Nerf Zed

I hope that this placebo nerf you just gave him doesnt mean that he'll stay like this for any longer. The champ is beyond busted.

Plot twist 2, Nothing changed.

Ye nothing changed then why when i use my combo or r and combo with w the target is alive for 10 hp or 1 or 30 and gets away? yeah because its 30 damage less in the combo in total and 40-50 in R depends on qs hit.

Zed was shit in the highest elos before last patch and the patches before as well......he will always be shit up there unless insanely buffed.

His counterplay is being telegraphed which is a fatal weakness that no truly high level player will fail to abuse, his main way to get around this, roaming to attack others, only works if he can reliably get kills when roaming.

Which is much less likely to happen the higher the elo you look at.

Zed with his current kit can never be good in high elo, not without being pumped full of buffs like steroid injections.

Who Fed Ru2 votes

It's not really his kit, he actually has so many ways to use his kit, even in high elo and pro play he can heavily juke enemies.

It's more the way Lethality works and that you can make any Lethality user deal so much less damage with just one item, while their damage is broken when the enemy doesn't have one.

That wasn't an issue back when Zed did build item 3153 item 3071 item 3035 as his core items.

Back in Season 4 he was picked in pro play often without him being OP. And back then QSS removed Death Mark.

Thefrostyviking1 votes

Game has changed incredibly much since then, and even Faker said as much.

Far more defensive options exist, more counters to him among the champions and then just how things have evolved.

Like assassins losing most DPS and being entirely burst focused, many of them used to have more sustained options, zed with botrk for instance.

And if i recall then it was the view back then that once the marksmen hit 4-5 items and got mercurial against Zed then the game was over for him, for with one having that and the other target having zhonya he couldnt kill any carries and had to splitpush instead.

But he wasnt as good at splitting as Jax, fiora or .....Irelia even i think?

Tryndamere.

Even if riot removes the "lol i got this item you cant do anything" so that Zed can come forward more he´d still be terrible in high elo, just because being telegraphed means his combo can be read by anyone with sufficient skill. He also cant roam much up in that elo either so he´s helpless.

Furthermore a shift in damage from burst to DPS wouldnt do anything now, as a assassin he doesnt have the time to survive that long, hells even juggernauts and divers barely survive long enough.

And mindgames? Jukes? He isnt comparable to Akali or Kha6 at all, which is why they are good up there but he is not.

It's still not a problem with his kit, but where his kits power got shifted.

Also, it's not like other champions can get read less easily. A pro can read the combos of any champion as he has much experience.

It's all about finding engages even pros can't react to. If there are 5 champions in a teamfight even the most telegraphed kit can become a problem to handle.

Zed never had that much DPS (apart from the AS he got from blade, but he never made much attacks in a fight). What made him strong was that he once was one of the most mobile champions out there, but nowadays everything has a minimum of 3 dashes while his mobility was heavily restricted so he isn't anymore. The W buff felt fine, like really fine because he needed exactly that. 22 seconds is just BS and also big part of the reason why he can get denied so easily in high elo. I don't understand why these idiots at Riot reverted that part of the buff when it's fine that everyone else has 10 sec CD mobility spells in their kits. His damage is one thing, but at least don't restrict his mobility that heavily.

And if i recall then it was the view back then that once the marksmen hit 4-5 items and got mercurial against Zed then the game was over for him, >for with one having that and the other target having zhonya he couldnt kill any carries and had to splitpush instead.

Just like it should be. When late game comes, he should fall off heavily. But he should at least be able to easily win the early for that.

But he wasnt as good at splitting as Jax, fiora or .....Irelia even i think?

Tryndamere.

Sure but he shouldn't be, as those champions are late game carries, and Zed is not and should never be.

Even if riot removes the "lol i got this item you cant do anything" so that Zed can come forward more he´d still be terrible in high elo, just because >being telegraphed means his combo can be read by anyone with sufficient skill. He also cant roam much up in that elo either so he´s helpless.

Like I already said, every champ can easily be read by any high elo player when he is alone. You can't tell me that Zed is more easy to read than let's say Velkoz who also gets picked a lot frequently.

