Can we talk Vlad, lifesteal, and viability?

So I have been trying to pick up vlad for ages now, but every time I try, you just get so easily rekt. I mean I run 45% cooldowns and it's still not enough to keep up with the healing of melee champions. I mean a champion based on lifesteal and blood and what not being out life stolen..... Nevermind trying to play with item 3123 in game. I know I am just learning the champion, but it just seems that he is not viable. In fights against melee champions he is always 1 second of a cooldown away from surviving, even with 45% cool down. His lifesteal is blocked easily as item 3123 this is used on auto attacks for melee champions and the only way for him to block lifesteal is item 3165 which require them to be below 40% hp and Vlad can't pull that off, he isn't a heavy hitter. It just seems anyone with lifesteal rekts you, while you sit back and take it, never mind being weak nearly all game, and barely hanging on late game. I mean he is barely viable in urf until 40 minutes in.

Does anyone have any advice? I mean I have run every build, tanky, lifesteal, attack speed (which is good against towers). I know Riot has stated they hated Vlad and regret making him, but I don't think it's fair to keep him in the dark.

Stop focusing on his sustain, start focusing on his damage/mechanics.

That's how you play Vlad successfully.

Working with your damage windows to mitigate their sustain to effectively burst them down.

Vlad's issues lay with game pacing, not competition with his niches.

so attack speed and lifesteal aren't the best for a mage. You wanna build him like other battle mages:with sustained damage, chasing potential and enough survivability. So on the lines of protobelt, rylais, spirit visage and other depending on the situation. Let's be honest early game vlad sucks. With a 8+ sec cooldown on q he definitely can't do any sustained damage so early you wanna farm hard, poke if possible and if they're low enough burst with empowered q. Late game is easy.

Remove grievous wounds and severely cut healing down to compensate.

FTFY.

The goal is not to have GW effectively always active, its to find a median between GW state and lack thereof.

Rylai's isn't bad, its just not a must-have.

You pick it up any time there's high mobility or a risky kiteable champ you have to deal with. Otherwise, you should be grabbing Liandry's now, and in some rare circumstances, SV.

Considering how important having ghost or flash up is atm, you want Ionian. Replace spirit visage and/or protobelt with abyssal/liandry's/rylai's.

SV+PB combo has an absurdly low winrate atm. Its not good. You give up too much damage. Use one or the other.

Abyssal spikes you just as hard.

10% bonus damage is nothing to sneeze at, and it lets you flank fights effectively without worrying much about other AP's spikes mid-game.

Its strong enough that Abyssal+Protobelt is often worth having over Zhonya's at all in some cases.

My point about Abyssal vs Spirit Visage is that Abyssal has the large advantage early-mid because it doesn't extend your early-mid game low-point. Building Spirit Visage early delays damage too much.

Then you look at mid-late game. Again, Abyssal has the advantage because, due to his passive, the HP difference is around 300 HP. Meanwhile your damage is much greater, and healing is slightly greater than SV builds as well.

Spirit Visage is used as a rush to wall a lane you normally couldn't scale in; mostly mid.

As far as protobelt goes, its really preference. I don't prefer it because I don't have a problem with getting Es or Qs off at all. I can compensate the lack of it through positioning. There is an argument to be made about the burst of the active, but the most successful use of it relies on Dark Seal start and even heading into Mejai's (Yes really; a challenger 1 trick is who brought this strategy to light). Its success seems to be much lower in other cases.

In addition, I never have problems with my burst. It always seems like I have more than enough, and protobelt DOES NOT add the DPS I often find myself needing on the level of Abyssal, which also adds to burst pretty significantly.

Regardless of what the active provides, Vlad still needs AP, and too many of his 'good' items are relatively low AP now. To the point where you often have to sacrifice Zhonya's, Rylai's, or Protobelt in your build. Abyssal is starting to look like more and more of a non-negotiable to many people, especially due to the multiplicative nature of his R, Abyssal, and Masteries. That's around a 36% damage increase. The fact that its such a reliable rush in many cases that also guarantees an impact in teamfights only adds to this.

The choice of rush items currently boils down to Protobelt or Abyssal. It is preference, but I would put money on Abyssal being better if more people were familiar with how Vlad is actually played to reliable success.

Abyssal+Void is enough to make Vlad relevant in this meta and also allow him to continue to scale, even when behind. Meanwhile Protobelt relies on having a lead. Its good when you have that lead, but pretty lackluster when you don't. That said, you can grab Abyssal+Protobelt too. Nothing's stopping you, but its often giving up Zhonya's or a sizeable amount of AP.

Spirit Visage is a win-more item on him now. Its only real use is a rush in an AP match-up that you would not have been able to lane against with Abyssal.

Also there was a typo in an above post; I meant to say Rylai's just isn't must-have. Not that it IS must have. Lol.

Its really good in some games, not so much in others.

If there's a single person building MR, or even has 12 flat MR runes, I'd say Void is non-negotiable. If they have 45 or greater MR, void trumps Liandry's, and otherwise the difference is moot. The cost of Void makes it more desirable, though.

Look at how much you do to squishies without having the full 30+ magic pen. There is such a thing as over-kill to the point where magic pen becomes inefficient. In the cases outside of that, Void is almost universally better.

That's about what you should be looking to build, though. I find myself wanting Ionian over sorc in a lot of cases, but then again I run flash/ghost universally; top and mid. I run 12/18 as opposed to 0/18/12 though.

In this absurd damage meta, I may start using TP/Exhaust again, though. Too many things can faceroll at you early game and win.
