Zeal item -> IE in high elo and between ghost / ghostblade / Botrk / W there wasn't really much to fight that build. They also nerfed his AP ratios when they were exploitive. He still sometimes itemizes Rageblade / Gunblade despite that nerf though. But in terms of Tryndamere, spikes, and scaling, he's not in nearly as good of a spot right now after all those changes.

Decrit2 votes

I used to play Trynda top, moved to jungle, my 2 cents

  1. He's not that much mobile if not later in the game. In lane this can be perceived as high mobility because it's being done in conjunction with a favorable trade ( as already stated, killing the 7th minion on the second wave with a dash gives you enough xp to level up Q, which gives passive damage and can be used to heal), but once that he is not that agile. If you manage to kite or peel him off he has not many means to reach on you, and he is terribly weak to slows.

  2. His slow is not that strong at all, just consistent. Remember that you are weaker when shouted because you lose AD, which might make feel dueling him early impossible because you are busy running and fighting back seems useless. You have to force him to shout early and then kite or just slow/peel it off.

  3. Forcing him to heal decreases substantially his threat. Poking him will probably force him to engage to try to get profit off his rage.

  4. Being unkillable is not that useful if you are cced

... in short, just get exaust

DJMason886 votes

... and lose all your towers? If you don't have TP trynd is most likely going to get first tower unless he is camped.

Decrit3 votes

Trynda is not that good to get towers early, so the problem is not there.

Also, there is a high chance you are gonna need to use that TP elsewere unless you commit to the lane. In that case, might as well take exaust

Aside from the crit cheese at level 2 his laning is ok. I find his splitting to be more frustrating though. How do you deal with that?

His laning isn't the most frustrating but it is too dependent on cheese. His splitting is frustrating because of how easily he can dive under towers or escape with ghost/flash/spin.

Decrit2 votes

I... don't know how to deal with his splitpush.

In the sense, even I sometimes i fail to realize how to do it well, and that is true both for jungle and top since the pattern is the same. Most times i could not manage to splitpush well because my teammates were getting beaten hard because they got engaged by the enemy, so i had to back. Other times the enemy team collapses on me so i don't even manage to duel.

Probably having an hard engage compo could be proven useful, you put a timer on how much a tryndamere can splitpush and punish his absence. on this regard, Malphite proves again to be a good counter to him.

"Super Mobile" where exactly? Honestly, just keep him off winions so he can't farm up his fury and that's how you beat him easily. If you can't control the wave(which should be natural as a top laner) you are in for a bad time since he's freely getting full fury uncontested.

Yes his kit is outdated and needs a relaunch, but the weaknesses are there.

SnakDatSmilesBak6 votes

Late game with cdr his e goes down to about a 4 second cd. Essence reaver makes it easy to cap cdr on him. That's his mobility.

Andrey03451 votes

Well, you can cap cdr without essence reaver with good buld as well.

Andrey03451 votes

You do it without runes. Same items + CDR boots.

SnakDatSmilesBak1 votes

I always saw it done without cdr boots but I guess both cap cdr.

Andrey03451 votes

cdr boots are actually very good on Trynd. Especially when you buy them early.

SnakDatSmilesBak1 votes

Yeah that makes sense. Sometimes I even see people rank up their other abilities instead of their ult on trynd with the build you are talking about.

Andrey03451 votes

Well, I don't like that idea because ranking ult up reduces cd by like 20 seconds which is way better then ranking up E or Q.
