Mages bullying intended tops out of their lane

feintfiend··3 votes·1,785 views

We've been seeing this for a while now but it might get worse. According to LS mages will completely bully all intended tops other than Urgot out of lane and that Cass, Ryze, Vlad, Ori, Liss, Viktor and Urgot will be the best tops

Gnar, Kled, Rumble, Aattrox, and other top picks and Junglers disagree. Top lane is a fiesta, but not yet a wild one.

edit: I didnt mean top picks as tier. But for top lane.

"Gnar Rumble Aatrox are top picks" You're joking right? All these champs are dogshit, except MAYBE Rumble but he still needs buffs

Saevum2 votes

Non of them are dogshit, there are STRONGER picks, yeah, that is more debatable. But calling these dogshit or weak is far from the truth.

Gnar has been one of the worst champs in the game for a while now, Riot purposefully gutted him for proplay his winrate is abysmal and even his mains think he's oure garbage.

Aatrox was hovering at a 44% winrate top before these heavy nerfs thst make it impossible to land multiple Q's. He's gone.

Rumble is extremely niche but still subpar and gets outdueled by many "scaling" champs early into the game.

Gnar is fine. His teamfight potential is still there, he has recieved nerfs but not "abysmal" ones. He can hold his own to the likes of Darius.

Aatrox? impossible to land Q's? aim properly more like it.

Rumble niche? he's still really good even for the likes of Jax and Nasus that are still a threat.

Gnar has a 44% winrate, the lowest winrate of all top lane champions

Aatrox had a 44% winrate prior to his nerfs, although it is higher after the nerf I expect it to fall after a few days have passed and enough data is gathered read his patchnotes his dash was gutted unless the enemy stands still u only hit 1 edge

Barely anyone plays Rumble he loses way too many matchups and can't bully effectively againsg many brusiers/fighters. If you knew anything about Rumble you'd know he's better mid than top nowadays.

Aatrox has a 47.13% winrate on mid lane and a 46.82% win rate on top lane. If you look at the best Aatrox players, you can see an Abysmal knowledge on the champion cause their winrates are not even close to 50% and all of them have 50+ games on Aatrox. Nerfs were well deserved.

He is being picked by non-mains which is altering the actual truth.

Rumble: 52% win rate in Mid. 50% win rate in top. It's not his fault that the likes of irelia and renekton exist. Urgot can also give him problems. But he's far from 'dogshit'.

Gnar: 46% win rate Top. His mains have him close to 52%-50% at his lowest. You can't be serious.

I dont know where you are getting your league Rates but its far from the truth.

OP.GG is not a good source of information for this.

But let's go back to your topic.

Mages are dominant now on top lane? yes, some of them are. Viktor for instance has recieved several nerfs, and he is still there. The free movement speed is keeping him safe from most matchups and his shield provide good trades and cheese poke.

Vlad scales good. But he is somewhat gated. Vlad has been in top lane for awhile, so he might get a visit from the nerf bat due to magic pen items.

Ryze is Ryze.

Cass its another mage that has been top lane for awhile. She cant abuse magic pen from boots, and she starts slow early game. She can cheese some poke against you if you dont respect the early level 2-4. The Q pathing and the comet were nerfed i think. it has been commented before.

Lastly Urgot. Yeah, he's strong still. its the shield most likely. IF you ask me. And the fact that he is ranged-ish. His range is kinda low, but top that range with his passive, shield and flip, and you get a beefy bully nonetheless.

Gnar is definitely not good right now and hasn't been since the start of season 8. He doesn't have a keystone for one. For two, they have nerfed and nerfed and nerfed him for competitive play to the point of nonexistence. He sits as one of the lowest winrate champions right now. Op.gg has him at a 43% winrate.

He got hit due to his frozen mallet version. He was out of line. He also was being abused cause he had few counters and he could work around them with a good team or a decent jungler.

Mages may outlane traditional tops, but they don't bring the same stuff to the mid - late game. It's a case of lose Lane win game for traditional tops. Suck up the bad Lane, don't feed and you'll win.

Junglers should pressure as well, since these mages will push in. The strength of the mage is kiting/range. If you flank them, they have nowhere to kite to. The tank/fighter is typically better in 2v2s even early game.

Cass, Vlad and Victor scale really well. You're not outscaling Cass or Vlad with any melee champ.

Vlad has always been a top lane character.

That depends on how long you have been playing the game. Vlad was a midlane mage because he could sustain through marksmen harass in season 1. Perspective. Vlads a battle mage traditionally midlane until siege mages made it a very unfavorable place to be.

It's not about outscaling them directly, it's about bringing something different to the table.

Vlad lacks hard cc. Viktor's is very conditional, and cass's is only on her ultimate and also conditional. Most traditional tops will be much more helpful against a fed enemy ADC with good protection. If both teams have a good ADC, I'd probably rather be on the team with the fighter/tank over the DPS mage.

Sure, these mages could kill the ADC themselves (but they'd have to catch the ADC without his peel) and they'd do more damage than traditional tops in the teamfight. Traditional tops will win the teamfight more often than not in this case though.

Believe it or not, but traditional tops benefit from ADC meta. All traditional picks do, because they were traditional from an ADC meta. These new picks only exist because of the pull away from ADC meta allowing them to compete.

If the adc has good protection and is fed than he will delete any fighter but a mage may do soemthing.

"traditional tops" wont win teamfights more in general, possibly in the midgame depending on pick but they will be far less useful in a lategame teamfight. Its like you cant remember playing with a Cass or Vlad in lategame.

It is still adc meta. Your standard is just warped by the norm being marksmen making up 99% pickrate bot. In a 'op adcs' meta fighters will be weaker and tanks stronger because of greater difficulty fighting them, but cc is always broken in this game because of lack of counters.

I'm not saying the traditional top will kill the enemy ADC. I'm saying the traditional top will be better at protecting his own adc than vlad/cass.

Vlad/Cass in late game are huge as mid lane mages. Vlad does alright top, especially in or against certain comps. However unless you have a super cc heavy jungle, or a tanky mid like Galio or Lissandra, etc... making these picks top lane is going to take away that CC from your comp, which will let the enemy ADC carry.

It's not though. Most bruisers fall off much harder than mages

Funny how mages taking over toplane was a problem, but the mage take over of botlane was just adcs crying. Hmmmmm

feintfiend2 votes

Over half of this forum is mage mains mass downvoting anything that calls them remotely strong

FireDrizzle2 votes

Unless you have hyper mobility you can't touch Cass, buy full boots and she moves quicker than you anyway which is broken.

Rumble's literally a mage, why is somebody listing him in an argument saying "top picks like Rumble disagree that mages will bully top laners out of top"

Doge20201 votes

Because the argument was that “traditional” midlaners (like Cass, Victor and Ryze. Vlad doesn’t count because he is a toplaner) are going to bully “traditional” toplaners (which Rumble is) out of top.

Yes rumble is a mage, but he is mainly a toplaner rather than a midlaner.he gets poked less in top (which usually has melee champs) rather than in mid (where a very common amount of ranged and specifically poke mages are).