He can't roam because he can't manage the wave correctly when his W has what feels like Ult CD. It was way more easy to find roams when his W had lower CD. Now he is an Assassin that can easily be denied his roams, and therefore useless.

And mindgames? Jukes? He isnt comparable to Akali or Kha6 at all, which is why they are good up there but he is not.

Akali ok because she jumps around like r%%%%%ed and has her W, but Kha? Stylish jukes a lot of people in high elo, and there are far, far less complex champions also seen in pro play and high elo. Hell even Heimer is there now.

I just think that the champions kit is fine like it is, but Riot has no idea how to balance it (as usual).

First I would suggest reworking Lethality into something completely else. Then, idc how they balance him else, but 22sec W CD is a no go. He won't see any pro play with that and feels like shit to use. It happens in soloQ and it is even more important in high elo play that you can react to small skirmishes that randomly break out, for example in junngle when s1 counterjungles. But that is simply not possible when you are either pushed in and can't react or you have prio but used your W for it and that is now gone for a while so you are no threat to anything.

Kind of ended up being a wall of text xd, but I really want to see that champion into a spot again where he is viable without feeling bullshitty to enemies. The game has changed a lot, but I don't think his kit is outdated or too telegraphed, just wrongly balanced.

And it had to be shifted, DPS assassin does not work.

Also, it's not like other champions can get read less easily. A pro can read the combos of any champion as he has much experience.

Yes thats true, you can to a degree guess what anyone will do with sufficient experience, however its a question of being able to do anything about it.

And unfortunately for Zed his enemies have plenty of options, due to his ult being the way it is.

It's all about finding engages even pros can't react to. If there are 5 champions in a teamfight even the most telegraphed kit can become a problem to handle.

Not really, because all 5 will not be a threat to the backline, rather usually its only zed and maybe one more than dives in.

Zed never had that much DPS (apart from the AS he got from blade, but he never made much attacks in a fight). What made him strong was that he once was one of the most mobile champions out there, but nowadays everything has a minimum of 3 dashes while his mobility was heavily restricted so he isn't anymore.

What made him strong was the ability to spank almost anyone 1v1 until they got the "lol no" items, or kill any marksman whenever he felt like it pre mercurial.

Those times have changed greatly, phantom dancer, overheal, resolve, more defensive abilities like Xayah R and whatever else that just dumpsters him.

Problem is that Zed with a lower W cooldown still cant fight those who can punish him for engaging on him, instead he just shoves the wave hard then goes roaming and the formula of "can i snowball mid or kill enemy botlane to win" once again applies.

Just like it should be. When late game comes, he should fall off heavily. But he should at least be able to easily win the early for that.

Becoming a cold pile of crap just because he couldnt end quickly enough or his enemy had enough build diversity to get his counter item early feels like a pretty shitty situation.

Like I already said, every champ can easily be read by any high elo player when he is alone. You can't tell me that Zed is more easy to read than let's say Velkoz who also gets picked a lot frequently.

You cant compare a mage to a assassin, because a mage functions mainly in teamfights.

Their job will be to unload either on the engaging enemy tank or as followup for their own engaging tank while also providing poke from a high distance, doesnt matter if the enemy knows what´s going on if they have 0 options for doing anything about it.

He can't roam because he can't manage the wave correctly when his W has what feels like Ult CD. It was way more easy to find roams when his W had lower CD.

And that is the problem, Morgana got nerfed for the exact same reason.

Use W, shove wave, go do whatever they want, avoid interaction with opponent who is difficult.

Now he is an Assassin that can easily be denied his roams, and therefore useless.

Was useless even before in high elo, because good botlaners will escape instantly when they hear that he is missing so he never got any good roams off unless he luckily found a vulnerable jungler.

Akali ok because she jumps around like r%%%%%ed and has her W, but Kha?

If he runs out of a bush+his R then he had 4 runs of invisibility to juke and run around you, and he can afford to wait out a zhonya.

Stylish jukes a lot of people in high elo, and there are far, far less complex champions also seen in pro play and high elo. Hell even Heimer is there now.

Comparing mages with assassins is pointless due to different jobs.

