Thank You For The Ekko Comic
I mean it. It was good. I'm sure that there are flaws and criticisms, but don't let that discourage you. Webcomics are great, and I would love to see more, along with different stories.

No, thank YOU! You guys are the reasons we want to make things like comics and animations.
I'm not sure, but I haven't seen you around here before. Are you... apart of the narrative team?
Hover over Faux's name and you'll see the title "Narrative Writer". So yeah, first time I'm seeing mr/mrs/miss/master Faux though.

I'm a lurker. I've been know to lurk.
So I take it you have viewed a number of the recent lore threads that got quite a bit of attentio.
I'm a lurker. I've been know to lurk.
Question: Why is more of Ekko's backstory and lore being released in the AMA than in the officially released material? For example: Ekko has living parents?
I'm not sure, but I haven't seen you around here before. Are you... apart of the narrative team?
Yes I am.

Thanks! can't guarantee I'll reply often, but I do read. You are being heard.

Sorry, I'm sure you're nice and all, but I've heard that line too many times. I hope you're being sincere, but understand that I do have my doubts.
Faux is always sincere. That was an odd sentence. And sorry I've been away a while, had some life get in the way. However, yes, we are listening and we're working on a variety of things that have come from that (including new bio formats, stories and stuff that you'll be seeing soon).
I know i've said this before and we've had these conversations so I know the proof is much more important than any promises that we've not been able to live up to for a variety of reasons.
None of those reasons include because we don't care or don't want to. We want to do more stories like Chronobreak (Faux and the team did a really great job, I hope you agree), and expand the champions and their stories in many ways.
I apologize for the time that it is taking in getting pure stories to you, but we are working very hard to increase our capacity to do so.
Also, though we have our disagreements, it's really nice to be back.
whyyyyy aren't there conversations about these works in prooogreeess
you know silence leads to baaad thiiings :C

I see you dont know how these things work.
Instead of being condescending, you should really learn some of League's history, in terms of development and communication. Plenty of folks do, in fact, know what it means for something to be a work in progress.
Do you remember the conversations around the Xerath rework? Lots of ideas were thrown around, and everyone felt awesome because Xelnath was chatting with us the whole way through, making sure the rework was a success. Do you remember the release of Xerath's new lore? The character was completely changed, his motivations outright replaced, with no prior conversation. Lots of anger, much of which lingers.
That's not even getting into the really old examples (Magma Chamber, stealth, supports as 0-gold ward-bots).
To be honest, it's because of not wanting to set expectations on timeline and so on. Also, just to be open with you, we may still decide that changes are necessary. However, I will say that we've been looking at Singed and Warwick due to the longstanding inconsistencies that exist in their story. I've been looking through various threads to get input on what the essences of those characters are and they've been included in our thinking.
This is part of an on-going effort to address a large number of issues in the current bios. I didn't start up another thread since I've been back in the saddle mainly as there have been some really good ones already. If you fine folks want to talk specifically about them in the very immediate present (and nothing has been finalized on them yet, which is why I'm bringing them up), then that's certainly an opportunity to get your feedback that I'd be happy to engage with.

I appreciate the honesty, and I'm frankly too tired/frustrated to give this the refutation that I and many others have given so many times. It hasn't worked so far, not even being acknowledged, so all we can do is hope what you're working on is a hit this time (Sion) and not another miss (Xerath).

Frankly, this is all we need. Just an idea of where you happen to be looking right now. Anything that lets us in on the conversations and developments.
Well, kinda hard to engage with you when it´s mostly guesswork what you are working on and what can be influenced right now. For me the most important topic right there would be how to avoid the next trundle/xerath, where you completly alter the Character/Motivations of an already existing Champion - sth. that has been addressed by the Community quite frequently but never got a real response/discussion. Aswell as the more foundamental discussion why anyone would want to seperate gameplay and story in the first place - it´s the unique advantage of this medium and I´d rather see you guys try to work with your medium instead of resignating and changing the medium altogether...there´s nothing wrong with having comics, written tales and vids - but by no means that should lead to completely seperating gameplay and storytelling. Preretcon the lore did a decent job of connecting story&gameplay, i really still don´t understand why you just crashed it instead of working with it and enhance it.

