Unpopular opinion: Akali isn't that annoying to play against.

The Trent··14 votes·3,257 views

I keep seeing Akali hate threads but I feel like a huge point is being missed here. Personally, I don't find Akali that hard to play against. Counter picking her is pretty easy as all you need is a champion that can aoe or lock her down in her smoke. Gragas, Poppy, etc are all amazing picks against her. She's banned often which means the people that want to main her don't have enough expierence to completely stomp and the people that play against her don't have enough expierence to counter her. The first time I played against Zoe, I hated it. Then I realized just how freelo she is if you pick a decent counter pick and just side step her sleep pre 6. I think if less people banned Akali and took the time to learn her weaknesses instead of focusing on her strengths, a lot of people wouldn't be so blinded. I know people who haven't even played against Akali, but they're still banning it. I almost feel as if Akali is only being banned so much as a weird hate bandwagon that doesn't really make sense. I ban Blitzcrank in just about every game I play because that's a champion I personally don't like playing against. Is blitzcrank good? Not really. Do I flame riot 24/7 because Blitzcrank is op and his hook is too "unfair" to play against? No, I'm aware of how to counter blitz and if I ever decide to ban my second most hated champion, Lee Sin, I'm aware of how to completely stomp such a useless support. Half of you I feel like don't even have that much of a right to complain, because Akali is pretty much garbage unless you're in really high tier gameplay. Do you honestly think that the bronze akali you faced once was honestly good at akali in any way shape or form and you weren't just unaware of how to play against her?

TL;DR Akali isn't that annoying to play against, people just don't take the time to learn how to play against her. People need to stop coming for riot's weave over their own ignorance. Y'all are pretty much not in the elo where people are abusing Akali, yet you're still complaining about her and it doesn't make much sense. If you're going to complain about a champion complain about Darius or Garen because they're probably 2000x better of a pick down there than Akali will ever be.

Yikes try playing Overwatch then. Literally the lead game dev even said if you don't counterpick in games like League and Overwatch, you shouldn't expect for every game to be fair. There are still items and other methods to counterplay an akali without having to actually counter pick with a champion. If you're refusing to counter pick, you're literally missing out on one of the best ways to stratagize in this game. Counterpick can = counterplay considering you're countering how they play with your pick. It's like picking Kass into any magic dealer. It gives you counterplay to their magic damage. And the counterplay to his magic shield is to poke with an auto attack and then poke with you magic after you've baited out the shield. Just like how you could bait out Akali's smoke by acting as if you were going to go in, but then using some sort of mobility to get out. Not every champion has mobility though which makes this harder which means you're going to have to use tactics like lane shoving as an immobile mage to ensure that akali will have a hard time csing and you won't get screwed over by her smoke. Like I just listed multiple ways to counterplay against her as pretty much any champion consdering mobility creep is a thing and pretty much everyone with mobility creep has good wave clear. Meanwhile all I got from you was a really short statement with nothing backing it up. Makes sense you're one of the people on the hate AKali side.

This isn't overwatch, this is League.

This is like saying "I'm going to counter pick you from another game".

Considering I mentioned that the game dev included League, I would like you to rethink your statement. It's nothing like saying I'm going to counter pick you from another game. It's like saying counter picks are strong and a valid option for counterplay in all games. It's done in the lcs, it's done in overwatch. Did this obvious counter argument of counterpicking literally being used in the LCS fly over your head or something because you didn't offer much to back up your claim other than an easy to counter quote.

DrCyanide5 votes

It's just such a strange statement to make. In Overwatch counter picking makes total sense because you can change your pick mid game. In League there's a 50/50 chance you won't have the opportunity to counter pick because you'll pick first. Pro play has a 6th member of their team organizing their picks and bans, as well as an entirely different ban system. Saying "counter picks work for the pros" is basically like saying it works in a completely different game.

LeftyRaydy1 votes

why dont you rethink your statement. how can you counterpick if you go first for example? a champion should have clear Counterplay its plain and simple.

You're basically saying if I accidentally got myself counterpicked against an Akali in Drafting, I deserved to get fucked no matter what. Even if I pick someone who isn't a strong pick against Akali, I deserve to know if she has any small weak spots I can abuse into. Just like how Darius can counter a champion like Shen for example, but by knowing that Darius is at his weakest point when his Conqueror isn't active or if he misses his Q, I can go all in on him for some short trades rather than staying behind under tower like a bitch.

Akali on the other hand offers very little window to counterplay mainly because of her W, which makes almost half the roster useless against her & is the main reason why Akali is nowhere considered a "healthy" champion. She tower dives super easy, she can seriously burst people a lot easier than most Assassins do with someone little effort, and all on top of that, most of her damage has no "do this to get bonus damage" condition such as her Q. Aatrox requires to hit his sweet spots to do meaningful damage, LeBlanc has to chain her Q in-between her abilities to do tons of burst damage, and Akali is just someone that you can spam Qs no matter what.

And lastly:

Y'all are pretty much not in the elo where people are abusing Akali, yet you're still complaining about her and it doesn't make much sense.