And Zed mains are ever so fond of saying that Zed is too weak and in need of help quoting stylish.

Even when the man had a good winrate and Zed had 55% in masters at the time.

Then, idc how they balance him else, but 22sec W CD is a no go.

It was just proven that he cant have less though, because he just shoves and roams which is oppressive and OP in lower elo but still useless in high elo.

He won't see any pro play with that and feels like shit to use.

Will never see proplay as he is now unless OP.

Problem with his W is that it is too powerful, it is long range harass+waveclear+mobility+damage booster all in one spell.

It wrecks his powerbudget so damn hard its not even funny.

Kind of ended up being a wall of text xd, but I really want to see that champion into a spot again where he is viable without feeling bullshitty to enemies.

I dont mind the textwalls but i seriously dont think its ever possible for him to be generally "good" in high elo without feeling like a absolutely monster to everyone else.

The game has changed a lot, but I don't think his kit is outdated or too telegraphed, just wrongly balanced.

As long as he relies on that ult of his and roaming as his keys to success he can never be good, pro´s can easily deal with both of those and Riot are enforcing a ban on abilities and setups that let a champion avoid interaction and just farm.

Morgana and Lissandra were both his for those.

Morgana and Lissandra were both his for those.

I can see your points, but I don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be. The game hasn't changed that much, and he once was a contested pick without being OP. There were always ways to deny him, and imo QSS was the worst one, worse than anything that exists now. Mostly it's just that some items got stronger, some got weaker and some were added, but a little bit polishing could put him into a fine place again.

And I don't think Morgana and Lissadra are good examples because you just want to survive lane with them without interacting with the opponent, while as Zed you want exactly that interaction. The biggest problem I see people having with him is that he claps you on lane, and not that he doesn't interact with you. The frustration against him comes from that, and not from his roams usually. And it should always be a team effort to get some wards deep in the River if the enemies have an Assassin so you can react to his roams if he tries them.

It's not comparable to Morg and Liss as they don't want to roam but just farm early without wanting to interact with anything early, and just want to scale, and it became a problem because you couldn't punish them. An Assassin who looks for interaction, either on lane or by roaming is not comparable to that.

A lower W CD would be fine, I mean, he is an Assassin, he should have the tools to roam and react to skirmishes early. For that, he should pay with an absolute shit late game.

I think it's not a problem or feels shitty that you are useless once a certain point in the game has passed. You had your strong early and mid to make things happen. Ofc there still should be some things you should be able to do, but these are minimal. A late game Zed shouldn't be much of a threat anymore, but a early game Zed should make things happen, that's why I think a lower W CD is fine.

Also, I don't really agree that pros have ways to easily deal with roaming. In pro play, it's all about the efforts of clearing and setting up vision and then going for an eventual roam or 4 man gank. If they have no vision, they would have to leave CS everytime the enemy could gank them, and they can't afford that.

It happens very often in pro play that someone was overextended and ganked by the enemy mid and jng simply because he didn't catch him leaving the lane or taking the risk because the enemy team did set it up correctly. It's all about the mid laner having the tools to do so, and Zed should be an excellent roamer early.

So I'm completely fine with him having a horrible late if he has an excellent early for it, it's as an Assassin should be, and as how his kit functions, the imo correct way to balance him. He should work in the way that he has an strong early and tools to make things happen to set up for a good mid game before heavily falling off, but if he fails to make anything happen or fucks up he should have a way harder mid game that he would have to play extremely well to become a factor again, or else be out of the game from that point.

I believe in general that giving champions clear time windows in the game when they are a heavy threat and when they aren't is a good way of balance, as you know exactly as an enemy where you should have your priorities at a certain point of the game.

To add on that, a fatal mistake on Zed was adding that Ult passive that turned him into a late game carry, and keeping it like that for 2 and a half years. His late is now way weaker again, but I believe that many people still have in mind that he is still very strong late game, which he isn't anymore as he lost like 50 AD. But from experience over the last 2 years you now think that that is the case and he will fuck you up late. It needs a few patches to adapt to that again. It even needed a few games for me on him to reconsider his power spikes as it felt entirely different again, and I guess this process will be much slower when you just play against him, especially when he was banned in every second game.

