Why Akali is ACTUALLY broken

pwc2016··25 votes·12,925 views

I see, "oh she has 4 dashes", oh she has too much damage, but you know what the real issue is? Her trading pattern.

Her trading pattern is too simple for a "high skill" champion. Akali is REALLY easy once you play a few games on her.

Most of your trade power comes from your Q, which is only gated by your energy and effectively has no cooldown. Q being on such low CD means you pretty much beat anything level 1. It's not hard to bully other assassins/midlane melee champs by just pressing Q, AA, Q, AA, which procs electrocute and deals probably half health. This is SUPER broken imo. She can pretty much just zone you off of 1 and half minion waves. it's pretty unfair, PLUS the tip of it slows, making it easier to hit enemies with autos because you slow an enemy down, and speed yourself up. It's really the dumbest part of her kit imo.

Her W is something that I think is problematic in that it makes it easier to trade advantageously. You literally CANNOT trade with her while she's in her W.

Her E is pretty fair. It's a short dash back that she can use to dash to an enemy or dash to a safer spot if she uses shroud. I think that you shouldn't be able to dash back to shroud though, but that's it. I think this is a pretty decent ability, and the only "broken" part is dashing back to a safer location at no cost.

R is fine. It's pure damage, the first proc deals almost no damage, and the second proc is only up 2.5 seconds after the first. I think it's a fair ability on a too-long CD.

I think the issue is that, as many have said, Akali has total control over the lane. She controls when/how you trade with her W. Her Q lets her trade very effectively, and with W she just doesn't let you trade back which feels to oppressive. E and R are generally fine.

I'd actually like to see W get obscurity back but less damage on her spells. I think the issue is that W is still problematic because it prevents in lane trading. They pretty much "nerfed" W to buff her damage, but that didn't solve her oppressive trade pattern and just made it worse for her opponent. I think taking away some damage and giving obscurity back to W would be good.

i also think (and this might be controversial), that her Q should have healing on it when she has 180+ energy. To me, this wasn't much of an issue. This is actually a plus for both parties imo, because if she wants health back in mid lane, she'll have to Q, so you'll know she'll only have energy for one more Q. Right now, she'll pretty much have both Q's up and ready at any point. Giving back her heal would give her a bit better laning for both parties.

The reason is she has no counterplay. It just simple. You can't play around Akali's kit.

But she can definitely play around yours. What pisses me off is that as an immobile melee juggernaut like darius, she literally just harasses and out manouvres and if she doesn't kill me with that, I go oom before I can harass her enough and I can't keep her to a dam fight, but she is free to engage, disengage, or juke me, at will. Literally darius's only purpose is all-inning and extending trades. He doesn't have target priority to kill adcs, mages, etc. Why the fuck is an early game champ like him so easy for that akali, a hypermobile assassin, to out trade in lane? But a fucken disaster of a champ akali is. I have no problem that darius has lots of weaknesses, but dam he should at least be beating the piss out of mostly melee range assassins. Such garbage.

Play anyone with aoe... Play kat, play LeBlanc, play Lux.

They will all, played properly, shit on Akali unless she's hyper fed.

Kat? Akali actually wins that lane fairly sizably if she's even half decent.

Ornn has been out 2 years, 2 months, and 22 days as of today, and he still only has one other skin from his base skin.

Kai'Sa has gotten 5 skins during that duration. Lux has gotten 2 skins during that duration. Akali has gotten 4 skins during that duration. Yasuo has gottne 3 skins during that duration. Riven has gotten 2 skins during that duration. Ezreal 2 skins Master Yi 2 skins Xayah 3 skins Jinx 3 skins

And I've not even touched the chromas.

Honestly Camille is the real Bruiser Assasin Hybrid and not Irelia.

You can say, that she is IRELIAvant.

I agree with most things in this post, but she's not really easy to play. It's really difficult to get used to Q auto Q especially against ranged champions.

Mechanical skill floor isn't really a valid form of difficulty. Just because correct execution is hard to do doesn't mean it should be unbeatable. We're playing league of legends, not typeracer.

