Can we have some propper horrific champions again?

King Braum··73 votes·3,377 views

Hey I dont know how anyone feels about this but Riot really seems to move away from the ideal of making a champion for everyone, like. Riot, i love you guys but these reworks are getting out of hand.

Urgot doesnt look like a man that got butchered by a sword and then patched back up with the most experimental of medical prosedures, he's just a buff fatguy in a glorified trolly, like he looks cool and all but he's not the same as before.

Galio used to be a champion made with the ideal of making a monster for people who still wanted to play the good guy, but he's not a monster anymore, he's all might made of stone.

Yorick was a deformed hunchback, and apperently he got a spinal correction in the time of his rework.

Swain could transform into a glorous raven monster straight out of a horror story but now he just becomes an edgy version of kayle.

like, i dont think im asking for much but i feel like the people who love playing monsters are being putt off the side a bit here. I'd love to see some propper horrific monsters, and not like rek'sai or cho'gath. like am i the only one that would love to see a bit more love for the monsters of the game because things are starting to feel really cookie cutter now where if you're not an actual beast you cant qualify as a monsterous champion.

Don't forget Vel'Koz. He may look like a boring tentacle eye thing, but listen to his voice lines and you'll realize... dude's got some SERIOUS sociopath tendencies towards humans. For example, based on his VO we know he:

  • Removed organs once each from multiple people to see which ones were actually important (apparently all of them, who'd've guessed?)
  • Flayed two people alive and tried to swap their skins
  • Cut a dude in half to see if either side grew back
  • Heated multiple subjects to determine "melting point"; results inconsistent
  • Did all of the above to living subjects without the use of sedatives or any anesthesia

TBH as a character he scares me way more than any of the others.

Personally, I want a rework of Cassiopeia That embraces some of the more snake monster. In her backstory "She relished the thought of sinking her talons into his flesh. " "Curling her tail around his chest, she squeezed his ribcage tighter and tighter, sensing his pounding heart straining beneath her grasp. She heard bones crack" And then in game? I throw snakes and spit, and shoot green things.

anyhow new adc proly kass's daughter so might be a voidified person. And we have a 4th darkin still in the works who if they keep the horsemen motif should represent Famine (good luck riot with making scales into a weapon)

I agree with you on Cassiopeia. I wish her ultimate was something a little more fun and appealing to see...I mean at the moment all it does is stare at a small cone in front of her and flash a greenish light. As a serpent she should be able to put that long tail to work!

throwing snakes bit always makes me laugh at the thought of cass being scary. throwing a snake would be pretty hard lol

Well for the fourth darkin. We already know it's a female, Varus' sister, and she's prob support or mid (I guess support since sibiling duo). I'd imagine her having some kind of magic staff (since we have a scythe, sword, and bow). PLUS, Riot said there a five darkin. Maybe this fifth one can be some Shadowisles Darkin? (since one in the Shadow Isles). That would be a cool, horror like champion. Granted idk what weapon they would have... Giant Axe (Darius)? Hammer? Spear (Xin)? Pole (Jax)? Mace (Morde)? Maybe some kind of Katana, smaller sword than Aatrox?

I mean the closest idea of a "Horror" Champion I can think of is Thresh. I mean he is... kinda menacing.

Horrific shouldn't just be "oh he looks like a monster." I feel like terror should come from the way they speak, the way they move, the way their abilities work.

Urgot may not look like a pure monstrosity anymore, but he is still something that if I happened upon I would be scared for my life. Even in game his ult is absolutely terrifying.

Warwick makes you scared just by being half health anywhere on the map. His run is pretty scary, and his ult looks monstrous.

Sion falls under the same boat. He's a little less rawr than ww, but he is still far from basic.

It sounds like you want more "ugly" champions and less "Scary" champions to me.

Kai Guy8 votes

when he is in a good spot... DARKNESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! scary shit.

Jhin is a monster in man shape imo.

Eve despite her looks has lines and attitude that freak me out.

Some more Dark skin takes on champions would also be welcome by me, Omega squad Teemo, Deepsea nami, Void X, Old lolipoppy. etc.

Chembaron Yamada3 votes

Agreed, Evelynn is the same. While she became sexier, she is scarier too in my opinion.

Especially with that ultimate. So yeah, I think op means ugly instead of horrific.

King Braum3 votes

to me there's a multitute of ways you can convey monsters, i use horrific specifically because yes i believe ugly monster's are amazing. monster's come in all forms, shapes and sizes but it seems the horrific more gruesome monsters are getting left out, even worse, getting replaced. I personally love monster's but i'd hate to see these true nightmares just go and be replaced with what is essentially just a big scary human.

Urgot doesnt convey the same feeling to me now as he did back then, he feels like any cyborg, given he is still scary and his abilities, voicelines and the like still make him a monster but with the old urgot you can look at him and see, this guy didnt choose to be like this, he was thorn down and they just build him back up again. it's a form of visual story telling i love.