The problem was that the change came suddenly, even if he once was exactly like now. An early game carry with a shit late, like he should be.

So I think letting people adapt to the power shift is the best action to take for now, but sooner or later he needs to be put into a decent spot again without overbuffing him, but giving him that strong early game.

Thefrostyviking1 votes

Of course there are people frustrated by getting clapped but you can safely ignore them, thats a matter of skill entirely.

The problem is how that happens, and many complain that while safe has high pressure he is also very safe, thanks to his W and ability to farm at least a bit with his Q.

His roaming? That is only threatening if there is no warning or his targets fail to react, a lower elo issue mainly.

And the reason i compare Zed to morg&liss is because he actually plays extremely like them when he feels its unfavorable to him.

Stays really far back in the lane, farms with Q, punishes any attempt at heavy harass with his W-Q-E.

You cant harass him and you cant even stop him from farming. This safe low interactive style is something many think an assassin should absolutely not have.

Then for the argument of power across a game and scaling, while i dont find the idea terrible the method to me seems bad if i understand it.

Return the ability to cleanse Zed R and use it as a reason to buff him? You realize item build paths have changed a ton since then?

Many marksmen can now get a mercurial as early as 2-3 items in instead of 4-5 and still be really good. Making Zed R cleanse-able but buffing the rest would just hurt him as his ult would be so extremely useless so very fast.

Heck even current Ashe can go botrk-hurricane-mercurial if she wants, or to crap on attackers, botrk-phantom-mercurial.

And the issue with Zed isnt that ult passive or whatever, its simple.

He is really, really, really damn strong when the enemy lacks tools to stonewall his ult, but he is really damn useless when they do.

This goes true for early, mid or lategame, in the current game those tools become more common later but some have them in their kits already, like Xayah R.

From my experience Zed can just go AFK against a good Xayah and a zhonya user on the enemy team+decent support. He will never accomplish anything.

Heck he can go afk if the enemy team has a lulu/janna/Alistar/blitz or a lot of other supports too, no outplaying instant hard CC+shields&heals.

So IMO Zed cant be buffed without losing something, but he has nothing he can actually afford to lose as he is now.

Thus he needs a rework, he needs a kit that isnt so super reliant on a ult that is actually easily countered if you put your mind to picking and building for it.

He needs a W that isnt like half his kit in itself, fine if it is a core ability but now when its his long range harass+mobility+range+combo damage booster all in one he is basically helpless when he doesnt have it.

His R cant be nerfed for its already too easily countered, his Q and E are not too much.

He cant actually lose anything from his W because its too core to his kit, hitting the passive would be pointless.

And from what i heard Zhonya is getting removed too.

And from what i heard Zhonya is getting removed too.

I never said that Qss should be able to cleanse his Ult again, what I meant is that it once was like that and he still was a contested pick without being broken, and imo that was worse than any counter that is bound in the kit or anything else that exists nowadays.

Also, he might not be able to kill a Xayah instantly, but he can Ult her first and then return to his Ult Shadow and follow up with his base combo and letting his team follow up. If he gets her to Ult without using any base abilities, that is a very good trade usually in a fight.

I think a good idea to rebalance him would be that the mark gets applied even if the enemy uses an untargetability spell, and then nerf the numbers. Against enemies without anything against him the Ult is often overkill anyway even if you don't get much damage on them, so, like you said, the issue is if you actually get it through or not. Things like Xayah Ult just feel unfair to the Zed player while it feels unfair to the enemy if they don't have tools like that.

So I'm suggesting making his Ult apply through untargetability, but nerf it's damage values. This would already fix much of that issue and would feel fairer to both the player and the enemy no matter if they have the tools to counter him or not.

Also, I wouldn't say that his W is too strong, because alone, his W is only good for mobility. He needs to use his complete combo to fully use his W, and usually is out of energy after that. So the W alone is only good for escaping.