Maybe you're just naturally good at it then, it was pretty hard for me to get used to when I started playing her and I sometimes fail at doing it consistently.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me wonder what exactly going on in Riot's testing/greenlighting process. Day 1 I went into a custom with Akali and saw that and immediately thought "that's stupid, it has literally no downtime and the speed boost is as long as the cooldown". How does nobody at Riot see that and think "Yeah, this seems like it'll be reasonable."

Same question applies to a lot of their recent releases. I'm starting to think they test things in too controlled of an environment.

I've been playing Bukkaki long before the rework, and I've played plenty of her rework on multiple accounts. Here's what I've come to think about it 1)original akali was broken. Unlimited dashes on kills and no one really played her enough until right before her mini rework 2)mini rework gutted her and made her essentially a single cat lady 3)full rework originally releases was ultra broken and was a lot of fun. Needed some nerfs 4)akali now is pretty strong early on mid and top lane, but is readily countered with AoE. When her shroud is on cooldown, shes very vulnerable, being squishy and not having her healing on her q or mini stun on her ult anymore. It's pretty easy to kill her after she uses her abilities, especially with a Darius or other mid to high health champion. Late game, I cant kill Darius, renekton, nasus, etc. Late game she dies pretty damn quickly without having a profound effect on team fights, and I'm talking proper team fights, not catching someone out at 36 minutes into the game. One akali in a recent game had 4 kills by 4 minutes and she was stomping us until 20 minutes in, where she couldnt live long enough to do anything, especially with laye game targeting of her

tl;dr people dont know how to play against her. If she uses 1 a and doesnt get the AA, and she uses her shroud, wait it out and stomp her face if she isnt near her turret or something. It's really not that hard to counter pick her.

Inc downvotes but whatever. I've played her quite a lot before and after rework and I know what shes good against and what shes bad against. If she Qs you and misses the AA, or misses the Q, shes not going to have enough energy to kill you after using her shroud and possibly 1 more Q. This is how you kill her early game. Dont get hit by the AA or out damage ger with zed or yasuo

Vezeuse2 votes

So her counterplay in lane is just wait for her to mess up? Juking her Q is only a viable option against newer Akali players that aren't accustomed to the range on her Q yet. If the Akali player knows the range, then it's not even worth it to try and juke it, you're delegated to just staying out of the range. Also, how exactly does she 'miss' an auto attack? This is literally out of your control entirely. Moreover, her Q will slow you upon getting hit on the edge of it as well has her passive giving her a movement speed boost when walking away from you (to proc her enhanced auto attack) and then another movement speed boost whilst walking towards you. So outrunning isn't an option either.

Akali has 1 issue. She was reworked. Look, she'd be balanced if W didn't restore damm energy. It would be balanced even with Obscurity (many assassins can tower dive) if W would cost energy...

PhantomGG2 votes

How I would change Akali as is

Q: Change it to charges, cause as is it's basically a charge ability with a two second c ooldown between each charge. 2 Charges, where their is a two second cooldown after using the q, but a new charge takes 10 seconds to reload

In doing this, you get to keep your strong early game against melles, but AN ACTUAL punishment window is created here where if she misses she will be highly punished, AND at the same time, the opponent now has ago in opportunity.

At the same time in doing this this will force akali players to use W and E more defensively. The pattern will go like this in a realistic scenario

Akali: Misses both qs enemy: GOT YOU NOW Akali: crap -uses W or e- Now can't play offensively at all for a good 10 seconds as many abilities are now down.

A big issue with Akali, that makes her W feel so oppressive, is the Akali player gets to basically EXCLUSIVELY use it offensively in lane despite it being a defensive ability. So in all actuality her main trading pattern as is, is this.

Q/Auto/W/ Q Auto/ Q Auto, maybe a E somewhere in the middle

So First off turn Akalis Q into a charge with a proper cooldown like Velkoz

This may make it to the point where W no longer needs to be touched, for it means, Akali will have to use her W more defensively in lane.

next off

E: Get rid of the unlimited fucking range, just make it the exact same as lee sins Q, for they are virtually the same ability.

