How do you properly farm CS as an ADC?

I was trying out ADC and I got flamed by my support for AA'ing the melee minions. ._.;

In general you want to auto attack minions as little as possible while also getting the last hit on them for the gold. So the bare minimum is 6-7 autos per wave, but doing it like this will usually cause the wave to push towards your tower unless the enemy bot is matching your autos or your support is damaging the minions too. Whether or not you want this to happen depends on the matchup and your playstyle.

If you are playing to farm and not fight your lane opponents than doing the bare minimum is fine, except in the occasions where the enemy team could easily dive you under tower. In which case the bare minimum is not ideal. In these situations you want to keep the minion wave close to your tower, but not in range of it. You want it slightly out of range so that if they want to spring a dive on you they have to do it without minions. So basically what you want to do is simply auto as many times as the enemy adc autos, with maybe a few more to counteract damage from the enemy support or a little less to counteract your own supports damage. This kind of thing is something that really comes down to your own judgement of the situation. You can even ask your support to help damage the minions if you can't out push the enemy adc, like say sivir. This kind of farming is considered to be freezing and it can be a powerful tool if utilized correctly. If done perfectly you can even force the enemy botlane from being able to farm or even get exp without being extremely easy to gank.

Then there is the shove lane strategy where you just want to auto constantly and force the enemy bot to farm under tower. This is one way to set up easy dives for your jungle/mid if you can get them to roam bot. The problem with this is that you open yourself up to being ganked pretty easily, so you need to keep wards up at all time and have a LOT of map awareness. This kind of farming is best if you can also poke down the enemy botlane and force them to leave lane. That puts at a huge advantage and can literally win the lane entirely. I would not recommend this style of farming unless your jungler is glued to bot or if you know 100% that you aren't going to be ganked. Even warding efficiently is not always enough to protect you when you extend this far. Its the farming equivalent of feast or famine.

In my experience, the best choice is to freeze right outside of your towers range. It gives you more options and more safety than anything else, but it is a lot more difficult to pull off, especially if you are vs a bot that is trying to do the same thing or are trying to push to tower themselves.

last hit the minions. thats literally it. Now wave control is a whole different topic but last hitting is farming.

But wouldn't that be called Freezing if I just last hit all of them? Aren't I supposed to like AA the melees or casters?

He means land the last hit on creeps so you can get gold. He literally said in the next sentence wave control is a whole different animal.

It's a tad difficult to answer this, since it wholly depends on a few things. The adc you're playing, the support you have, and who you're fighting against (even more so, if it happens to be your counter). I prefer alternating between safe farming and occasional poking. Typically as an adc, especially with how the game is now, being too aggressive is ultimately a gamble in the end, and can typically bite you harder than the bite you try to lead with, if you aren't planning those acts of aggression carefully.

Time your attack attacks, gauge how much of the minion hp bar it will do, and use that info to get the cs. If ur support flames u for hitting melees in general he/she is a dumbass.

More than your opponent is the main thing. The difference in cs often is what really matters, so if you're heavily trading and theres ganks happening and all that stuff, numbers are of course going to be lower.

At the pro level 10cs/min is a thing (so 100 at 10 min, 200 at 20 min, etc) and in fact these days many of them crack like 12+ cs min which is silly. 7-8ish cs/min is probably more typical as decent cs for regular players.

This doesn't really change significantly between adcs, it's just in some cases they might have to work harder for it (farming cs under tower as trist can suck until pretty late for example, while sivir after an item or two can full clear waves no problem). On that note, the same is true for top/mid farm as well. ADC tends to scale best with the gold so it's most important that they're good at it, but last hitting is still a valuable skill for everyone. (Even supports/jg's have to hold lane occasionally and should have the skill required to get perfect cs in the absence of harass.)