And I don't see why you are against him being balanced around having his strong points early and falling off very hard. Kayle is basically the opposite of that, so that kind of balancing works. The only difference here when playing Zed is that you have to make something happen early because your champion falls off late, and when the enemies have Kayle you have to make something happen early because else you are getting destroyed by her.

Ah my bad on the season 4 state thing then, but indeed he was contested but not broken.

However i seriously believe that was made possible because the game was very different, he could fight and win against far more opponents 1v1 than he can now, particularly among the fighter class.

As for dealing with Xayah, as a rule of thumb he should never have a shot at going near her without using his W first which is the largest issue , even if he doesnt she still moves when ulting which wastes too much of his time denying the kill.

He cant afford to stick around the way an akali or Kha6 can after all.

However the thought of letting his mark apply instantly on his ult use removing the ability to dodge it in exchange for lower damage is interesting, but wont it still have the weakness of people just saving their barriers for it then?

Doesnt matter if it hits but doesnt deal sufficient damage, this change would just shifting who and what he is weak against.

I wouldnt say that the W is too strong on its own, but it has too much of Zed´s potential stuffed into it. It consumes far too much of his powerbudget which is why it has such a horrendous CD for a assassin mobility spell.

His Q and E have such short cooldowns anyway but they dont do much damage on their own so they are actually very "cheap" in that sense.

Kayle is a bad example, Riot themselves have recently started moving to nerf her and she will probably keep being nerfed for quite some time.

Because she is considered too strong.

And i think i figured what i think you should consider, you´d argue that its fine to Zed to have a hyper early for a crap late on the basis that it motivates the player to make things happen.....but this is a team game you know?

Zed alone cant be buffed to really do that much on his own, and if even one of his teammates fall behind and the other team drags out the match Zed just loses instantly because he couldnt end in time.

It would work if everyone played perfectly but it doesnt and becomes much too unreliable when they dont, Zed would be super oppressive when his team gets ahead but something like a tragic hero dragging it out a bit when losing but unable to overturn the tides.

I much more prefer a champ that has a decently strong early to midgame, perhaps even really strong midgame but still a goood enough lategame.

Doesnt have to be a Jax or current kayle wrecking people left and right, just being able to do solid contributions like killing exposes targets or burning important defences is good for an assassin at that point.

But not being able to do anything just because the game went 5 minutes too long or the wrong guy got 1-2 kills early would just be awful.

Even Pantheon can do things lategame if he´s careful.

When the enemies have a Xayah, I often find engages against her without my W. She has a pretty short range to compensate for her Ult, so it's actually quite easy to flank or find a engage with ghostblade and ult on her, that isn't the issue. With the right engage, you can find openings against short range ADCs that let you ult them in all elos. The problem is really that the Ult gets completely cleansed away from it, so you are only good for baiting it out.

He can't stick around like Kha or Akali do, but he doesn't need to because his kit works around his shadows, so he could Ult in, get back to the Ult Shadow, and go back in again with W. If only the mark would still be there..

And Kha can't exactly stick around as easily either. In a crowded teamfight, he can get 2 seconds of invisibility, and after that, he would get clapped if he goes for the same target again in pro play.

Then comes the thing with having to rely on your team and the outcome of the game being able to change by who got 1-2 kills early, but let's be honest, the game is like that and was always like that. There are so many factors that need to be considered. Teammates are always unreliable, and the outgame of the game can be heavily influenced by your teammates. And when they are losing, it's Zeds job to drag his team into late game. It's not like when Zed becomes useless his entire team lost. Maybe you just needed his early to get your Vayne into late game. Well ofc it could be that that Vayne player also won't carry in late because she is lacking skill, but in theory, you got your team into the late game, and you have a carry who should be strong now.

Kayle gets nerfed because she is too strong rn, but even before the rework she was that late game monster with a very bad early.

And I didn't mean that he should be literally useless late game, he should still be able to somehow split and pressure the map by pushing the waves, but I mean Pantheon levels of useless. Pant also can't do much on his own in late game anymore. He basically is just a dude with a point and click stun that he uses to lock down sb or peel his carry. Zeds late game job would be putting some pressure on the map and forcing enemies on the side lane even if it will be very hard for him to fight them.

