People keep misusing win/pick/ban data

chipndip1··11 votes·6,897 views

I see this quite often: If a popular champ is getting raged on again, people pull up ban rates. If an unpopular champ is being discussed, people pull up pick rates. And most of the time, people will fling around win rates and no one cares because everyone's halfway skeptical about them. I'm making this thread to address how poorly the community utilizes these three demographics.

Win rate: The issue I have with win rates is that people just outright disregard them whenever they want. If you're making a claim about how strong or weak some champ is, you need stats to back it up, and general win rates are one way to do that. You can't just say "This champ's op", and when they have a 47% win rate in your elo, you make excuses as to why that doesn't matter. You ALSO can't say a champ's NOT op, and then when someone points out a massive 54% win rate in Diamond elo, you turn around and say "Everyone's just playing against the champ wrong".

Like, I agree that you shouldn't blindly follow win rate stats, and it's good that people want to be skeptical about them, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Everything needs to be done within reason, and that includes utilizing or not utilizing win rate stats to make a point.

Pick rate: The issue with pick rate is that people like to either ignore or abuse it to make a point. If a champion's doing "pretty good", people will say "Well, they have a 4% pick rate so this 53% win rate champion should be buffed a little bit" (this was an actual conversation I had with someone about Katarina in another thread on Gameplay, but I don't remember which thread. You could surf my post history if you want to burn that time). Or they'll be talking on Lee or Yasuo or whoever that's more infamous and say "Well, yeah, their win rate's like 48%, but their PICK RATE'S like 10%+ so they should be nerfed".

As far as pick rate goes, if you want to use it for a credible argument, a vastly large or abnormally small pick rate could make a case about treating champion power differently. Someone with a 1%-ish pick rate? You could make the case that mains hold their stats up, even if they look ok (like how Morde plummeted after Morde jg made an LCS appearance and it started showing up in solo queue for a bit). If the number's super high, then you could make the case that the champ's generally even more powerful, and their stats are being dragged down cause everyone's on the champ's junk at the time. Most people actually are pretty decent with pick rate stats, unless they're incredibly biased, so that's not an issue to harp on. The ban rate thing, however, is, and it's the main reason I made this thread.

Ban rate: The issue when people use ban rate as an argument is that they assume that "Since X was banned, they were banned because they'd otherwise win that match", and it creates this mentality where people sort of "add" a champ's ban rate to their win rate when assessing how strong that champ is. That's just the wrong way to go about things.

For example, let's say you're running a race with 10 people, and for some crazy reason, your coach has the option to allow you to run this race and place where you end up, or he can say "Regardless of what place you get, you're gonna be 3rd place". You can be first, second, or dead last, but if your coach picks the latter option, what you ACTUALLY do won't matter anymore. Bans are kind of like that. If we have, say, Gragas, banned for 5 matches, you can't assume he'd have won or lost any of those matches. You can only state that people did not want to see him in those matches.

Bans aren't a statistic for how powerful a champ is more than they're a representation for how powerful the community thinks they are, just like how your coach simply thought you weren't fast enough, rather than actually seeing that you would have lost that race. Not saying there's no correlation, but I am saying there's no conclusion about champion power you can draw from ban data alone.

Conclusion: A healthy discussion generated from pick/ban/win rates can be done when you pay head to the general win rates, pick rates, and "champion main win rates". Ban rates should probably be reserved for other types of commentary, because they aren't a statement on the strength of a champ in the first place. Maybe you can say something like "Everyone hates this champ, see!?!?!?", but that doesn't make that champ good or not good more than it makes them annoying.

Ban rates tend to correlate well with champion strength and is at least as good if not better than win or pick rates. Ban and pick rates on average will artificially deflate win rates. It is hard to judge the magnitude but you can’t just ignore ban rates simply because they are hard to interpret.

That is probably a small sample size issue. (Or from past patches when she was busted as hell). Her global ban rates are single digits across all ranks

Ok, so why are Akali's ban rates high?

Like I said she's stro-

But when she gets through, she loses games until you get to like, Diamond elo. If we're being objective, no one should be banning her in Bronze - Gold, and she should only have a highly noticeable ban rate when you near Master+.