I'm highly certain that the "abusing" part fits excellently well of why people are complaining about her. If she is that "weak" as you think she is, no one will even bother playing her at all. I mean everyone already got used to Aatrox's dominance after his rework, when will Akali 's turn comes?

I didn't say that at all first of all. Akali is a high skill cap champion like Riven. They have their counters EX: Garen, but a good Riven that deserves to win has plenty of ways to still win. By abusing Akali I literally just meant using her high skill cap to your advantage like for example Riven. People in challenger are also abusing Riven, I don't know if that isn't obvious to you considering she only gets buffs besides being the only champion that can consistently have her mains staying in challenger. Akali's W really isn't that hard to play against like literally it has a 20 second cooldown. Just go in during that time frame it really ain't that hard. If she stays back, that's your call to shove because she sucks at csing while under pressure. Calling any high skill cap champion weak is just saying you're not in diamond or challenger. Whch a ton of the people complaining about her aren't in. Akali can't spam Qs no matter what. she can literally spam 2 and then it goes up to like 5-6 later on in the game if you're doing your combos perfectly. Unless you don't think similar abilities like Kled's W, where if you go anywhere near him while it's up, you will lose the trade, are unabled to be counterplayed (literally the counterplay is just wait for it to be down), I don't understand where you're coming from. It's not even that good in teamfights. Just move the teamfight away from the shroud or use aoe abilities in it.

Yeah, that's the problem for most people. I just think more people need to find creative ways to counter her shrowd. I've seen a few recently like building hextech protobelt or the ice one and using that before you throw out an ability. It's like her shrowd creates a situation where you have to think harder than you usually have to in most match ups and it's really getting to people. If you don't like how it cancles your auto attacks just bind auto attack move to something and then spam it and you won't have that problem anymore. I think if more people took glacial augment builds her shroud would be pretty useless.

Agreed. Whenever I play her I spam S (S is keybinded to stop which stops every movement action you're character is doing) and her weapons spin non stop. Idk why they made her do that every time she pauses. I think it's cool how she moves when she turns around though.

The thigh guy3 votes

You see. Her problem is that some champions can litteraly do nothing to her because of her shroud.

Cassiopia can do nothing of any real substance to her.

Malzahar can do nothing to her

The champions design makes it so that some picks are absolutely worthless into her, and it makes some games against her basically a 4v5.

And if she gets a head in even the smallest amount she has no counterplay due to divin you under turret with no risk.

Actually to counter your points of Cass and Malz being able to do nothing against her, the two hardest match ups I've had playing as akali were against a malzahar and Cass. Cass took the hextech freezing item which would always reveal my position in shroud and then she would just spam q and follow me in it without actually having to see me. If I tried to go in for a trade, using AKali's q/e/ r changes her model to be facing whatever she's throwing them at, giving Cass a free stun on her ultimate. Malzahar just used very smart usage of his ultimate and silence and would usually win fights if I dragged them out for too long. Not to mention I was a free kill if Malzahar asked for a gank. So I can't agree with you as Malzahar and Cass have been my hardest match ups as Akali and in both of the games mention I actually got first blood by roaming, so I was ahead. The people I were playing against were very skillful at their champion and tbh very focused on the game. Always reacted asap and they were the ones making the plays. Malzahar wouldn't wait for me to go in on him, he would just flash R and there's his jungler with the chain cc. Cass knew she had a huge advantage with the way her ultimate works and if I didn't stay on the outer ring of my circle, the smoke would fade outwards revealing me and allowing for her to use her e. So idk I think both the match ups you listed are skill match ups. No one counters anyone. Also just saying but Malz has his shield for the micro stun too.

Wait, you're using Malzahar as an example of champions that can't play against Akali? Like, probably literally her hardest counter?

And cass can drop miasma to prevent her from using her E or R, and since akali has to be facing you for every skillshot, it's pretty easy to land an ult on her. There are champions that really do have a hard time playing into akali, but your two examples weren't them.

Cass and Malz have hard cc lockdowns that will instantly dick Akali. Maybe the lane is hard for them up until 6, but after they get their ults, it's no contest. Akali can't do anything.

Except in her shroud akali can’t be targeted by malz ult. And the slow from the shroud will pop his passive.

She has to leave her shroud to do anything to him though. So the 1ish second she spends unshrouded, he can ult her, and that'd be her life.

Champions are hard countered by other champions. I wonder what that is like?

Aatrox dumpsters Akali

Darius dumpsters Garen

Morgana dumpsters Thresh

The list goes on, but my point remains. Certain champions invalidate other champions. Counterpicking is a legitimate strategy.