Huh, well i suppose its a matter of experience, i do play Xayah from time to time but to be honest i dont see Zed much and the few times i do just blocking his R with mine left the poor sap completely empty.

Then it was just to position as usual and with my support around there is usually not much to threaten me while going around.

And kha6 with evolved R has 2 seconds invis per charge and has 3 charges, 6 full seconds of invisibility by my counting.

Then for Zed and a bad team, the problem is that when your lategame is keyed into enemy items so heavily then yes, feeding teammates will result in Zed becoming useless much quicker than he should with such a setup.

Lets say that Kaisa gets ninja tabi, phantom, cleanse/BT barrier and whatever else early because she got a 3-4 kills, how is Zed supposed to really threaten her?

Marksmen are basically scaling their game period with items, 0-2 items early- 3-4 midgame 5-6 lategame.

With this kind of system how could hyper early Zed possibly function if his enemy gets even slightly lucky?......well to be honest that problem exists now as well but he partially gets around it by having tons of damage against those who try to endure through it.

Except against mages and zhonya but that should be gone not too far from now.

Then for Kayle, did you actually play her? I did, she was one of my 3 toplaners.....well is to be correct.

She never really was a true hypercarry, because she had no max health damage, nor any true damage or sky high attackspeed or range.....all she had was resistance reduction but it was rarely enough.

She was a super powerful duelist to be sure with her ult, but she was not a damage carry, instead she was a ridiculously powerful splitpusher&helper for the real carry.

Riot solved this by actually adding in attackspeed, a execute, true damage and a funny AOE system into her new kit while keeping the shredd, which did make her a true carry..,....and too powerful later on.

Oh well i suppose its a difference of opinion, i feel Zed should be more like Akali&kha6 who have a few weak-ish early levels but quickly become very strong at 6 and maintain a powerful midgame but remain very much relevant even lategame.

He could even be remade as the AD counterpart to kassadin with a weak early, decently strong midgame but really powerful lategame, i think this could work as well although i believe in the first option more.

Sad thing is, Zed isnt broken because his stats are too high or his synergy is too good, rather its his kit that makes him so strong in soloq.

And its also his kit that makes him so weak in the truly high levels of play.

Honestly best advice i can give is to learn to learn to play against him so that you dont feed him then pray to god your team listens to your calls when he starts roaming when he cant kill you.

Likeliness of them listening and reacting properly scales with elo.

The big issue with zed is that ever since they removed being able to qss the mark, you can't really outplay him unless you can dodge the q's which I mean cause of the slow, is only really possible if the zed is brain dead or you have a dash/blink

Saezio2 votes

You play LB, just get double arm shards, rush seekers with a corrupting dark seal start get tabi and you will be gucci

Hot LeBlanc Yuri1 votes

If only it was that simple. If i build seekers first I wont have a efficient wave clear, I wont do enough damage, mana will be a problem and i cant even use my item 2033 well enough because i cant buy item 1082 . Compared to Zed who has amazing wave clear no matter what he buys first item 3134 or item 3155 . If he buys dirk and i buy seekers they pretty much negate each-other so he will be doing the same amounts of damage and I will be doing a lot less.

And being under tower vs Zed as LB is literally the worst position you can be in.

Zed is still hot garbage, saying otherwise just means you don't know how to play correctly yet. Scarra put it perfectly, to paraphrase: "Zed wasn't broken last patch, people just don't understand how to play against him. I (scarra) never have any problems playing against the champ. People don't realize that if you dodge a shuriken and he doesn't get electrocute that he's pretty much useless. Most mages can trade into Zed 2 or 3 times before his w is back up."

So does this also mean that people dont know how to play against Vayne or Riven?

The Chillin1 votes

Yes, 100%. I personally believe they are more overtuned though. Vayne especially. Riven, more so a product of conqueror, shojin, deathsdance being incredibly overpowered. I actually think the game could be fixed if shojin got its passive changed to 15%, deaths dance damage redux went to 20%, and guinsoos rageblade was removed (this could put more pure power into adcs and not break the game) or at least change phantom hit to ever other OTHER auto (every 3 autos get an onhit bonus)