Also, does this mean Yasuo's just ALWAYS strong, even when he blatantly isn't top dog in mid lane? Yasuo's always got a high ban rate, regardless of how good he is, and everyone knows this. On Lolalytics, if you filter for Diamond and sort by ban rate, a ton of LCS favorites are up there in top spots...and then there's Yasuo with a 49% general win rate. What gives? Also, there's Morgana for some reason. Meanwhile, Lucian has a 54% general win rate and doesn't even have 1/3rd the ban rate as Akali, who has a mere 50% general win rate in comparison, meaning the odds of you losing to Lucian are significantly higher, yet people will still ban Akali anyway.

Ban rates are people's fears. Win rates are your reality. You can't make an objective conclusion based on fear alone, or the boogey man would have been arrested by now.

Because she is very strong, her winrates are deflated by her ban rates. Her banrate, while not a perfect measure of her strength, is a far better representation of her strength than her artificially deflated winrate which is sub 50 in many brackets.

Also, does this mean Yasuo's just ALWAYS strong, even when he blatantly isn't top dog in mid lane? Yasuo's always got a high ban rate, regardless of how good he is, and everyone knows this. It means that Yasuo’s winrate is always artificially deflated to some degree.

Winrates are far from reality. They are artificially deflated by high pick and ban rates and rarely reflect the true strength of a champion with high pick and ban rates. Pick and ban rates, despite all of their flaws, usually correlate better with champion strength than winrates when a champion has extremely low or extremely high pick+ban rates because of how inaccurate winrate is in those cases

Then how about games where people ban something just because they don't want others to play it?

When I started playing Taliyah jungle, I had her banned by my own team several times just because they didn't want me to play her.

Where are those bans calculated?

You can't say why something is banned, and it's obviously not always because "it's strong". Look at the boards? They cry how weak Shaco is, yet he's my permaban because I hate him with a passion. He could had a 25% winrate and 0.5% play rate, I'd still ban him because I hate him. Again, where's that ban calculated?

Ban rates do not change on the whim of one player. You can ban shaco all you want, it won’t change his overall ban rate. Sometimes, champions are banned simply because 1 player hates that champion. Those are of little consequence. More often, champions are banned because they are extremely strong and the players who leave the champion open have specific picks or strategies against that champion. In those cases, the ban rates are very much deflating winrates. You have to look at the whole picture and predict what is likely happening.

When a champion has a very high pick and ban rate, there winrates get skewed to the point where you can no longer judge champion strength based off of them. In those cases, pick and ban rates despite all their flaws are more useful than win rates.

IP Masquerena4 votes

That still doesn't answer about the "I ban it because I don't want you to play it" example I gave with my Taliyah.

It wasn't just one player who banned her so I don't play her, and now, add that to the lower elos, where "I ban it so you don't play it" is the norm after "ban what I believe it's op", and you can get skewed ban rates. Most Yasuo bans in low elo are just that, they think the majorit of Yasuos suck, so they ban him so their team won't play him.

Ban rates are too subjective. You said that I can ban Shaco all I want, it won't change something just because I hate him. Now what about all those who perma ban Akali or Yasuo or others just because they hate them? Just because X hates Y champ doesn't mean Y is OP, even if on a high ban rate.

Zed is either pick or ban in my Silver elo, is he op?

Falls into the category of insignificant bans which don’t effect overall ban rates.

That is an interesting idea but far less likely than the fact that most people ban yasuo because they don’t like to play against him. However, that is a different subject, the main issue is that when ban rates get high, winrates become extremely unreliable.

Ban rates are too subjective. You said that I can ban Shaco all I want, it won't change something just because I hate him. Now what about all those who perma ban Akali or Yasuo or others just because they hate them? Just because X hates Y champ doesn't mean Y is OP, even if on a high ban rate.

Ban rates are subjective and far from perfect measure of champion strength but still better than winrates for high pick+ban champions which we know are artificially deflated. The question isn’t which one is perfect, we know none of the stats are perfect, it is which one sucks less.

Except he doesn't need too. That's the thing because we're only looking at the extreme cases when talking about those champs that are banned 25+% of the time and these are almost always reserved for people think said champ is op. Your own teammates banning out Janna top aren't gonna make Janna top magically have a 25% ban rate overall.

You might perma ban Shaco because you hate him but guess what a ton of people really hate playing against him. But his Ban rate is a whooping 4% because people would rather spend bans on champs they hate playing against that are actually powerful like Akali Irelia ect.