If we do this, the absolute first thing you need to do is set up the rules of engagement. What you're looking for and how it should be formatted so you can comfortably read it without violating your "legal reasons."
It has been a problem, Jaredan, ever since the last time you came in here, apologized for your silence, then ran off to parts unknown.
You need to do that before anything else. Otherwise, we're going to waste time with long story idea posts and nothing happening because of it.
I thought they made it quite clear last time (after the initial misunderstanding, that is).
Don't suggest story, discuss characters. What motivates Singed and Warwick? I think that Warwick's interaction with Soraka is important to both of them. Warwick losing control is a necessary part of his character, but seeing some human traits might work, so long as they aren't sentimental. Things like that are fine.
Suggesting storyline - I want Singed and Warwick to travel to Bilgewater together blah blah blah? Not fine.
The discussion of Xerath's change is the right type of discussion - What made Xerath Xerath-y - It just needs to happen before the lore change this time around.
This is precisely it. And expressed much better than I did, thanks (I really should try to get a few hours sleep).
Rules of engagement: Tell us what the most important aspects are of those Champions that already exist and that you feel are vital. What aspects of their character, their personality, their motivations and the things they have done do you think make them wonderful to you.
And this isn't a rule, but just to be clear, I didn't run off. The reason for my recent absence is just a private matter I'd prefer not to discuss. The timing was horrendous in light of my commitment to being here more regularly, but it was unavoidable and out of my hands. Still, my apologies, I detest not following through on promises.
From one of my posts in another thread:
A naïve kid, always bullied by his peers, made fun of. The runt of the tribe. Suddenly it is discovered he is special, he is offered a chance to save his entire tribe, become a hero for eternity.
Eagerly he takes it.
He is praised by his entire tribe. They all love him and praise him for his noble sacrifice. Nothing could be better for our troll.
Then his tribe starts shunning him.
His tribe, now over the initial gratitude of their new hero, starts shunning him for what he has become after his sacrifice. He is back to square one, the runt of the tribe. Except for one thing. No longer is he the naïve kid. He leaves his tribe, embittered by his experience, cynical by what he learned.
I like the progression from naïve runt to cynical troll. I like how he went from being a disillusioned troll, blinded by heroic ideals, to a cynical, embittered and scarred one.
Now he goes from basically the same naïve troll to a power-hungry chief, ruling with strength. The result from the sacrifice is all different.
Worse yet, I think this was unnecessary. He didn't need to be a power-hungry troll to fullfil his current role in the Freljord. Without IoW, the old Trundle wouldn't've had anywhere to go.
Sadly, now, I lost my faith in narrative. I cannot trust them with my time and emotions again, cannot just go care about the new characters, for the same would happen to me again. Trundle and arguably Xerath are the 'living' proof. It's not a great feeling when your favorite character one day, instead of getting more lore, gets removed.
Worse yet, the new troll has fans. It's a character of its own, asking for the new troll to be removed for the old one would be pointless. It'd just reaffirm what old Trundle and Xerath proofed: Riot is happy to remove/change characters.
Feel free to disagree with me, but tell me why. I like discussions.

