Riot's solutions to supports is one step forwards and two steps back.

The title might be a little confusing but lately I've really began to dislike playing support and don't get me wrong Riot has been trying their best to make support more fun to play and add new and interesting things to get other players to like the support role more but every time they add something new and interesting it seems like they do something to either mess it up or create an even less satisfying experience.

In season 6 Riot worked hard to make playing support more impactful and fun, adding Redemption and the updated Ardent Censer, two great additions to the game once they were balanced and great options for supports who up to that point had mainly relied on mage items.

Season 8 Riot seems to be working hard to make playing support a chore Each unique support item while usually each having their own unique strengths and limitations, now each item builds into a sight stone with the only difference being stats.

The new rune system heavily limits the options to support, literally every healing support uses Summon Aery while the majority of tank supports use Aftershock.

Finally the latest patch has changed the price of the support items to no longer allow supports to buy anything other than their required support item and a potion, compared to literally every other lane being able to buy nearly any starting item like any of the Doran's items, cloth armor, boots and a potion.

Now, this may not seem impactul but all of these changes take away a lot of the player's identify while they play, you follow the road set out for you and while it may seem like you get to choose what you do, you don't. I just don't get the satisfaction that I used to get as a support, every game just feel the same and I wish something was done about this because at this point I feel like the smallest player base in League is only going to get smaller until no one wants to play support anymore.

The support items cost nerf was necessary. Supports had too much sustain in lane, if they opted in the three potions start. It was the meta start, and sadly, it couldn't get nerfed in another way. How else could the combination of three pots+support item be removed?

  1. Support items makes you unable to buy more than 2 potions. Counterintuitive stuff, pretty bad solution
  2. Potions cost more. Nerfs other lanes without any reason, bad solution
  3. Potions heal for less. Nerfs other lanes without any reason, bad solution

The support item nerf was a necessary evil, to make role more open. It limits your first-buy choices, but it makes sustain weaker, and poke damage sticks more.

Also: Most of the supps can use Unsealed spellbook (mostly in pro play) Old runes and masteries didn't had any diversity either (enchanters were taking Windspeakers, Tank supps Stoneborn pact (???), Mage supports DFT or Thunderlords) Sightstone items got merged with the support items so supports could have more item diversity with one item-slot being free. Also, free item slots in support equipment come in handy, considering they have to buy mobis, support item, and a tons of control wards. Now supports instead of two slots for items like redemption or locket have three of them

Addressing the cost nerf~~ I would personally have preferred it if the item prevented you from buying 3 potions at the start of the game, It's a lazy solution but~~ Sire Hippington and Makimoke both bring good solutions to this problem that would work for Riot's issue with supports starting the game with 3 potions while still allowing supports to have a few more options like buying a Fae Charm, completely ignoring lane sustain and making yourself more susceptible to poke while being able to poke more and get a Forbidden Idol earlier in the game. Its a fair risk reward situations that unjustly got taken out of the game in my opinion.

Addressing the masteries compared to the new runes, while there was definitely a meta with the old mastery system, where you could play with nearly everything before, not picking the optimal runes will often feel like shooting yourself in the foot and while Runes like Unsealed Spellbook are used, like you said this is mainly done in pro play where there is a lot more synergy between the support and their team allowing for runes like this to be used easier.

Finally coming to the Sightstone merging, Supports already had the option to buy a sighstone version of their support item and while the merging does in a way open up a item slot, the game does not provide enough support items and instead the diversity will often be supports going back to mage items like they did pre-season 6 which is taking a step backwards in my eyes, We're losing out on three great support items to instead have an open slot that will be eventually filled by a mage item in most cases.

Wouldn't work that well. They'd just go refillable. Upping the price was a good idea but, 400 is too much.

375 would have been perfectly fine for this. Sure, some supp couldn't go reju beads/refillable with their favorite supp item, but at least you keep Fae Charm or 1 pot + 1 control.

yeah, I see what you mean. Both you and Sire Hippington brought a up a good point for a better solution so I'll edit my earlier respond. either way thank you for the feedback.

Nono refillable was fine. The problem was just 3 pot start.

Sadly refillable was a casualty of the price change.

Sire Hippington17 votes

pretty easy: they could have upped the price to 355, meaining you're just 5g short for tripple potion, but still have enough gold to either get a fairy charm instead of pots or get a controll ward+1pot If they now also reduced refliables cost to by 5, you'd even have that as option, and all of that without any noticeable impact on anything else in the game

Makimoke6 votes

As a support main, I can understand the change, BUT 400 is way too much. I already posted my thoughts as to why and how this could be fixed : The link in question

Sightstone items got a buff but also the shaft : Sightstone merging into item 3309 meant you lose the shield, it also meant you lose the item CDR plus health from the Ruby Sightstone if you ever built one, you also get later wards, waaaaay later.

So sure, you get a "free slot", for some cases, but at what cost? And now those items get even higher costs which limits playstyle to supp item + 2 pots? A bit too much if you ask me.

nobody ever fucking bought a second item with a support item stop this bullshit

nobody in pro build did it nobody in competitive did it no streamer did it what is this attempt of false information?

AirKingNeo3 votes

because the board's did it. Just like they picked Ultimate Hat so much when no one at a competitive level did.

D357R0Y3R2 votes

lol so accurate

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

The ONLY champion I took ulti hat on was Evelynn. Even champions that would LOVE to use it couldn't because it competed with Manaflow (hello Galio).

AirKingNeo1 votes

yeah and Eve does domination anyways so she'll still have Hunter: Ultimate.

