I feel like Poppy is missing something. (incoming downvotes)

So I just played a game of Poppy top vs Aatrox and I can honestly say I didn't have fun (I got my ass handed to me, but that wasn't the annoying part. The annoying part is that I didn't feel I could really do anything in lane).

Now granted I don't take her top all that much, I pretty much only play her in the jungle (but I was first pick and no one had Sion and picking Sion first is a death sentence so I went Poppy) so I probably don't know how to play her well in top. Advice would be nice.

Anyway, I felt like Poppy was missing something in top lane. She can't really put up much pressure if she can't use her E->Q combo to a wall. So if the enemy is smart enough to not be near a wall (which was a lot more difficult back with her previous range I'll admit) then they can pretty much avoid her threat output. Setting this up however feels like the same problem as playing Illaoi, it's just do damn obvious that she's trying to position herself to smack you against a wall with this new range.

Now I'm not saying the range nerfs were not warranted. Poppy was pretty powerful and needed some nerfs. But look at her winrate now: http://champion.gg/champion/Poppy

Top is at 46.71% according to champion.gg, with what looks like more overall deaths than kills or assists (according to that lovely graph in the link). Is it ok for her to have a high death average?

And this is just her top lane, the lane she was primarily built for. Her jungle (which her champion reveal does mention as another path for her) doesn't seem to be played enough to even be registered on champion.gg

"Creeping around a forest crowded with monsters is considerably less frightening when you’re wielding a giant mallet, and the Keeper of the Hammer is more than capable of heading into the jungle, harvesting gold from camps and ganks.

The tight confines of the jungle paths keep her well-stocked on walls to heroically charge into should the opposing jungler wander in unwarily. Her innate tankiness and strong trading potential makes her potent in woodland duels, while her considerable crowd control makes the featherweight fighter a terror during attempted ganks.

Setting up a Keeper’s Verdict while hidden inside the brush can dramatically turn the tide when counter-ganking, because she can near-instantly transform 3v2s and 2v1s into a numbers advantage for her team.

When Poppy heads into the jungle, having allies who can help speed her up or combo with her crowd control will make for more effective ganks, but the tiny tussler is designed to be a powerful roaming jungle in her own right."

After her most recent nerfs, her jungling fell to the lowest winrate, then disappeared.

I know I'm going to get downvoted for this. I know everyone just hates Poppy when she was strong, but she doesn't exactly feel that balanced or fair right now. She just feels weak and slow.

Maybe I'm just playing her wrong. If I am, then I'd like some tips on how to play her better. I like playing her as a tank and hate that I can't do much with her.

She's still viable and is a common pick in pro games.

She's just pretty difficult and a lot of players do dumb stuff with her ult to cause her to lose games.

It's not her ult I've had problems with, at least nothing on the lines of stupid (I've missed it a few times).

I would consider getting 0 benefit from her longest and most powerful cooldown to be something that you should definitely work on reducing the odds of.

You're probably right. My biggest issue is gauging when would be the best time to use it. Yesterday for example I used a fully charged up to knock a Nasus off of my Lucian, only to realize that I knocked the Nasus into a teamfight that two of my teammates were already losing.

It was pretty awkward actually.

If you were that split up, you were probably just losing that fight to begin with.

Maybe, but the fact that she's viable somewhere means she has uses.

the sad truth is this.

Riot spent all this time reworking her so that she;d be a viable top and champ altogether.

Then they nerf her to hard and she is no longer viable.

Riot ruined their own rework by nerfing her to hard.

Even if she's not viable right now, at least she's not a steaming pile of shit the way old poppy was.

pile of shit the way old poppy was.

Unlike Ekko , Kindred , Zed etc ?

SaltyKracka1 votes

Fucked concept, overpowered, overrated.

Don't get me wrong, I hate playing against Zed just as much as the next guy, but he's nothing like the time old poppy was strong.

Kindred frankly is in need of number nerfs, and Ekko is just a problem nobody knows what quote to do with.

They're not going to buff her until she stops being so incredibly powerful in competitive play.

...Probably by nerfing the movespeed on her W. Shit's basically a free escape.

Ralanr1 votes

I feel like that's because of her ultimate. It's a very powerful disengage.

SaltyKracka1 votes

Except that most of Poppy's competitive power comes from TP'ing in with her W on, slamming opponents into the wall, and then tapping ult to lock them down basically forever.

So this way, they have three options to shift power from. Her E slam (presumably the stun duration), her ult (especially the instant tap lockdown), and her W (which is...well, much more powerful in competitive play, yes, but is also a major resistance and movespeed steroid).

And frankly, given that she already has her E, I think hitting Poppy's mobility from W would be the proper way of shifting power in her kit.

Not to mention the removal of the AA reset in her passive.

Linna Excel1 votes

Yeah, I'm thinking she's mainly popular in the pros because her W gives her a ton of value on a coordinated team.