R: Honestly get rid of first R, Adds way to much safety for akali

Things I might also consider

removing the flip on E1

Maybe make W smaller

Aeolus20002 votes

I think if q cooldown was a bit longer(like 2 seconds) it would be pretty fair, after all akali BEFORE rework used to q-aa for big part of her damage before level six so...

How do you lose to Akali being a Darius abuser?

Mihalikb2 votes

Because Akali shits on Darius from orbit. Akali shits on basically everything melee, even on Fiora, who can practically auto attack to death anything, but Akali, cuz you know it's hard to hit something that is either invisible, has flow from the middle of the lane all the way back behind her tower or is actually able to outrun Fiora, something basically no else can do.

Try to face Mordekaiser as Akali then, because Mordekaiser is far more superior in sustain, damage etc, Morde can go full MR and still gonna deal as much dmg as Akali.

miightofdemacia2 votes

My biggest problem I've always had about akali even before the rework is her healing. Not only does she not have to manage mana because she just uses energy so in theory she can stay in lane spamming spells once in a while forever, but she has sustain so even if you beat her down, she will heal up under tower anyway. If you combine the fact that you can't go ape shit on her because you have to be afraid of her retaliation insanely high burst damage but also the fact that she has good escape tools then it just seems like she has too much.

She has fail safe escape because she has a dash that can turn into another dash, she has a dash+stun, and if she wastes all this she can just shroud and get away anyway. And if she manages to escape, she can easily just heal up with her free healing. If you chase her she can turn around and hit you extremely hard and most times killing you unless you are a juggernaut who can take her hits and kill her before she kills you.

Countless of times i face noob akalis who miss everything like her kunais that she is spamming every 5-10 seconds and her dash shuriken but keep trying to go ape shit on me. Anytime i fight back, they just get away free by plopping shroud or using her basic ability to dash away if they didnt use it aggressively. They will always have one escape up ready because they will just keep spamming one or two spells and save one to escape.

She just seems really forgiving to play in my opinion but she isn't the only one. I think she would be more fair to play against if you remove her healing or tone down her stealth and dashes, but considering she is a ninja assassin, its probably better to remove her healing so she can keep the ninja theme with her shroud and dashes. Removing the heal won't take away from her being a ninja or assassin and will make her a lot more fair to play considering she doesn't use mana and uses energy which makes her able to spam.

oh i did not know they removed her sustain. Good choice considering she still has a lot of escapes now more than before. Kind of ridiculous. But this means i can play around her lack of sustain until she has gunblade.

Just play heavy CC/ AOE champs or point-click champs. She's not that effing hard to deal with! She's useless in team fights where the enemy has a crap ton of CC. If she still beat you (because she clearly doesn't have the skill or smart teammates) you need to play more or learn her to grasp her weakness. Let's learn Galio 1st and then we go from there.[slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

Yeah I can agree with this. I don't think the problem is her damage (high though it may be) but rather her ability to deal damage. You can have all the sheet dps in the world but it doesn't matter if you can't get it off. There's a reason nobody played Cassiopeia until they slapped 1800 QoL buffs on her. Having her stop after every E cast made kiting a nightmare.

She has all the control, she decides when and where the fights are. I can handle strong engage tools like Malph R. It's when a champ like Akali goes in, then plays mind games with her shroud, waiting and repositioning while in stealth to get the perfect Q for a slow to hit her next skill. It's exactly what people hate about fighting yasuo, Kai'sa, and Vayne. You feel like you're up against this wall and it's up to the player behind the champ to make the mistake that will get them killed. It hardly feels like you outplay them.

VelvetCrotch1 votes

many champs are broken with that wording. i think akali is in a quite good spot right now - and that even i lose many games with her. i dont think the healing should come back on her q, but i would like to see a bigger range on her second ult cast and a better energy reg during in her shroud.