You comment actually helps prove the case of ban rate = strong champ. Since it blatantly disproves that annoying champ = frequent bans.

chipndip13 votes

That's such a bs claim to make.

"I'm right only when it's convenient for me to be right."

Banning a champion says something about what you think, not what actually is. You have no proof you'd win or lose any match against a champ you banned, and thus can't make that claim. This is as simple as this statement can be made for you.

IP Masquerena1 votes

Actually no, it doesn't disprove that annoying = frequent bans instead of strong = frequent bans.

I'll use Mobalytics' video on tier list, for just mid, jungle and top, as it should serve as a good enough example, as they don't say something is strong solely on winrates, and let's compare the ban rates of the S and A tier champs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u78yvIRw2Wc

This will be a long list

Top - low elo S tier

  • Kled - 1.1% ban rate
  • Viktor - 30% ban rate
  • Garen - 6.2% ban rate

A tier

  • Rengar - 4.3%
  • Sion - 8%

  • Urgot - 30.9%
  • Singed - 1.1%
  • Viktor - 39.5%
  • Jax - 22.4%
  • Sion - 4%
  • Kennen - 0.6%
  • Lissandra - 5.2%

Jungle - low elo S tier

A tier

  • Kayn - 8.6%

  • Nidalee - 8.7%
  • Kindred - 3.2%
  • Evelynn - 22.9%
  • Rek'sai - 0.4%
  • Kha'zix - 12.5%
  • Graves - 18.4%
  • Xin Zhao - 10.4%
  • Udyr - 0.6%

Mid - low elo S tier

  • Anivia - 1.8%
  • Zilean - 1.3%

A tier

  • Yasuo - 55%
  • Irelia - 54.8%
  • Heimerdinger - 1.1%
  • Veigar - 3.6%
  • Ekko - 2.3%
  • Ahri - 5.8%
  • Fizz - 11.4%
  • Kassadin - 18.5%
  • Vel'koz - 0.9%
  • Malzahar - 5.4%
  • Lux - 1.3%

Mid - high elo S tier

  • LeBlanc - 37.4%
  • Talon - 8%

A tier

  • Aurelion Sol - 1.1%
  • Katarina - 2.5%
  • Irelia - 64%
  • Twisted Fate - 1.5%
  • Ahri - 3.8%
  • Heimerdinger - 1.3%
  • Zilean - 1.8%
  • Kassadin - 28.9%
  • Annie - 0.7%
  • Lissandra - 5.2%

Ok, so how many of those have over 10% ban rate? (will calculate as single champs, even if they appear on multiple roles)

14 have over a 10% ban rate

How many champs are there? 45 (+/- 1). That's around 1/3 of the best champions having over 10% ban rate.

Now look at Akali. In Diamond she has a 77% ban rate with 48% winrate, in Gold 61% with 46% winrate. Heimer has over 55% in Diamond when it comes to win rate and 51% in Gold for example.

Going by pick rate, Akali has 9% in Gold, 8.4% in Diamond, Heimer has 3.7% in Diamond and 3.4% in Gold. Comsidering pick rates and winrates, you are more likely to lose to Heimerdinger than to Akali, regardless of elo, and the donger has even less counter play than her.

As you can see, ban rates aren't an example of how strong something is, as except Viktor and LeBlanc, nothing from S tier even has 10% ban rate. Irelia, Urgot, Aatrox are all A tier, meaning they can be beat, and the S tiers could do that, while Akali isn't even on the list, so we can't say "yea, she'll beat every one of them" or "yea, she'll lose to every one of those". Can she beat some of them? Probably, but in the same time, she can lose to others as well. Yes, they have high ban rates and are strong, but the list is to show that they aren't the strongest by any means and shows that you are more like to lose to other champs than to them.

Just because players don't like her doesn't mean she's super op broken cancer meta pick/ban.

The list is for solo que, as you'd never see Garen in pro play for example

BestPudgeNA2 votes

{quoted}

I'm gonna stop you right there. Those tier list are garbage. Without even looking i'm sure they're gonna use a bunch of low pick rate awful champs like Amumu, Shaco, Udyr maybe some Garen or Darius as S tier.

