My take on Yasuo.

Agree or not, please read the whole post.

I've seen Yasuo get compared to Riven a lot. They are both highly mobile resourceless skirmishers who benefit heavily from AD. So why is it that tank Yasuo is a problem right now, and tank Riven is not?

I have an idea as to why. Riven has her E, Valor. This gives her a shield that scales on her bonus AD.

I hear some of you saying, "But Yasuo has his flow shield from his passive and his W, Windwall."

This is true, but Valor is much more reliable because it can be activated when needed, it lasts longer, it is stronger, and it is available much more often.

Yasuo's Flow Shield is barely noticeable when playing him. It definitely helps him, but it pops way too fast, then you have no other defensive stats other than what you get from your items, runes, masteries, buffs, and so on. He can still use his Windwall but that only helps against projectiles and he needs to be at close range to be able to deal damage.

So because of this, players need to decide to invest in offensive or defensive stats. He is meant to be played offensive, but if you are not already ahead, offensive stats are significantly less reliable than defensive stats.

Everyone keeps saying that he needs to be nerfed so he doesn't benefit as much from defensive stats. I just don't understand what it is that they can nerf within his kit that will accomplish this since he already doesn't benefit from defensive stats based on any part of his kit. He benefits from defensive stats in the same way that anyone benefits from them. instead he needs to be encouraged to build offensive and nerfing his damage will not do that. Purely nerfing his base damage and increasing his damage ratios wont fix the issue either. All that will do is make it so a mostly defensive kit will be stronger with a little bit of offense. He needs to gain defense from offensive stats.

I have an idea, but I don't know if this would honestly be the best way to fix the problem without a complete rework.

His Flow Shield is honestly his most useful defensive ability.

I think buffing this can be helped with one or multiple of the following

  • Gain flow faster,

  • Resolve: Yasuo generates 1% (+1% per XX bonus AD) of his maximum Flow for every 59 / 52 / 46 units he travels by any means.

    • Gaining Resolve faster through bonus AD will make her Flow Shield up more often. It would still not be controlled, but it would be more noticeable. I do not know what would be a good number of bonus AD to have it scale on, but this would need to be balanced heavily.
  • Increase the amount of damage blocked

  • At maximum Flow, the next instance of champion or monster damage against Yasuo consumes all of his Flow and shields him for 100 - XXX (based on level) (+100% bonus AD) damage

    • Decreasing the base stats of the shield late game and adding a 100% bonus AD scale would help to reward Yasuo for buying AD. (Kinda the whole idea)
  • Increase the duration.

  • for up to 1 (+ 0.25 per XXX Total AD) seconds.

    • I sometimes feel that his shield is simply too short, and gets popped too soon to be useful when engaging or being engaged upon.

I want to repeat that I do not expect that all three of these would work because together they would all be pretty strong, but one or two of the three would be helpful.

I suppose it could be possible for these figures to be scaled by other offensive stats but I think attack speed, movement speed, and critical strike chance are already very heavily focused for his kit. When I try to look for what stats would be good to balance a champion around, I look at what items are available that provide those stats, and other stats that are valuable to the champion. There are several items that provide attack speed, movement speed, and critical strike chance, but few items that provide either of these and attack damage. Because of this, I feel that basing these stats on AD would not overly buff his offense, however, I also want to say that I do understand that some changes to his other stats may be needed as well.

And of course, I fully expect that I will most likely get downvotes on this, even if it is a good idea. People just don't like Yasuo right now, and are honestly being childish about it. I can say this for sure though, Riot is absolutely not going to delete him, so you might as well get on board with the idea of him either being adjusted, or him continuing to be strong.

So give a champ that can already carry prettyhard a shield that's going to block around 300 damage lvl18 and decrease base stats, up the ratios? Seems like this gives yasuo less risk more reward overall and a taper on an early game that was already very strong. Would be a buff to a toxic champ everyone hates already. I'd just advise to up the cd on windwall and lower its duration to fix the problem.