I'm speaking out of experience as a support main... for at least 6 years now. I'm not attempting to spread false information, I'm simply sharing how I feel about the current state of supports.

Until the electrocute/ignite BS + supp item nerf going on in this season, I've always built Spellthief + Fae charm on Nami. Worked wonders and net me a 60% win rate with her on something like 50/60 games. If there was early poke going on, I could even go back and take a pot to lane.

So even if you don't see your favorite pros/streamers not building a special thing, doesn't mean it does not exist.

Been playing league since msi season 6 and been a support main since then. The role has always been fun for me and still is. The rune issue stated here while true can still be changed. As a tank you can go guardian with domination second to still do some damage or electro with resolve second and let the build make you tanky. As for mages you can SA to go full support mode or take arcane comet. The runes aren't the issue of supports the issue rn is the items. With the removale of the 2 different item paths for supports the builds became linear. The addition of twin ghosts being back is useless cause mages want that but you also want redemption and at rhat point you are pushing 3-4 active items and it gets overwhelming. For tanks it is the same build for all of them. The major problem is that they nerfed the cost of support items and now with the removale of having the option to take refil to lane to save gold in the long run you have ti invest more gold into pots which stops us from getting items and buying pink wards. It is bad enough that as a support we dont cs and always get less gold than the entire team. My team is always a level higher or should be and now they are always 1-2 items ahead of me.

hrooza dota 1 votes

wait why should supp have the same amount of items as their carrys? that kinda dont make much sense to me tbh.

Prototype Axel1 votes

Sorry i took so long to respond. Wasn't looking at the thread. The issue is not that i have the same items as them the issue is that they are more than 1 item ahead at all times. A balanced experience should be that that support is one level behind and 1 item behind. While my carry should be on 3rd item building 4th i should be on 2nd item going on 3rd. However the current state has it so they are on 3rd or 4th item and the supports are still on 2nd item building

hrooza dota 1 votes

tbh due to have more exp in dota then in lol i find that not needed at all

the word support for me is a person who sacrifice him self for the others to get ahead and part of sacrificing is item wise so i fully disagree with what you call balanced experience

a balanced experience imo is having an impact as any role so as long as you have an impact at one stage of the game i find it fair

Who cares if supports had too much sustain anyway? It doesn't matter. The adc's sustain is what matters. If they have to back frequently in lane they're going to be behind. If you're harassing down the support, except in certain situations, you're playing the lane incorrectly anyway. By the same logic Doran's shield should be nerfed bot lane because it gives the adc entirely too much sustain and makes people want to target supports more.

dunder kill2 votes

Actually in season 8 the goal was to nerf support lol. After hard buffing the role for 3+ years straight they finally realized that the role was busted OP. Now we have nerfs. They're supposed to be nerfs which is why they feel like 'a step back'.

“The new rune system heavily limits the options to support, literally every healing support uses Summon Aery while the majority of tank supports use Aftershock“ Guardian, Spellbook, Glacial Augment, or Comet/Electrocute for aggressive mage supports.

Yes, because the old rune system of what was it? Windspeakers or courage of the colossus gave us so many more options. Oh what that’s not fair, there was also the one that got turned into font of life..... oh wait it’s still an option now.

So it's just 1 step backwards then

Now I may be minority among those on the boards who identify as support mains, but I think that the 50 gold change is a minor one, but not a bad one. It prevents supports from having an exess of lane sustain early, as well as prevents items such as charm or bead being purchased. This is not necessarily a bad thing either, because as some of you have mentioned, it slows down our poke rate, which is not a bad thing.

Now instead of being able to poke without consequences or lasting repercussions, we have to critically think about trades. This in turn makes support a more skillful role early game. taking into account the fact that the item they built into did not increase in price it's not actually a waste of money but rather a front-loaded investment that pays off once you make your first back.

That aside, it doesn't prevent you from doing unique things as a support. You could start by buying a control Ward at the beginning of the match and get immediate Vision or you need it. In addition you could also do biscuit delivery which is a fairly good trade off for plain smarter instead of recklessly.

But hey, I'm no expert I'm just offering my opinion

I've given up on Riot. The moment they added "quests" to the support items, things got off the reail. But it's useless trying to talk to them. Just deal with it or uninstall (no offense, a lot of my friends did already).

Supports had way too much sustain.

bro i took a brone 5 account to plat 4 by just playing lux and morg supp and i build one item sup for wards and gold then go full dmg

Daddy Tie Me Up1 votes

Im sorry but what you are complaining about is exactly the result of giving easiest role second most power. Of course you have no room to express yourself, support doesnt have room to express yourself. When support did not have as much impact you could get away with playing dog shit builds and dog shit champions. Im all in for reverting impact of supports in game. But stop pretending that its a problem. If you play easy impactfull class prepare to build like that.

Jerry SeinfeId1 votes

Adding a shit ton of support items to the game is what ruined it. i loved it when enchanters actually had to build squishy full ap just to get a big ass shield. Now you just get redemption and some other shit and your shield is already bigger than full ap janna's.

Support tanks were actual tanks, now you get discount tank items. and god forbid we give leona anything that would make her viable as a solo laner/jungler.

The sightstone removal was good. You're allowed to build other stuff now instead of having to rush that. I miss the shield battery but aside from that you all got your item back. Literally both returned on shurelya and spooky ghosts aside from shield battery.

and cut the crap with smallest playerbase already. I doubt it's much smaller than the other roles anyway.
