Reality Message for anyone who plays this game more than they should

**Please do not move this thread, this has EVERYTHING to do with gameplay. Moving this thread will cause a lot of harm that could have been prevented. **

I love gaming. I absolutely love it.

I went from runescape to WoW to 2moons to S.U.N to Cabal to Tera to Black Desert to League of legends.

Let me tell you something.

Stop fucking dedicating your life to games. Your parents telling you to get off the computer... Thats not a fucking ''just worried'' statement. Thats them telling you you will regret it..

My brother who's a lot older told me and screamed at me once. Told me ''your going to be jealous of your friends... you'll see one day''

I'm 21 years old and i dont work and im not even going to school full time. Matter of fact im retaking Calc 3 because i dropped it mid semester due to excessive gaming making me not understand shit and failing tests. And im also retaking Chemistry ( My 3rd time ) because you know why? Because i didnt give a fuck.

Im young as hell, 21 years old and already complaining? Listen. My best friend since 13 is graduating next year as an engineer at 22. And you know what? ima be in the same fuckin footsteps until im 25 and graduate You know why? Because gaming. Because im a fucking idiot and let this shit take over my life.

I dont like school. I think working for 8 dollars an hour is an idiot move and i'd rather not make anything instead.

Lazy? Idiotic? Stupid? Yeah thats me. But you know why im putting this message out there? Honestly?

Theres one fuckin reason. I wish my dad busted my computer and told me to stop fuckin doing this and made me get a job.. But he didnt.

The only reason im explaining this shit? Because its a disease. You know when you take alcohol away from an alcoholic and they feel the side effects and life feels different?

Yeah thats happening to me. When i dont game i feel like shit, i feel horrible and like life is different. Im getting that reality check that fortunately people get when they hit 25+ and have been doing a lot worse shit..

I just hope i can change one of you man.. Even if your 16 or 17 dont let games get to your head... This isnt my main account. My main is P2 and i have 740k mastery points on caitlyn

When i see that number... 740k... It makes me fucking depressed... People say 100k is a lot and i dont even remember playing caitlyn 100 times...

I know some of you are going to say ''fuckin loser, moderation, i game a lot and have a life'' Yeah well our experiences are different. Maybe i was just born a fuck up.

But one things for sure, My best friend thats going to have his gown and get that engineering career next year... Meanwhile im going to TRY <--- (ATTEMPT ) to transfer to that same school hes in right now... Ima feel like fuckin shit seeing him in that gown and knowing i have 3 years MORE after next year to do what he just finished.. And hes my best fuckin friend same age....

I hope one of you realizes man.. Just one of you reads this.

Goodluck man.. happy gaming

We all end our lives in the same way - we die. All that matters in the end is did we enjoy our life and did we do anything useful for humanity. Ideally both answers should be yes, and in fact the former gives the latter. If you are truly passionate about something you will create lots of awesome stuff in your area of interest. But OP, you don't seem to be passionate, you just seem upset that your friend has better results in one of many respected professions. If you played games instead of becoming an engineer after you already started your courses and prioritized games over your studies, then this profession is most likely not for you. You are trying to pursue some generic idealized goal which you have all rights in the world to do, but please, don't pretend this is the best way to live a life.

I'm going to charge straight in with what will undoubtedly be an unpopular opinion but; This isn't even true, games are just a distraction. TV is just a distraction. Social media is just a distraction. Truth of the matter is that all of this shit is inane and, for the vast majority, is an unfulfilling waste of time - the exception being those 0.1% of make money off of, or gain notoriety off of these platforms. I.e streamers, Social Media personalities and those who become so well versed in TV shows that they go onto direct or make popular commentaries on them. But they are literally just the exception, and largely just because doing this inane shit grants them success. For pretty much anyone else Games are just a quick dopamine release - they get you feeling something about nothing, they make you feel like you've accomplished something when really you haven't - they give you false high's and lows and tons of instant gratification. Humans weren't build for instant gratification, they largely will not function well under instant gratification - which is why shit like porn and games can be so dangerous.

