The problem with Veigar and how to fix it.

I just had a eureka moment. I realised what the issue with Veigar is, why the changes to Event Horizon killed him so badly, and why we're going about fixing him all wrong.

The problem with Veigar isn't that he can't land his stun. It's that he still needs to land his stun. Pretty much the entire Veigar experience is tied to 1) farm as much AP as possible, then 2) stun someone and blow them to hell. And the reason for this is simple: the broken skill isn't Event Horizon.

It's Dark Matter.

A lot of people don't like Baleful Strike being changed from a targeted skill to a skillshot, but be honest, we can live with that. R is still a targeted skill. The real problem is that a MASSIVE fraction of Veigar's burst (120-320+100% AP damage) comes from his W and his W is literally IMPOSSIBLE to hit a champion with unless they're CC'd. Consider that, for all the complaining people have done about his E having a .75 second delay on it, his W has a 1.25 second delay on it (and always has) but no-one mentions that, when really what Event Horizon is used for is just to set up Dark Matter.

What I would suggest is completely replacing Dark Matter. That would unshackle Veigar's kit from its current dependance on landing an Event Horizon to be able to burst someone (and him being able to burst someone from being his only reason for existence) and allow Event Horizon to be used as Riot is apparently intending it to be- as a zoning tool or a AoE trap to hold players within a restricted area. To be competely honest, I don't have any immediate suggestions for what kind of skill can replace Dark Matter off the top of my head, but as long as it's something more reliable, allowing Veigar to conceivably get off a 3-skill burst combo WITHOUT stunning his target first, then it should be OK. After all, it's not like this would be the first time that Riot had completely replaced one of a champion's skills without giving them a complete kit remake. Did you know that back when I first started playing LoL Taric's ult was a toggleable aura that continuously healed him until he ran out of mana (and even BEFORE that it continuously healed his ALLIES as well) but only buffed his allies' AD, while his passive caused his autoattacks to restore 7.5% of the damage he dealt to him as mana? If Riot are truly serious about fixing Veigar (who, let me remind you, is an EXTREMELY old champion) they can at least do this much.

Thoughts?

I agree with you, but I think you need to look around the forums a bit more. A lot of people have been talking about how W needs to be more reliable, because it currently is his a wave clear tool. As for his E, it actually does still have a problem. A lot of enemies can out trade him , even from inside his event horizon. They need to make a reason for Veigar to want people trapped inside the cage rather than stunned. For instance, Enemies inside Event Horizon deal 20% less damage to veigar, and will take 10% extra damage from Veigar. This effect ends when Event horizon ends or when the enemy touches a wall. This way, there would be some nice interaction going on. Veigar wont take as much damage if they are inside the cage and can deal more, but they can still fight back. Or they can run into the wall, eliminate the buff/debuff in exchange for being stunned.
