New Galio — Support Potential?

Alright, so, I'm sure my fellow support mains might be wondering or thinking the same thing, so let's have a discussion. 3/4 of new Galio's abilities have hard CC. Do we think this guy would potentially be a good support — not just a supportive top laner — I mean an actual support?

Could Galio's magic shield, hard cc, and his unique ranged ability (Abilities? If you count the taunt?) be the answer to a lot of oppressive supports (like Zyra, Karma, Malzahar) denying tanks in the bot lane? I've read up on the abilities, and I believe his W and R gives him the shield. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've been constantly on the lookout to see if a new champion that comes out or one that's been updated has potential to be a support, since our last actual support that was intended to be a support was Bard. Otherwise, Tahm Kench was the last (unintentional) support we've gotten.

Old Galio was a god tier support if you took the time to learn him. This update is probably going to nerf his supporting capabilities, but it's still definitely there, especially if his mana is not as trash as it used to be.

On my first read of new galio, I prefered old galio as a support (and indeed got my S rank chest with galio support pretty early in the season just out of concern that updated galio would be worse).

I'll reserve judgement until I actually play him as a support once he's released.

edit: I do feel he's probably a better solo laner now though, and neither version was/is exactly intended as a support so this support discussion is kindof an aside to whether new galio is better or worse than old glaio.

Same Old GD...garbage champ gets reworked, everyone cries the old version was better. Exactly zero people believe you.

He really isn't a support now, they basically took him and changes him to a Fighter Tank from a Mage Warden

That can only go Mid, or be useful against magic top laners.

Mages will hate him, like they used to hate Kass.

I'd have to read the passive but it looks like you could jungle the new kit if it applies to monsters. If so, I'd guess Jungling is his new domain as that ult will obliterate lanes depending on how obvious it's cast animation is. Even his charge/lunge forward ability will give him closing potential on ganks. And an AOE taunt that locks down an adc bot lane is good night if they don't flash out in time.

The only problem with that taunt is that he has no counter measures to it. Shen can dodge it, Rammus has an active Thornmail, but Galieo actually tanks it. He would need armour against a MF, Varus for certain (because Passive W) and Jhin.

Since marksmen are typically AD, I thought that the shield would be useless against them, and I am pretty sure that unless the shield comes back after not being hit for 5 seconds, which would be broken since his intent position is probably mid lane. The shields would be on too long of a cool down (or it better be-- again for mid lane) to be a use for dealing with Brand or Zyra; or it is broken in its scaling. A Q followed by a W could work but I he is more magic resistant and not amour, so again, Marksmen have to hard time against him.

Ashe can kite him, Vayne is.... Vayne, Ezreal can escape, Cait can lock him down, Jinx can lock him down, Draven can run away, Kalista can hop away, Graves and Lucian can dash away, Corki can fly away, Sivir likely can say screw him (her W or spell shield), Tristana would need good reaction time (Delay on her Rocket Jump)

So we have a magic shield-- Hey its Kassadin! A taunt-- Shen or Rammus, take your pick. A curved skill shot-- Twin Diana Q And a global get to an ally ult-- Hey Shen!

What is unique about this guy?

He would be a terrible support pick now, and frankly I'm extremely happy about that, both his E and his R are cancled by hard CC, meaning any support with a hook, root, stun, knock-up, or knock back counters him and every real support champion has one or two of these.

I believe Galio is a very strong pick atm for support. I only have about 15 games with the champ, all on support. His Q, deals sizable damage and is good harass. His E+W combo is very strong. His R is amazing against dive comps. You will have to master mana, timing, and your role but I currently prefer Galio to rakan in many ways. item 3302 >item 2049 >>item 3193 >>item 3143 . Absolutely give this champ a shot. I main supp and can tell you this guy has potential, plat V last season.