What's my motivation? I'm sick of seeing all the hate towards Akali and I don't think that riot should have to take action because of a bandwagon that doesn't make much sense. If they nerf/change her, it should be a thoughtful nerf/change that makes sense, not a nerf because the fanbase wants one rushed. I've been spamming league a LOT recently so bringing up my past 40 matches is literally nothing. That's like bringing up today and yesterday. I play against Akali 3 times in the last 2 days, that's a decent amount considering the time period. If it was 40 games over a month, your point would be valid. You didn't even try to mention the fact I got mastery 5 with her, so playing as her, for like 20 games in a row, where I was playing against some pretty smart people that countered me pretty well. You're also assuming I don't play on other accounts which is pretty common in League. I just told you why I care and why what you've said makes pretty much no sense. I'd love to play against her more, with how much practice the meta sheeps that play her have gotten with her, it's a free win.

I wouldn't suggest trying to ask questions like this considering they could just be turned back on you. What was your point in posting this on my thread? What is your motivation? Judging by the minimal research I did, aka looking at your profile icon I can see you're into KDA. AKali is part of KDA, is this why you have such a strong opinion about the people who comment on her. So why do you really care?

Ok but out of all my responses, because I wasn't gonna respond to any of them, I had to respond to your lmao. Yasuo's windwall, as someone who likes to play adc, is extremely easy to get around. Every time I see a Yasuo bottom, we completely stomp him. So it's really not on that level because Yasuo bottom is horrible.

I dont have a problem playing against akali and I think her nerfs arent warranted. Her winrate is garbage right now. I dont know why all the people are banning her and complaining about her. I usually stomp her in lane without too much trouble. Just dont stand in her cloud and stay behind your minions and you are basically safe. I feel like the people complaining about her are Noobs who are bad at this game. They are the same people who whine about zed but never bought a stop watch or a zonyas, and insta lock yasuo. They are the same people who think a high banrate = a low winrate because they dont understand how percentages work. Akali is fine. In fact Im not sure Ive EVER lost a game or lane to an Akali since I started playing this again. People think because a ban rate is high there is something wrong with a champion which is utter non-sense. Ban rates mean nothing. I perma ban yasuo just because he is annoying! But having an annoying kit doesn't mean the champion is effective at winning games which is what this is really about. Akali has an annoying kit which means she gets banned a lot just like zed, pike, yasuo, illaoi, ect. That doesn't mean she can win games or needs a nerf!

If you have to warp your team comp just to play against 1 champion that might get picked (and you have no guarantee) just to interact with them, the champ isn't well designed or fun to play around.

There's a difference between champions having strengths that you need to account for, and just being annoying. A manaless assassin with 4 dashes, sustain and True Stealth™ falls in the latter category. You either have ranged freeaim AoE you can mindlessly throw at her shroud, or you don't trade with her for the first 20 minutes of the game.

An adc doesn't have a lot of counterplay to pretty much any assassin... That's kinda where your support comes in. Sadly most meta supports are kill supports rn so you probably don't know the luxury of your Sona/ Janna support smashing Akali's face in every time she goes near you. Rakan works extremely well too. Alistar is like the only meta support that can completely destroy her rn, but Idk, his cds are too long to really justify it.

JackMcSnipeyz1 votes

No other assassin has that much zoning on basic ability, that much safety under turrets and that much sustain+AoE. As soon as she gets 6, i have to stay 1 screen away from her, and no support is gonna peel an akali, even if they could with some miracle, akali will just leave with E, R, R again and if she needs extra time, sit in shroud for 10 seconds to refresh her CD. Even if my supp is amazing and catches her with CC, she auto stealths and "tanks" the cc in the shroud, the only counterplay to her is to run or die even if you have a supp with you.

Kha zix, lb, rengar all have something i can KINDA play around, akali jumps into my team and shrouds, and i have to back off the teamfight for 10 seconds or blow up with gunblade + Q + AA.

She's staying banned.

Literally a fed Zed is 10x more annoying for a support than an akali. Am a support main can confirm literally all I have to do to peel akali is interupt her dashes and then buy a locket. Like it really ain't hard. You're trying to make akali sound op, not annoying to play against. If she was op her winrate wouldn't be trash. Literally if she wastes 10 seconds in her shroud that should be enough time for u to do something else important.

JackMcSnipeyz1 votes

A fed zed is a fed zed, i can still move back from his shadow and dodge his Q, then again he is fed, it's expected i get blown up by him. Akali even not fed with just gunblade will make me waste so much time that even if she's a feeder it's not worth it.

Literally if she wastes 10 seconds in her shroud that should be enough time for u to do something else important.

You're talking like Akali is wasting her shrouds to farm minions, she doesnt, she uses it in teamfights, and i hate to break it to you, in 10 seconds i aint gonna do something important on the other side of the map, her sitting in shroud for 10 seconds isnt wasting time, it's buying her team space while she AoE slows and bursts my team and me zooming in and out of untargetability, yea sure, leona can theoraticly hit a ult on her in shroud, but that only means leona wasted her ult on a guessing game on 1 target.

Akali is annoying, Akali is rock that also has a counter to paper but scissors still cant counter, as long as her shroud stays as it is with such a long duration, such short visibility time and hides her from turrets, she's gonna keep getting banned because she's annoying + powerfull - which is the most toxic combo in the game.
