League would improve drastically if...

People just played champions based primarily upon how much they like them and how good **they **are with them. If this community could somehow manage that, I honestly think it would improve tenfold. We'd see a greater diversity of champions, showing people that every champion can perform well in the right hands and the right situation. Even the worst champions can make themselves somewhat useful if you know them well enough and are good enough with them. We'd also see people start to realize, at least in lower ELOs, that it's less about "counters" and what's OP/UP and more about actual counter_play_. For example, I'd likely have fewer people questioning me for picking Garen into Teemo because this shift would cause those sorts of matchups to happen more frequently, and thus people would have more chances to witness how important experience and respective skill level is in deciding them. Moreover, the ones foolish enough to still pick what's "OP"/a "counter" without taking into account whether that champion actually is "OP" or a "counter" in their hands would see how foolish it is to base their decisions on such things.

How could such a climate be brought about, though? One idea that I've seen floated around, that I cosign, is disallowing players to use champions in ranked that they lack in-game experience with by tying things to the mastery system, requiring at minimum a level 2 mastery to take a champion to ranked. Complaints lodged against this idea include that it would turn off newer players as it further delays their entry into ranked. To that, I say two things. One, while that is true, it would also decrease the likelihood of fools (such as myself) entering ranked woefully unprepared, knowing only one champion/role and not having adequate runes, since they'd have more time to learn as well as earn IP for runes (or more champions). Two, League has the largest community of any online game and so expanding its userbase isn't exactly #1 on the priority list. Also, the new player experience is known for being bad, and I actually think this would help the players it doesn't dissuade, as it would make the "new to ranked" player experience less rough thanks to the bar they have to clear for entry being higher.

Another idea, which is in the works, and could be used in tandem with the above idea, is ranked team builder. What we've been told to expect somewhere down the line is a new version of team builder that allows you to choose your role but not your champion, with the champion select phase remaining similar to how it currently is. Were this to finally become a reality, and be combined with that first idea I mentioned, there would be almost no squabbling/confusion over who gets what role and it would be guaranteed that they have some experience with whichever champion they choose to fill that role, making it so fewer people would accuse you of being a troll if you picked, say, an unconventional support. If Riot could somehow work together with these guys (http://lol.arenaonline.com/), they could even go one step further and prevent you from choosing a champion you don't have experience with in the role you chose, as that site is surprisingly accurate when it comes to figuring out which role you performed in a given match. The only oddity I've seen is it listing my friend as having an Akali "support" match, when in reality he'd never do such a thing (not in ranked) and probably just ganked bot so much the site mistook him for a support. This would help prevent people from queuing up as a support just to find a group faster, only to go somewhere else once it comes time to pick champions.

One more idea that I think would help is if Riot could at least make our average grades with champions visible to both us and our opponents, possibly showing up alongside our choice in champion select (along with the number of matches, since the fewer you have, the more likely a couple bad matches are to skew the results). On top of this, they could expand upon the mastery system, also potentially with the help of the people who run that site I mentioned, and have it so you're able to get multiple separate masteries for a given champion. Rather than getting a title (that you never see) based upon the champion's main role, there could be titles for each of the 5 roles. So you might be a Level 5 Ekko top, but only a Level 3 Ekko mid. And, if they wanted to, they could combine all these separate masteries under one header for each champion, showing people your overall mastery with them as well. This would further prevent people doubting your abilities with a given champion. Riot seems wary of showing your grades to others, as they said they would only add the grades in match history for your eyes only, but I think it can be agreed that implementing the grades in this fashion would do more good than harm.

In short, there are steps Riot can take to increase diversity, and I think those steps would decrease toxicity at the same time. It wouldn't be an overnight thing, no matter how they chose to accomplish it, but I still think it can be done and that it's worth trying. The ideas I've presented are just the ones that come to mind for me. I'd love to hear more suggestions along these lines from others, as well as general feedback.

I'll try not to make this too long.

Yes, League would be a lot more fun and have a lot more diversity if people played the champions that they like best rather than whatever they think is currently the strongest. There's two things here: one is that people have a mentality of copying what the pros are doing (or flaming people who don't), but the second is also that League's balance isn't that great - there are usually a few outliers in each role that aren't properly balanced and really are significantly more powerful than alternatives (even with a less-skilled player.) Balance can never be perfect, but in the imaginary world where it could be, then these outliers wouldn't exist and people who play what they like instead.