You literally have no proof of your claim. "Ban rates deflate your win rate" is the longest standing bullshit on these forums. A banned champion neither wins nor loses, and if they should have won, they'd just win the matches where they ARE picked. It's statistical data. Conclusions based on averages. You can't make a claim when you don't have a test, and bans are games where that champion isn't tested. Stop. Speaking. Out of your ass.

Banrates artificially deflating winrates has been commonly observed phenomena since stat tracking websites have been around. The infamous 97% kassidin was at a 50% winrate despite how busted he was. Lee sin had fallen to mid 40’s at times during season 3-4 despite being a top 3 jungled because his pick+ban rate got obscene. Akali is one of the strongest champions on the current patch and sitting sub 50 in most elo brackets.

A champion’s winrate when they are a high pick/ban champion simply is not an accurate measure of that champion’s strength. This is because the games they are allowed through the ban phase does are not representative of an average game. While we do not know the outcome if the champion had a lower banrate, we simply cannot say it would be the same. The only thing we can go by is what is most likely to happen which is that the champion’s winrate is artificially being deflated by their high banrates.

Sure, Akali has a 64% ban rate. That means that the average game would not have her making it through the ban phase. Any game she is played is therefore cannot represent an average game.

Also keep in mind that lack definitive proof does not mean something is false. The entire field of statistics is based on probabilities and correlation in the absence of definitive causation. If you are going to use statistics such as win rates, ban rates, etc, you have to go in knowing that you are not dealing with definitives and instead looking at what is most likely.

When banrates are at 51+%, those numbers are obviously skewed. When they are at 49%, they are most likely skewed. When they are at 30%, they are likely but not definitively skewed. When they are at 20%, things get cloudy. Statistics are a sliding scale, not a definitive yes or no.

Provide evidence that the games where Akali is featured is somehow "not average" in comparison to any other game of League where you have Annie or Vel'Koz instead. Akali not being banned, then being picked, isn't evidence in and of itself that the game is somehow not normal.

So prove your claim.

Already did. The fact that she made it through the ban phase already shows it is not an average game because she is banned in an average game. That fact alone is enough whether or not you are willing to accept it.

By this logic, a game where Nunu and Willump are picked is, in and of itself, not an "average game" because he's rarely picked. Seeing how that doesn't hold, neither does your pseudo-science.

Obviously the Nunu games are not average. You yourself said in the opening post exceptions should be made for low pick rate champions such as Nunu. Why is that? Sample size is still 100k+ games so that isn’t the issue. However, we are always hesitant to judge champions with low pick rates. This is because the games they are picked in are abnormal. They are not representative of champion power in the same way as the games a more popular champion is picked. A champion with x% winrate and 1% pick rate is not judged in the same way as a champion with the same winrate and 15% pick rate.

The same concept applies to champions on the other side of the spectrum. You can’t say one is abnormal and the other is normal, they are both abnormal. The evidence is there, it is on you if you want to accept it.

Going to have to downvote this. Ban rate does have a massive effect on what the effective win rate should be if no bans exist. Mostly because people not banning said champion are playing a counter pick to the broken champion.

How strong a champion is should be based on win rate if playing against the generic lane opponent. The higher the ban rate that means the more winning match ups the banned champion has. Like if 1 champion hard counters a broken champion and the broken champion is banned 95% of the time but only has a 30% win rate because the only time the broken champion gets through is when the enemy team plans on picking his only hard counter, the broken champion is still way overpowered even with a horrible win rate.

A 50% ban rate by itself heavily implies the champion is overpowered no matter what its win rate is. That means the lower bound for its effective win rate is already a base line 50% since it has winning match up against 50% of the meta pool. Given that we don't have enough bans and people will take a slightly negative match up to ban out another overpowered champion, it's probably winning against 80-90% of the meta pool, highly overpowered.

A high ban rate with a positive win rate is highly concerning, it means the champion is still winning against its worst match ups.

Anyways ban rate is probably a more accurate indicator than win rate when it is high since at that point ban rate obscures the effective winning rate. Win rates only matter when the ban rate is low.

However I will agree that a high pick rate with an average win rate means jack shit. It means against the generic meta pool, it's performing average, which is fine.

This is entirely false. Yasuo has a negative win rate rn and he's one of the highest ban rate champs in every elo. By your logic, he'd have a good deal of winning match-ups or comfy match-ups whenever he makes it through.