This guy played games because he was hooked on the instant gratification, the highs and lows that video games gave him and prioritised it (like lol, why wouldn't he?) over the delayed gratification that would have been achieved by sitting down, studying his ass off and getting a goddamned great degree. Not because of some passion bullshit. Don't get me wrong, passion is great and all but can be largely overrated and deceiving, using 'Passion' as a way to justify a massive disconnect from reality is often not the way to go.

You are absolutely right, those activities you listed are all distractions from "serious business". But human mind needs distraction, we are not robots who can work fiercely 24/7/365. And then people find their way to entertain themselves. It can be booze, drugs, TV, games, extreme sports - something that blows and refreshes your mind and disconnects you from reality for brief moments. Then it comes down to how well you can control yourself to not be overly addicted to something. Some are good at controlling themselves, some are not. If a person is an "instant gratification addict" and puts artificial constrains to absolutely deny such activities, at some point it will explode, possibly leading to even worse consequences. Games are arguably one of the least harmful ways to distract yourself.

"Free money from a game" implying that going to work is somehow more noble than playing a game for the same reason.

Implying that playing a game actually contributes something significant and worthwhile to society. Furthermore, there are no continued job prospect for a League of Legends gamer after League inevitably goes belly up or loses popularity. Furthermore, there is a reason why you don't see old pro gamers, eventually their reaction speed and capability to play a game proficiently will drop, after which they will unable to find a job outside of gaming as they have no real qualifications. Don't delude yourself. Pro gamers and many basketball/soccer/football/baseball players are no different from racehorses, after they make their owners rich, off to the chophouse with them. So, while I understand that working for someone isn't all that noble, having no good future isn't good either.

I only agree to this to an extent. You can do both games and school without screwing up your life.

However, you shouldn't quit a passion because school/college is more reliable and effective than playing video games. You should mix the two together and fine a way to learn your passion and get really good at it.

That's my 2 cents at least.

LegacyDAP5 votes

That's where it's hard, if you enjoy both then that's great and keep doing both of those things and do both to moderate. Don't completely throw away games, but don't let them take over your life. You don't have to mix both of them (might be options in the future for it).

I'm saying if your real passion is engineering and you love it over everything and it's genuinely the only thing you like, become the best engineer. It's the same if video games are your real passion and it's the only thing you love, then work towards your goal to becoming the best League player.

If you've ever seen "October Sky" it's a great example of what I'm trying to explain.

LegacyDAP8 votes

Well, not everything in life you're going to enjoy to succeed in getting your dream job. School is a prime example of this because everybody hates school, but everyone wants to be doctors or engineers. School is the first step towards achieving that, so of course you're going to want to do other hobbies over doing the steps to achieve your dream job.

However, in the long run if you work towards your passion it's much more satisfying and extremely worth it, but you can still keep your hobbies without throwing them away if you keep them under control.

If this is about controlling your hobbies and not letting stuff get in the way of your overall goal. I totally agree with you, but you don't have to throw away all fun for them. Unless you're working towards becoming the best.

I didn't like college, the studying, tests, and stress. But I got through because I didn't want life to leave me behind, I wanted to be seen as a success, and to have a good life.

I don't love work, getting up early, dealing with angry people, meeting work expectations. But I do it because it is a ladder that I need to climb to continue improving my life. Higher pay, more vacation time, better benefits. They all contribute to my quality of life.

So far I am 23, have a secure job, looking to buy a house, and I love playing league in my spare time.

LXII15 votes

There is no "right" way to live your life. 740k mastery points on a champion can be just as rewarding as a degree in someone's eyes. The problem isn't gaming "taking over your life" it's that you think you have to go and do all this other stuff to be as much of a person as everyone else. I do pretty much nothing but play video games, I feel like a bum sometimes, but it's whatever. This is what I want to do, I abhor working and I haven't found a schooling path that can keep me passionate past the first couple semesters. I've taken enough college courses that I could have a doctorate if I had chosen that to begin with.

And you know what, I have no regrets. If you personally don't want to keep playing games as much as you do now, then more power to you, and I hope you can pull away from it. But if this is what you want to do and you're letting some preconceived notion of what it means to be a person drive you away.. well fuck that. Sure, life isn't gonna be glamorous, but it's whatever. We all die anyway man, do what makes you happy until then.