It seems you missed my whole point. The fact that he lacks any form of reliable defense in his kit is exactly why people are building him tank.

Yes, this will make him more offensive, which is exactly where Riot wants him.

As I mentioned, I would only expect for one or two of the things I suggested to actually be implemented. If he has a shield that blocks more damage, or blocks damage over a longer period of time, or that is available more often, all which are supported by building offensive, then he will be less likely to be built defensive. Less defense from items and slightly more defense from his kit would ultimately result in more commonly offensive builds over defensive.

Yeah you want to give Yasuo defense as his passive i get it. He is supposed to be a high risk/high reward champ which is why buffing his shield is a bad idea. It's the kind of thing that Riot has worked relentlessly against because they dont like that people can build fizz akali yasuo ekko etc... tanky and still get the rewards of their high damage without the risk of being squishy/dying.

Okay, so it sounds like you understand what i'm saying, but I'm not sure you see how what I'm suggesting actually helps to accomplish that. Currently people are trading his risk for reliability because the reward is not good enough for building offensive. He will be able to deal a great amount of damage, but he is not able to reliably survive long enough to deal that damage. By buying a defensive kit he is able to survive long enough that the smaller amount of damage that he deals from his base stats and item effects offer a greater reward with less risk. By bringing his risk/reward closer to an average, you are actually bringing him closer to where he is meant to be.

I just think Riot intends for him to be high risk/reward and wants to make the tank build perhaps viable but not so rewarding. If you take his risk/reward towards average I think Yasuo is losing some of his intended identity.

Again, you are either not reading or not understanding.

As long as tank Yasuo offers a greater reward with less risk he will continue to be a problem.

Riot should increase the reward and decrease the risk of building him offensively to get him where he should be. Doing so will still leave him with a greater risk and a greater reward than tank build.

He's already borderline OP full offense. Do you not understand how much damage he can put out even if he goes 5 ad and a ga? He does not need a buff to his ad ratios and a bigger shield lmao. Post using your main yasuolover69.

When he's ahead, .. if he gets ahead, ... which is exactly why people are opting for the tank option because there is less risk. ... for the fifth time now...

If the game goes long and everyone gets their items yasuo is already one of the strongest scalers. Just stop. You know its a bad idea. You love yasuo too much.

Make a tl;dr next time please.

No, read the whole thing. If what I was saying could be summed up accurately in two sentences the whole post would be two sentences.

tl;dr Yasuo's flow shield should be augmented so that it compensates for his lack of scaling with defensive stats and encourages people to build offensively.

Is that a good tl;dr...?

Is that a good tl;dr...?

No because it's inaccurate. He does not scale with defensive stats at all, and he is not meant to. It would be more accurate to say that he has no defensive scaling period. This post is meant to describe how giving a defensive scaling based on offensive statistics will bring him away from building defensive items. However it is important to explain why this is necessary and how it can be accomplished.

Is it really that hard to read the whole post?

The tl;dr I gave you said the exact same thing you just said.... lmfao. Yes, I know he doesn't scale with defensive stats, and I also know that you want to give defensive scaling with offensive stats, hence why the tl;dr was:

"Yasuo's flow shield should be augmented so that it compensates for his lack of scaling with defensive stats and encourages people to build offensively".

And no, it's not hard to read the whole post, but a tl;dr helps in more ways than one.

"Yasuo's flow shield should be augmented so that it compensates for his lack of scaling with defensive stats and encourages people to build offensively".

The fact that the tl;dr you provided has any interpretation issues is exactly why I don't use them.

Tl;dr literally means "too long; didn't read"

Basically a way of giving someone an excuse to say "I'm too lazy to actually take the time to attempt to get a full understanding of exactly what it is that you're trying to say before judging my level of interest, regardless of the effort you put into expressing it"

If that is the way someone wants to be, go ahead and fuck off without reading or commenting.