I do have to agree on Warwick and Sion though, with both of them Riot took what's great about then and didnt change them all too much, just added to it. Sion was still a hulking brute that would be terrifying to meet on the battlefield, wearing oriments of his fallen opponents, even wearing the king's crown as his jawpiece and Warwick just really got more into the mindset of a hunter. these are the type of visual updates i'd love to see more but lately it seems like Riot favores "cool" visual updates (ie, Yorick, Swain, Galio) which makes me a little sad to be honest.

See I consider those champs badass, especially Sion. I mean old urgot was disgusting, but new urgot? He is damn well cool as shit looking. Terrifying looking too. I think terrifying is cool, but just straight up ugly for the sack of ugly (old urgot) is just stupid.

I would like a female chemtech augmented champion from Zaun.

An assassin with blades attached to her body and tubes that let her cover these blades with her own toxic blood. Just something that gives us a truly gross girl champion. Extra points if she is stalking Urgot and fangirling over him.

i think cho fits that role. warwick, rek sai, renekton, noc, fiddle and mundo kinda i guess.

King Braum15 votes

but that's the point, Warwick, Reksai, Renekton, Cho gath etc.. they're more or less just animals. what happened to good old monster, horrifying creatures that were awesome for their weird and messed up appearance and how scary they could be. now adays the more horrific monsters have all had visual updates that made them more human, more normal instead of embrasing what makes them so unique from everyone else, it's just becoming a lot more cookie cutter and i for one would just like to play a horrifying monster for once, not an animal. not an evil person that leans towards being a monster. an actual good ol fassion monster

Jerry SeinfeId15 votes

I understand that. personally i see the galio rework as the biggest failure of all the reworks i've seen while playing.

I'd personally love a skeleton character, not karthus but a warrior or pirate or something but i doubt it could happen.

Riot has stated most people who like more "ugly" characters still want them to look cool. then you get the new Urgot. He's clearly not pretty, but he looks like a beast.

There's also the fact that they want their own unique characters and not just classic monsters. I'm kinda hungry for a classic good old fantasy trope tbh.

Mundo is propably the most deformed human you're gonna see for a while. Sion fills the zombie/frankenstein spot. He's riot's personal example, He had to look "ugly" but people still have to "want to be that guy". Noone really wants to look like sion, but they sure as hell would love to be what his core is. Morde and fiddle are pretty high on the rework list. If fiddle's rework is anything like warwicks it's gonna be pretty rad. His lore really gave me an eerie vibe when i first read it, him just being locked into that room.

I wouldn't get my hopes up considering the general playerbase, but i think it's high time they release something spooky scary again.

edit: i just found out fiddle has like new lore, it's pretty rad.

The issue with a skeleton character is that the Chinese have some religious or tradition with showing bones? Something like that. That's why karthus got changed to what he is now. You can see it in his old splash art that the Chinese version had its boney face changed.

Jerry SeinfeId2 votes

I know about that, it's only partially true. The problem is chinese laws around it are very vague and thus it's better to just not add a skeleton as opposed to hoping it passes. AFAIK ofcourse.

we really could use some new spoopy champs that have that same theme as Kalista Thresh Karthus Nocturne ALSO Morgana VGU soon plea.

Also it would be cool to have a champ that was just pure fucking evil that dosent give a shit about anything...........oh wait Veigar :3 but yah the champ releases have slowed down so it takes longer to hit all the niches i guess

Divewing2 votes

So Horrific champions are required to be deformed in some way?

I thought Horror was supposed to invoke fear...?

King Braum1 votes

no they dont have to be. there are ton's of ways horror can be conveyed. like steven king once said, there are three type of terror, Gross-out, Horror and Terror. lately i feel like Riot seems to stear more towards a singular archetype though. Gross-out and Horror creatures are getting replayed by Terror monsters. something close to a human but just isnt quite human, something familiar but strange at the same time. truely something you can be scared off but one archetype shouldnt overrule the others. even less, they shouldnt replace them.

Ok look, it's every players right to want or expect certain things from a game, but what you're complaining about is LoL's general aesthetic. LoL used to be more "spooky" because it tried to emulate Dota's aesthetic, but now LoL has its own fan base and is extremely popular. Riot wants to create it's own atmosphere and theme, and the kind of champions you're asking for just don't fit the theme anymore. If you want to play a "monster" as in an entity that both unnatural and evil, those still exist in LoL. I understand not placing the void creatures (Rek'sai, Cho'gath, etc.) in the "monster" category, because they are technically just aliens from a different world/dimension. Urgot Urgot , Sion Sion , Nocturne Nocturne , Evelynn Evelynn , Aatrox Aatrox , Mundo DrMundo , Fiddlesticks Fiddlesticks , Karthus Karthus , Rhaast Kayn , Tahm Kench TahmKench , and Zac Zac all fit the criteria for being a "monster". They are all somewhat evil, and they are unnatural for runeterra. If you truly have a problem with the aesthetic then go play Dota instead.