Could we talk Trundle or Xerath? Trundle got blatantly replaced, yet Riot seems quite happy with the result. No longer is he the cynical embittered troll, he is now the power-hungry chief troll. Xerath got his modus operandi and main motivation changed.
Could we talk about Riots apparent tendency to change/remove characters? By my logic, I don't want to care about your lore because my favorite character could get, and got, removed at any point in time. Why should I invest time and emotions into your lore and take such risks? How can I enjoy your lore when I constantly am reminded that this character could be gone in a week?
If my logic is wrong, tell me why. If it isn't, could you explain yours?
Please be careful with singed's story. I love how his action's have shaped other character's stories. It is like his existence has created a wave through history.
Thanks! can't guarantee I'll reply often, but I do read. You are being heard.
How are we being heard, if you don't mind me asking?
What have you guys taken from our criticisms/rage to inform future lore releases/writing?
P.S. thank you for venturing forth... would love if you'd be interested in tackling some of the hard comments & Q's with responses.
I'm the one who made the 'come out of hiding' thread, so I'm happy you peaked your head out :)
How are we being heard, if you don't mind me asking?
The call for more stories, and specifically more lore (yup two different things) has been heard, and we're working on them. Many people across Riot, certainly not just Narrative, have been figuring out about how to best respond to the need and how to set priorities and build teams to create more awesome stories.
We've been working on a new format for bios (including a short intro, but also including more hooks that give a sense of history as jumping off points for stories and more flavor), and you'll be seeing some examples soon (sorry I can't be more specific, there are a few different teams involved and we're pinning down some timelines on releases).
Some of the threads on the board have also informed our prioritization on certain projects (including bios), as well as helping us with keeping a focus on core aspects of characters that we've been looking at that we want to maintain as we do any rewrites.
For me personally, it's an exhilarating time as I can see numerous things that are close to fruition and a general, concerted effort by Rioters of many disciplines to push for story.
That's tempered by the responsibility we have to do much better than we have been doing, including showing you why we made the decisions we have through products that deliver great stories and character (such as, but not limited to, new Champions) that help build an enthralling world.
It's not there yet, but talented Rioters like FauxSchizzle are working diligently to reach that goal.
In the months ahead, I hope you get to know Faux, he's one of the newer members of Narrative discipline and Champion team, plus, he's just an awesome bloke.

Jaredan.... Man I don't even know where to begin.
Your department needs to start to understand some things. One of the biggest things, is you keep kicking us, over, and over, and over. You guys have practically nothing to put forward in terms of improved content, and the communication which you've promised, on numerous occasions, would be better, is worse. Honestly, Bioluminescence and ShadowStorm have done more communicating in a week, than all of Narrative has done (about substantial topics) since the retcon. That.... THAT is abhorrent.
Honestly, you (Narrative) are in a position where nobody trusts you anymore, and for good reasons. The seemingly systematic disregard for your most devoted fans, simply for the sake of peddling product, is disheartening to say the least.
But you know what the real kick to the groin is? You're still hiding behind Soon(TM). Was 9 months since the retcon not long enough? How about the almost 3 years prior to that where the IoW was subtly dismantled? You've promised lore to be not something only used to sell champions, and you've been the only outspoken person of the Narrative discipline, and you know when the last time was that you spoke to the community? Right around the time of the Bard Q&A. This is what we threw away our previous world of Runeterra for? A bunch of Chapter 1's, a Narrative team that has one person who is willing to communicate with us, and a continued disregard for their most dedicated fans?
I've tried civility, kindness, understanding, and every other direction in the book to deliver informative posts about Narrative's direction but at this point my politeness is wasted. If the past few champions are how lore is going to be handled going forward, I'm done caring. I'm done putting emotion and effort into this game's story. When you rewrite Morgana/Kayle I don't care anymore. Make them cookie-cutter Demacian/Noxian sisters in strife. Retcon their other worldliness it doesn't matter to me anymore.
Soon has been your shield for too long. It is the end of May, and you still have nothing worthwhile to show. WHAT ARE NARRATIVE'S PRIORITIES, SELLING PRODUCT OR WRITING A WORLD WORTH GIVING A SHIT ABOUT?

