Mage vs. Assassin vs. Mage Assassin
If mages are meant to burst people down with large amounts of AP, and assassins are meant to pick off low health targets, then what are mage assassins like Katarina and Ahri supposed to be?

You have a continuum between Damage (assassin) and Utility (support) that all mages fall under. Ahri, Kassadin, and the like are just closer to one end than the other.
assassins aren't really meant to pick off low health targets tbh…. they are just extremely bursty and assassin doesn't necessarily mean they aren't the same thing, although it says its a secondary most of the time they are both like leblanc
An assassins role is to kill high priority targets, not low health targets. Mage assassins are basically magic dmg assassins who burst down important opponents.
Both mages and assassins are burst damage champions.
Mages are going to do their damage from a longer range and is going to have better CC and utility effects.
Assassins are going to be more mobile and generally have more reliable damage output.
Hybrids, as you'd expect, take some of the characteristics of both side, but aren't so focused on being good in one way. Ahri has fairly long range and fairly high mobility, but her damage application isn't as reliable as LeBlanc and her CC is weaker than Lux.
