Real talk about high damage mage supports vs. classic supports

A commentary on the state of things, what with people hating mages being bot lane. Basically:

  • Idk about you guys, but the mages bring high bases. I don't think the traditional picks have bases that even compares to these guys at this point. Otherwise...wouldn't they be picked? How is this problem going to be solved? By buffing "traditional" supports or nerfing the guys that are in because traditional supports have lousy bases now, thus conceding that bot lane needs to be its own little sub-meta where we send champs with shitty early games?

  • Idk about you guys again, but this whole idea that supports can be meaningful and relevant in a game about beating up enemies to beat up structures...WITHOUT DAMAGE, is kind of ass-backwards. Some? Sure. Shit, almost any game with classes has some class that's primarily defensive...but we have that in spades in Janna and Soraka already. Like, I've tried conveying this in too many different ways now, but we'll never get anywhere trying to make every support into Janna and Soraka. It isn't happening. Some supports are meant to be a bit "more" on offense, but they don't build like it, they're not encouraged to act like it, and thus half the point of those champs fades away. The entire point of more defensive picks remains when there's nothing but defensive support items, and the entire point of these mages remain when they don't even need a fast build to rip your ass wide open, so they can take their time building their mid laner builds while killing you with the pieces of them. The only champs that suffer from this are the traditional supports people have been crying about, especially when their bases don't compare to the mages. Not ALL of them, but just the ones that don't cope well with being forced into this position. Morgana, Lulu, Zilean, Sona, and so forth. Ones that may have some defensive functions, but also value their offensive ones...but aren't encouraged to for some reason.

  • Honestly, I think the reason support's in a bad spot right now is because people don't want support to get in the way of everyone else's fun, but people ALSO want support to magically be fun enough to populate with players. Once again, in a pvp game, this is impossible, but man we sure tried! All the champs that were designed as supports have been shoehorned into shield/heal items...even when they don't have heals or shields. So now they're pushed into reactive, defensive items while half of them have moderate emphasis on play-making and offense. Meanwhile mage supports literally side step this problem because they just build into their mid lane builds.

All in all, I think a number of things should be done, but it'd probably take a class rework to even tackle half of it. Yes, I still think Locket and Redemption are horribly designed, broken items that need removal from the game. Also, classic supports need to be stronger at their base level if they aren't going to have affordable support items with ap on them, and tank supports might need a bit more to measure up in the lanes on top of that. Lastly, I think all this happening was a good thing. A very good thing, actually. It shows that classic support champs have been shoved into the ground way too hard for way too long, to the point where others can just do their jobs better with almost exclusive reliance on kill pressure. I say we use the current mages more as a baseline to push classic picks up to, rather than justifying the state of things by nerfing these mages out of the game entirely (I mean, they're only supporting because they don't mid that well anymore). That's what I think anyway.
