How much damage should a tank put out?

One common theme with the tank update is that tanks are putting out too much damage, too reliably. So damage is on its way out and CC should be on its way in.

So what I want to know is what is a good standard for tank damage and how much more CC are people willing to put up with?

I'd say make them all like sion. No free ambient damage but if they actually try to land all of their shit, they can do the same damage, if not more, than they do now.

Part of me says I could live with this.

The problem with tank damage now is ambient damage. They do damage just by existing so riot wants to change it so they have to actually do something to deal damage. Examples are Rammus defense curl, Amumu pool, and Sejuani flail.

So everything is going to be a skill shot from now on?

Not necessarily a skill shot but a conditional ability that has to be activated for a 1 time damage. Think more like sejuani's e and less like her w. E is really easy to hit, but is a one click and done ability where as her w just continually does damage to everything around her. I don't really mind ambient damage myself but can understand why people would have a problem with it.

Tanks need enough damage to trade during the laning phase and/or clear the jungle reasonably well (with the exception of supports).

I'll settle for that.

Tanks also have to be strong enough to actually feel like a threat to the ADC or other carries. Otherwise tanks would feel like a tanky Janna doing almost no damage and being easily ignored. Also if they reduced the tanks damage to much then for the top lane tanks, they'll never stand a chance against any Fighters or Assassins they might end up being laned against.

I just hope they don't over nerf their damage or the tank items. I feel a decent damage standard to look at would be Shen's damage. He can do decent damage but nothing really over the top, and he has enough damage and CC to be relevant in team fights.

they can have all the CC in the world as long as not one of them keeps a point and click tbh

I mean, point and click CC in a gap closer has a significant drawback. Take a look at the current Maokai as an example. If he's overextended in lane, right now, his W doesn't get him out of that sticky situation. He has to run away with his movement speed, unless the wave is further up in the lane than he is. If his W were changed to a skillshot, he now can use it as an escape.

They need high enough damage or low enough cooldowns that you can't just walk past them and not care.