Government can only do so much. Parents were from wealthy families that lost literally everything when the communists took over. Fortunately finished their education before everything went to shit and were able to make themselves valuable in America. Education is the one thing that stays with you until death.

tbh I'm sorry for your fate Chrio... Games are not meant for everyone and the pure fact you're feeling all of this about it just means the games are not maybe your passion. One you'd want to make a life of. But who are you to tell others to live tho? Thank you for looking out for those whom wish for other things in life other then games. Games can be horrible distractions when the subject at hand wishes to make something else of their lifes. For me, I play all day everyday. I may not be the best, I may not have made a "right" decision in your eyes or anyone elses. All I know for sure is, do not bother freaking yourself out like that. You know what you want, and so you must do it. Looking at it like that may help some, but for you I'm really just not sure if the influences around you tainted your views on gaming.... or if this is genuinely you, and if it is you must go by what your heart and mind tell you. No addiction is powerful enough to sway the mind forever unless such mind is feeble and losted without hope enough to believe they cannot do it. I believe in you, and anyone else out there that wishes to break away from the addiction of gaming. Do not however see it as a waste of time, if you're continuely learning the game, taking advice and scaling. You must find the team that works with you, be it pro or not. Then seek the means of turning dreams and goals to reality but none the less if thats not what you want then like you said Finish schooling and get that degree or whatever at 25+. Don't compare yourself to anothers accomplishments. Accept your assumed flaws and work past them. Either way thank you if you read this and if you see me wrong disregard this, I'm only here because it makes me unimaginably sad to see someone think this way.

This kid is 100% wrong. I just went through the same shit bro. League to WoW with some Diablo mixed it. Graduated college with Mech Eng degree in 7 years after changing majors 4x and smoking way too much pot. Since breaking away I've had 2 huge career moves, hit the gym daily, rekindled a ton of long lost friendships, and realized that addiction will always be there. Otherwise I wouldn't be on the forums commenting right now. It's gonna be a constant battle but homie you gotta be strong, mentally, physically, and spiritually to overcome the hype. Keep busy and always remind yourself it has and will never benefit you or your loved ones in any way. Namaste.

Everyone is different - I've played MOBAs since being one of the original beta testers for the DOTA custom map when it was all just Warcraft III. Immediately fell in love with that style of gameplay. I've dedicated thousands of hours to it and other video games over the course of my life and absolutely love RPG games (Final Fantasy) and dungeon slashers (Diablo II at the age of 6...). That being said I was also a competitive swimmer who competed at the Olympic Trials when I was 16 and would swim 30+ hours a week from the time I was 13, and only 10 - 20 hours before that age. I managed to graduate college with a 3.86 GPA with a Finance degree, did several internships, clubs, went out and swam on the Texas A&M swim team for 3 years. Now I work in corporate finance and do quite well for myself slowly working my way up through the corporate world.

To this day I still play what most people would consider an unhealthy amount of gaming and you know what? I love it and won't change that. I do well in other aspects, if you can manage your time efficiently, you'd be surprised just how much you can actually do.

I didn't write this with the intention to gloat although it probably sounds like it. I just wanted to make a point - find balance in your life and learn to manage your time. Maybe just spam Akali and balance will come to you.

So stop spending time on the boards and go get a job, then. I don't know why you're on here complaining to us about it. It's not a disease, you're just immature and still haven't figured out what your real problem is. Drug addicts suffer from a chemical dependency, it's a disease.

That's not you, you just suffer from an inability to take responsibility. See you know that you're doing stupid shit, but you're on here complaining to us about how video games are responsible. If you think you need a job go get one. If you think you should graduate faster then increase your hours and take full semesters in summer. If you think you can't handle that then drop college altogether and just work full time. Sheesh.

PS: I have an IT job I never went to school for, as I spent most of my time on the computer, which I could have accomplished through going to school and hating my life. Instead I played games and enjoyed my time and have a job related to it.

