Questions about ravenous hunter rune and and lifesteal in general

Ravenous hunter heals based on ability damage. But is something like warwicks innate increase in damage, or other champions that have extra passive onhit damage, are those treated as ability damage? I assume the passive onhit effects from abilities would count, but am not sure if innate passive onhit traits also count. I also assume ravenous hunter doesnt care what type of damage the ability deals, but only that it originates from an ability.

I was also wondering: for the purpose of lifesteal, if you're dealing with someone like Irelia, Yi, or warwick with added passive onhit damage - does lifesteal in general heal off the added damage of thier onhit effects or only thier pure auto attack damage?

Another question - does deaths dance heal off true damage dealt or is that not counted as physical?

Ravenous Hunter heals from all damage besides autoattack damage. You can test it by equipping ravenous hunter + overheal in practice tool and just see which things create an overheal shield. Even if it's like 1 or less hp healed you still get the visual effect if you are at full health.

Lifesteal heals only from damage included in the same damage packet as the autoattack. I can think of one special case, MF's passive. It's a separate damage packet but you lifesteal off it. Abilities that trigger onhit effects will also heal, like Ez Q, GP Q, etc... And those abilities include their bonus damage in the lifesteal calculation.

A lot of effects actually add damage to the same damage packet as the basic attack, and thus increase lifesteal. Sheen/triforce (but not lichbane), and some attack reset abilities but not all of them, abilities that trigger on-hits as mentioned above.

Thanks, that is helpful.

However it's not entirely clear to me from your post how ravenous hunter applies to onhit added damage. Is only the onhit added damage used for healing calculations, or is none of it factored into healing because it all counts as part of the auto attack damage packet?

Ravenous Hunter heals off on-hits which are a separate damage packet from the basic attack. This includes every magic damage on-hit but it also includes things like BotRK and Bloodrazor. So for Ravenous Hunter only the on-hit damage is used.

BotRK's on-hit effect actually heals from lifesteal as well because it is special cased.

Bloodrazor does not heal from lifesteal, like most other on-hit effects.

It used to be easier to tell because the game displayed each damage packet separately. But it was cluttered so they made the display system show multiple damage packets as one number. The underlying system hasn't changed though.
