Why did they remove clarity and mana pots, but keep mana on items?
Often mana on items feels like a wasted stat since it gets less and less valuable as the game goes on.

If you really think that mana on items becomes useless later in the game, then you haven't ever played
or any of the really really high mana hungry champions like
or you just don't want
to have a useful passive.
Because Riot wants champions who actually have resource costs to be able to mitigate those costs.
You should understand, what with playing Nasus and having to deal with his E.

I would agree with you, except for the fact that I don't agree with you.
There are very few items that I would actually consider mana items, and those items are mostly built by mages.

The rest just kind of...have mana as a stat.
Some items with interesting effects have their cost efficiency balanced with the mana stat they provide
Mana often becomes almost worthless halfway through the game, as natural regen grows to cover any mana issues