I believe this post doesn't belong in the gameplay section, for your points are not relevant to gameplay in League of Legends. So what if you have 740k mastery points on Caitlyn? No, this does not have everything to do with gameplay. It is a rant about your life and how it was sucked away by gaming, which should belong on facebook and/or /r/im14andthisisdeep. I know this sounds condescending and disparaging. What right do I have to meddle in your affairs?

However, I would also consider your post to be meddling in others' affairs. When people start feeding insanity with a sob story, I advise people to take some advice from the post (don't get so addicted to games that you fail/drop classes), but please don't support this type of spam post that doesn't belong on the boards.

Despite the fact that most of the post is negative, please do not be depressed about your life and go start a new one.

To be honest, I'm the kind of person who gets tired of playing video games. I used to be someone who played LoL so much that I'd lose sight on reality at times. However, I'm not sure what happened, but video games just aren't appealing to me anymore once I see all the opportunities for me out there. Hell, I spend three times as much of my free time on the Boards than actually playing the game. It's so worth it once you find a social hobby and strike the balance. Also, I've made my academic mistakes, and I've learned they mostly come from two things:

  1. Procrastination.
  2. Indifference to assignments.

There are those days when you think "yeah, I'll do that later." Don't. Assume the free time you have now is the only free time you'll have. Think like this: I can finish all my work now, and do other things later.

And I know how indifference is. Hell, I skipped most of a semester of math class because I just didn't feel it was worth my time. You gotta work hard to feel good about your accomplishments.

As a fellow college student who is still struggling to find his place in life, I wish you the best of luck, and never stop pursuing your TRUE goals. League is a pastime, don't let it consume your life as it has done to some.

I'm 21 and i still don't have a job. Sometimes I feel so useless and i wish to be more usefull for my family and for my life. And i do not feel proud when i start another game. Maybe i could spend my time in a better way. But i've figured out that even if i spend all my time making "usefull" thinks (and i've actually try this), well, i fell actually sad and useless like i spend my time doing something "funny". I mean, when you spend time with your friends, actually you are doing NOTHING but have fun. You can't complain yourself for this. We are not full-work time robots. We need also fun, love, ect. I know that you fell "useless" but even when you will get a work, you will still need a break. Take me. I play a lot. Almost everyday. But i also read a lot, write a lot (i just finished my first book and i'm trying to publish it) and all other life's stuff. I have also to study and this is going not so good atm (i'm not studing so much this period, but i can assure you it's not gaming fault. I NEVER failed exams cause of gaming). So, gaming is a part of my life, but it's not MY life. Am i happy while play? Sure Am i happy with my life? Not totally, but this is not due of gaming.

tophit4 votes

Playing video games does have a point. At the end of the day to relax, something to do at the weekend to enjoy in your time off.

However, if video games become your life, then yes, you will grow up realizing you're not good at anything outside of a computer screen with very few transferable skills that help you in the real world.

Its definitely important to find other things that you enjoy so you become a better/well rounded person. Some sort of hobby that challenges you, gets you out of the house, etc.

One thing that is very important to remember though, is that life doesn't end when you leave school. So what if you spent your teenage years on a computer, people change as they get older. It's never too late to learn or try something new.

I go to university, I am a student of the Law, I work in call center (Customer service) 6 hours every single day for minimum payment as a student and I play like 3 games every single game. The only thing that changed since I started to take my life goals a bot more serious is that I stopped rankeds because I didn't want to tilt. And I am happy. I used to play WoW 14 hours every single day, eating, smoking, drinking in front of PC lol and I am just 23.....Than I started league of Legends and played up to 7-10 games per day...lol I ruined my life literally. Now I am clean....3 games per day is enough since I don't have enough of time, I go to university, job, gym...I am fine.

Play games as long as they help you grow and improve in some way, even something small. For example, League helps me with creativity because of the lore, art, sound, etc. The gaming experience itself models how to set small goals and reach them. There is nothing wrong with that (in fact, there are plenty of "successful" people who do not understand this concept. Maybe gaming would help?). However, once the gaming experience starts taking from you in some way, or degrading you, then it's time to move on. That is the point I am at with LoL and eSports. I'm no gaining anything from it now. It is just a time suck. Time to move on!