Like if 1 champion hard counters a broken champion and the broken champion is banned 95% of the time but only has a 30% win rate because the only time the broken champion gets through is when the enemy team plans on picking his only hard counter, the broken champion is still way overpowered even with a horrible win rate.

You have no grounds to assume what anyone is going to play in any solo queue match until the match is played for you to make this point.

If I ban Yasuo, and then play something in the jg, what does that have to do with lane counters? I could play something like Nami, but ban something that isn't even in my lane. You can't make the claim as to why anyone bans anything, or what that meas beyond "I don't want to play against it." You can make the correlation, but you can't make the conclusion.

A 50% ban rate by itself heavily implies the champion is overpowered no matter what its win rate is.

Blatantly false.

That means the lower bound for its effective win rate is already a base line 50% since it has winning match up against 50% of the meta pool.

Winning lane =/= winning the game. Pantheon beats nearly any lane in top lane, but there's reasons why we don't think he's all that good, and it's "every single phase after early game". The game is balanced around more factors than just early laning.

Given that we don't have enough bans and people will take a slightly negative match up to ban out another overpowered champion, it's probably winning against 80-90% of the meta pool, highly overpowered.

You. Can't. Assume. Why. Any. Individual. Bans. Anything.

What is the issue with you guys trying to prove something that you can't test?

“They hated him because he spoke the truth.”

Pretty sure this isn’t the first time I’ve commented on something you wrote with this exact sentence xd

Ban rate is not a good indicator of any single thing because of how many possible reasons there are to ban something, except how much people don’t want to play against that champion (which is very general).

If you want to determine how a champion is performing overall, at the bare minimum one should consider win rate, pick rate, and MMR. Other factors could include counters (both ways), region, and rune/build variance (like standard vs Glacial Ahri).

Win rates are your reality

there are many other factors other than that, but i get your point

chipndip12 votes

Thanks because I already wrote a massive dissertation and some people are still banging their heads on the wall.

wildfox9T1 votes

yeah, after writing a wall of text about how you should consider the stats you write that win rate reflect the reality without considering the other stats

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

win rate does not represent the reality, but an approximation/side of it,as much as bann rate and other things do

Even in a thread not directly about Akali, you turn it into shilling for her... Just give it a break, people hate Akali, get over it.

CIayman1 votes

Her lane kill rate averages at around 55 or 60%, sometimes getting as high as 70% in some matchups. But after laning, she just kinda does nothing. She does no damage to objectives, she has no wave clear, and she has no CC.

Her ban rate is because of her laning phase

Likewise, Yasuo's ban rate is so high because of his PD power spike. People just... don't like it, I suppose.

Also, both champions' ban rates are increased by the fact that nobody wants one on their team

Ban Rate + Pick Rate = Interaction Rate

chipndip11 votes

That doesn't even make sense. Most champs you guys complain about are HIGHLY interactive with their opponent. That very interaction is what people dislike, since it puts mental stress into the situation (actually having to focus on the match-up instead of just farming/actually having to plan around their defensive abilities instead of just dropping your skills on them).

JeaneGreene2 votes

Interaction Rate: How often a champion is considered being played, or would be played. Effectively a good judge of how popular any one champion is. If a champion has a low Interaction rate, that either means that they are fair or underperforming/Kinda fun or boring

Limrick1 votes

The irony of a support only player claiming champs like Akali are highly interactive. You don't even see her until later in the game, while playing the class designed to cuck assassins in general. Go play nothing but top/mid for a week and come back and tell us how "highly interactive" Akali Irelia etc are.

chipndip12 votes
  1. Already did. I have a smurf account I play top/mid on (mainly top nowadays). Opinion unchanged. Out of the few times I got to lane against her (I think 4 times now since she's banned so damn much), I never lost those games. Two times top, two times mid.

  2. Nothing you said combats the notion that, if anything, I should be the one upset about how strong Akali is over any of you responders. She's garbage in Bronze, garbage in Silver, and garbage in Gold. Only highly dedicated and highly skilled players get mileage on this champion.

  3. Me being a support main doesn't discredit anything I said. That's as low as me saying you being a Silver player with a negative win rate just negates anything you say on these boards. Don't be that guy.

