@Riot, let's pool our efforts

(No, this is not a Vlad thread, despite the Punomancer's quote being the very title.)

Earlier this year Riot made a great call as they asked their very community about what makes Poppy and Taric unique and what should be transitioned into their upcoming relaunch. Lore, thematics, Identity, Visuals, everything was discussed; From Poppy's grumpy attitude to Taric's fabulous hair. It was met with a lot of positive feedback and never did we feel more like a part of this game when actively helping the designers bring out the best out of already established characters.

And yet we're presented with Mordekaiser, a champion whose roots run deep, being one of the first champions ever released, the subject of countless Brazilian memes and memories of his pre-nerf kit still haunting veteran player's nightmares. Despite being such an iconic champion and one who's potential hadn't even been properly tapped, a lot of his themes having the potential to make him as epic as can be if properly fleshed out, didn't get this kind of treatment.

And Riot was faced with the Mordekaiser fan base's whining and protesting against their rework. Was this rework rushed? Probably. Is it any good? debatable? Is it fitting for the Master of Metal? No, not really.

So where did Riot go wrong? It wasn't 100% their fault, his newer abilities actually being quite interesting, no. They simply didn't know how to pin down his Identity! So what makes him THE Mordekaiser? This is the question that should have been answered before any work was being done to him. It would have allowed Riot to expand on his core themes and identity rather than warp him into something only barely representing what he stood for.

So, what IF.... Riot were to hold one of these juicy threads where they pool all the ideas floating around their community and designer's heads while effectively pinning down Mordekaiser's Identity?

This would not only allow Morde to truly live up to his name and champion vision but also effectively help Riot to evaluate all the different facets of what makes Mordekaiser the Master of Metal. His identity and themes being the backbone to his rework rather than a gimpy gameplay mechanic. This would truly be marvelous and a great move on Riot's part to not only involve their community in an attempt to reimagine one of leagues' most iconic champions but also give him all the love he deserves!

it's a pretty simple list:

  • VU'd voice needs limitless metal references, both popular and obscure
  • lots of lightning/metal VFX, fuck this stupid green ghosty shit
  • low mobility, very limited or no CC in exchange for damage out the butt
  • always shield never die

certainlyt literally raised his middle finger to player's feedback and you expect riot to pool their efforts?

b negative, lol vlad's puns op

There are Designers that actually care about community feedback so hope isn't lost. Still, great pun indeed.

There are Designers that actually care about community feedback so hope isn't lost. Yet your conveniently placed pun just makes me want to upvote you.^^

I know, I was just saying that the guy who reworked morde didn't care about player feedback and esplicitely said that. I remember a rioter who answered every thread on first page, who was that? Riot something, he was really kind Anyway your idea should be done for every rework. see what happened to cass

Thought they had learned their lesson with Cass :/ Still, this kind of procedure would really help both Riot and their Community. It strengthens the bond between the company and the players as well as make reworking these champions less prone to failure in a thematic sense^^

Hello Malicious, nice to see you again!

I worked on a proposition for changes to Mordekaiser, because I think I see what Riot 'sees' that makes Mordekaiser unhealthy outside of the poke lane.

proposition link

I want to see a world where Mordekaiser can go top, mid, bottom, or even as the jungler. And I believe it is certainly possible, but with Mordekaiser the way he is, all Riot is going to do is nerf him, rather than make meaningful changes to preserve his core identity. You know... like what happened with him in the past pre-rework where he was good, then nerfed until he was lackluster, and kept in that state because they didn't know how to balance him to promote him the way he should be.

Likewise!

By the way, I like the direction your rework's going with Morde, it fits him better than the current one that's for sure. It would be SO GOOD to actually see all the things we Morde mains would come up with, heck, even those who didn't play Morde before may be able to contribute to a great discussion! Riot, pls!

I was thinking of having the damage-distance modifier I suggested for Siphon of Destruction to be applied to Harvester of Sorrow/Creeping Death, as another way to balance out Mordekaiser's power, since one of the reasons they nerfed the damage and heal on it was that it was too easy to get it off in the bot lane. They could balance it out so that it does as much damage and healing as it should, maybe a bit more like with Siphon in melee range, but you have to all-in more to reap the full benefits. Which again goes for the theme that to beat Mordekaiser, you have to constantly keep your distance, and to win as Mordekaiser, you have to keep on your enemies and never let up.

Bro. I'll ride my hog. Marching kinda not my thing, pizza feet and all.
Very dangerous over short distances. I'm wasted on cross country

Sauron was definitely a inspiration for Mordekaiser which is super bad ass

Count me in Malicious. I want answers, explanations, engagement with Riot on Mord. I'm tired of us being ignored.

Malicious Metal5 votes

Much appreciated! We must band together if we want to bring out the best in our dear Morde. Heck, Riot Repertoir told us himself that he doesn't think this rework would be enough for him in the long run and that they'll have to rework him AGAIN some time in the future. This is a joke, it's an official band aid rework.

Heck, a bit of engagement won't make them lose their face, in fact it would show us they care and actually make their job easier once they decide to give Mordekaiser another shot!

i would have preferred morde to have been reworked as completely and fully as sion, but you can't always get what you want.

hell, i must have been one of those crazy people that thought morde was fine as he was. but I guess champs just can't afford to be simple with clear strengths and weaknesses.

thought it was going to be a thread about the upcoming Poppy and Taric reworks...then turned into another thread about Mordekaiser..... -.- when will people move on?

The thumbnail should have been a dead giveaway on the contents of this thread :P And no, this is not only about Morde, it's about fixing a mess and opening up new avenues of community interaction/feedback.

Rather than the immobile burst deliverer tanky guys I envision Mordekaiser more as the ineluctable death so a slow moving guys with constant high damage (or ramping up damage) that won't jump instantly on you but can't be stopped (aka heavy CC resistence but slow moving and without high burst but more constant damage). Building tanky then will be a must because you have to endure in order to deliver fatal damage and not just do 2 AA and flash-->kill the enemy.