Forcing people to have reached mastery level 2 to play a champion in ranked has several flaws:

  • Only games since the introduction of Mastery are tracked, meaning that a player with 1,000 games on a champion in season 4 wouldn't be allowed to play that champion if they haven't played them much since Mastery was introduced.
  • It would greatly reduce players' champion pools. You know there's people who would queue up for jungler while only having three junglers mastered, only to be stumped when two are banned and the enemy picks the third.
  • Most champions in Leauge are not that complex. You can understand how to play most of them reasonably enough after a game or two. Especially the more games you've played, the more other champions you know how to play, and the more you've encountered the champion in question, the easier you'll be able to pick up that champion.

Showing grades in champion select would only result in people getting flamed "Don't pick Quinn, you only have level 2 mastery with her! Troll playing a level-2 mastery champ! Report!!"

  • Riot appears to keep records of all your matches, or at least all your ranked matches, as you're able to check your ranked stats (overall, and champion by champion) for any season. Therefore, it should be no trouble at all for them to make it so this system also looks through those matches to determine if you played particular champions prior to the champion mastery system going live. So long as this possible, and I can see no reason why it wouldn't be, that would solve everyone's #1 issue with this proposal.
  • First of all, you say "you can understand how to play most of them reasonably enough after a game or two." That is how long it takes to reach level 2 mastery with a given champion. 3 max. Unless you don't win any. Second of all, you have _far _ too much faith in people's ability to learn champions on the fly first time out. Your average bronze player is lucky if they can play the simplest champions at a decent level after numerous matches. Whenever I know it's someone's first time with a champion, whether by being told or finding this out for myself with the help of OP.GG, they embarrass themselves. I cannot think of a single time I saw a different outcome. People like my friend, who owns every champion and has been playing this game for years, can pick up new champions with ease due to his wealth of experience. Your average bronze player, on the other hand? Good luck.
  • 1.) There's a reason I mentioned showing average grades first and then added everything else as more of an afterthought. If you went to pick a champion that you average a C or lower with, your teammates would have a good reason to question you. 2.) If you get matched up with the sort of person who would flame someone for picking a champion they're only level 2 with, chances are they're the sort of person who'll just find a different reason to flame you otherwise.

  • Then it would be tied to games played (or wins), not mastery.
  • This system would discriminate against players who have played for years, then.
  • If you play two ranked games with a champion but through bad luck you get afks in both, your stats end up awful and you can't play the champion any more because your average is low.

  • For the initial roll-out, yes, since the champion mastery system is too new for it to be based entirely upon that. But then, from that point on, it would all be tied to champion mastery.
  • How would it discriminate against players who have played for years? Honestly, how? Why say that and then not expand upon why?
  • It takes 2-3 matches to reach level 2 mastery with a champion. So, applying point point values (1 for S+, 14 for D-) to each possible grade to do some rough math, this is what it would take to lower your grade to even a C+.

B: A C- average for 2 matches. B+: A D average for 2 matches. A-: A D- average for 2 matches.

Meaning, unless you've literally just played the bare minimum, or your grade was already relatively low, it'll take historically bad matches to lower your grade to a point where I can see people starting to question/flame you. And your average could be brought back up in line just as easily with a couple great matches in normals.

And if you really wanted to prevent this sort of thing from happening, Riot could make it so you have to have played a minimum of 5 matches with a champion after the mastery system went live in order for your average grade to show up. That way, it'll be more difficult for a bad match or two to really tank your average.

You said that players who've played the game for years will pick up new champions much faster than newer players. So, a new player might be able to play the champion just fine after one game, but have to play 2-3 more to unlock them for ranked. You also have the added frustration that it might take 10 games if you keep losing them because of afk/trolls/etc. in the normal games. Meanwhile, an inexperienced player might not even understand how to play the champion after 2 games.

Anyway, it probably wouldn't change anything. Most people would see what they consider to be the current OP thing, and would just go spam a few games in normals (possibly even trolling those games just to get a quick resolution) to unlock that champion for ranked. You'd end up with more-or-less the same situation, but with a lot more frustrated people being negative in normal games.

That's why I said, since Riot clearly has access to your match history dating far back into the past, they should easily be able to give players who have played champions prior to the mastery system the opportunity to play them. Like I said, the mastery system is too new to base things entirely upon it yet, so that could be done to compensate during the initial rollout and it could be based on champion mastery entirely from then on.

And it would take like 4-5 losses to reach Level 2, which would likely be the end result were they to troll them, so if they showed the average grades like I suggested then it would be an easy dodge indicator for other players.

Alright, I'll bite. I personally don't like the concept of tying champion mastery into a requirement for ranked play as it makes players who have been playing for a long time have to spend time getting 16 champions to mastery level X (doesn't matter about actual level requirement), which would frustrate veteran players, especially considering how it takes a few games to move up in mastery and players may not have the time to set up for that but still want to participate in the ranked experience.