Limrick1 votes

Lol okay, prove it. You being a support player means a lot, you don't lane against Akali, which is where 90% of the complaints about her come from.

chipndip12 votes

You're derailing the thread into if I personally play against a specific champ. Is it REALLY that important that you need to comb through my smurf's match history just to be satisfied on this side point so you don't keep shifting focus from the main point? Is it THAT important to you?

Limrick1 votes

How is it derailing? If you never play against a certain champ, your opinion on them means nothing. Also the fact that you can type multiple sentences sounding indignant but not a single word for your supposed smurf's username kinda implies you're lying.

chipndip12 votes
  1. I told you I've played against Akali. If you don't believe me, that's on you, not me.

  2. This thread isn't about one particular champ. You making it about one specific champ is derailing from the point of the thread.

And most of the time, people will fling around win rates and no one cares because everyone's halfway skeptical about them

actually i see the opposite, people usually can't make any argument different from the "nerf X champion Y% win rate"

Ban rates should probably be reserved for other types of commentary, because they aren't a statement on the strength of a champ in the first place. Maybe you can say something like "Everyone hates this champ, see!?!?!?", but that doesn't make that champ good or not good more than it makes them annoying.

if after a patch or after they find a new build/playstyle the champion bann rate massively increase or decrease it can be a sign that it become either too weak or too strong, especially if we are talking about high elo stats

sure not enough for telling it for sure (like also WR or pick rate taken alone) but you can't say it have nothing to do with the champion strength

Xavanic3 votes

While in some cases i can agree that their misusing a rate, sometimes combined rates also tell a different story, look at kai sa, people kept telling me she was balanced with her 50.8% win rate a week ago...which if she had an average pick rate fine......but she had a 40% PICK RATE, when her pick rate was that high, a 51% win rate is VERY HIGH since she was the top most picked adc in the game and on top of that still winning over half of her games Rates can be useful for determining when a champs strong or not, but only based on all their rates, not just said win rate

chipndip15 votes

You SHOULD combine the rates. I'm advocating for people to properly utilize these tools. What you did by looking at her general win rate and pick rate together to reach a conclusion was good.

Sometimes that can't be justified though....what if let's say zilean mid lane, has only a 0.5% pick rate, but his win rate is over 55%, then there's something wrong with the champ

chipndip11 votes

Yeah, he's not fun to play as for most people, and it isn't because hes weak. Simple enough.

True, but this is the main problem with using all the rates, look at sona after her mini rework, she had a 4% pick rate BUT, a 60% WIN RATE, while supports like thresh and blitz still outclassed her win rate, it was clear she was borked

You cannot assume anything with a low pick rate and even a 60% win rate without looking at the ban rate. Even in that case it can still mean the champion is underpowered.

  1. It can just mean the champion is a hard counter to a small set of champions but underperforms against everybody else, and the champion is only picked as a hard counter. Overall the champion can be considered underpowered but I would call it a niche pick.
  2. If the champion is just picked whenever and truly has a 60% win rate, it's play rate and subsequently its ban rate will increase. At this point you can safely say the champion is overpowered when its ban rate is increasing.

People play to win this game, not play what's fun, otherwise people wouldn't be so toxic about losing games. People will also ban out champions that are overpowered and win games if not banned. Irelia, akali, yasuo are all overpowered. High ban rate in solo queue. Even sometimes picked in pro settings where they value team utility much more and those are definitely not team based champions.

Frog goes moo3 votes

A champion's winrate is only relative to how healthy it is for the game. Hence why champions like azir and ryze and zoe get nerfs at 44 percent winrate and pyke gets buffed even at a 50 percent winrate. Take winrate with a grain of salt. It's better to look at damage dealt, CC score and other statistics. Even a champion like leblanc has under a 50 percent winrate but is toxic for the game because she's almost ungankable and forces another solo queue player to rely on their teamates to win their lanes while they safe farm.

Now just because she's under a 50 percent winrate throughout all her elo doesn't make her underpowered. Absolutely not. You have to take the champion and kit as a whole. Stats are ambiguous and flip flop. Especially if a champion is harder to use than another. Ryze will always and should always be at a 42 -44 percent winrate. If you see him at 47 or 48 percent, there's definitely something strange going on, doesn't mean he's over powered but definitely something strange.