You're right, in regard to the lack of communication. I hold myself personally responsible for that. Circumstances have kept me on the sidelines a bit when it comes to being player facing, but it's no excuse. My apologies.
Honestly, you (Narrative) are in a position where nobody trusts you anymore, and for good reasons. The seemingly systematic disregard for your most devoted fans, simply for the sake of peddling product, is disheartening to say the least.
We see things differently on this point, though I understand your perspective. In no way do we see ourselves as "peddling product." The members of the Narrative discipline who work on the Champion Team (as well as Events, Champion Update and more) put their heart and soul into developing characters who are enthralling and are the starting point for many stories. The pieces such as Tales of the Black Mist, Mountain, Seconds, and Chronobreak, are our attempts (including many other wonderful folks such as Artists, Designers, Engineers, etc.) to tell as much story as we can. We don't always succeed, particularly when it is such a subjective enterprise, but we want to create great stories and characters and we are building a discipline and various teams to do so.
The Champions themselves take a huge amount of effort from Narrative folks as well as the Rioters from many other disciplines who work on those teams. You can't see much of the work we're doing and I absolutely understand your anger at a lack of pure story separate from anything else right now. But our priorities are Riot's priorities through the various teams that we work on. Currently, our best opportunities to do stories coincide with products that are being made as there are teams making them. Narrative is not an independent team that sets its own goals separately. Those opportunities are changing, and we (by that I mean Riot as well as just Narrative) are building out our capabilities to tell story. Chronobreak is an example.
But you know what the real kick to the groin is? You're still hiding behind Soon(TM). Was 9 months since the retcon not long enough? There are a lot of things that have happened in the past 9 months. There isn't a person on Narrative who hasn't been working extremely hard, but I know that to you it doesn't look that way. We didn't have our ducks in a row, and we are a young company when it comes to storytelling in many ways. But we are aggressively rectifying that.
My absence is something I'm very sorry for. I don't really want to go into the reason why, but it's just been a case of something making it pretty impossible for me to be here the last couple of months.
We want to do Chapters 2-14 and beyond, but it takes time for a variety of reasons. I don't want to just make excuses or say "soon," but I believe we are leveling up towards something that I hope you like very much. Until you have more in your hands, I know what I say carries little weight for you,
I've tried civility, kindness, understanding, and every other direction in the book to deliver informative posts about Narrative's direction but at this point my politeness is wasted. I very much appreciate your passion and your civility. Your frustration is palpable and is something that I have in my head every day. I do whatever I can to do better because of it. There's a long way to go.
Soon has been your shield for too long. It is the end of May, and you still have nothing worthwhile to show. WHAT ARE NARRATIVE'S PRIORITIES, SELLING PRODUCT OR WRITING A WORLD WORTH GIVING A SHIT ABOUT?
The latter.
Personally, after this lore thing gets sorted out, I want an overview of the Runeterra because I seriously don't know what's what anymore. Runeterra and League used to be a thing, and now I don't know what's retconned and what isn't except for the League itself. Everything's all over the place, and I would really love something that would clarify everything, sort lores out, set champion relationships, and save the world of League and the Summoners.
To be honest I've lost my faith in the narrative as well a long time ago and I've cried on boards for so long. I've sworn, cried, had a gigantic discussion with people, said I don't care about the lore anymore, did this, did that.. etc. However when I look at comments like this I still have the speck of hope that you guys will do what you guys believe is best for League. Hopefully this remake of the League story itself will make League more interesting. Hopefully the players will enjoy it better.
It's been a sad time for me to see League, champions having a specific goal to join league, and summoners disappear (and who knows the other stuff that's been retconned) since it was such an interesting story and everything. Just having nothing to read over but the old lore for about 9 months was another sad factor. The JoJ and the League judgements too. I mean, Sona's Etwahl freaking goes mad and stuff, Remember?! HOW EXCITING IS THAT!! (pls).
I probably will turn salty again after waiting a month or so, but deep somewhere I will still wait for a good lore, a good story. Sometimes I look at what Riot's done to the league story and go, I'm done with this, I'll stick to the old lore, I don't like lores anymore, I'll just go read more stuff. But still, you see I'm on boards discussing about this topic again. No matter how much everyone hates you guys and gives up on lore, I want you guys to know that is because we love the story as well. We will be waiting. It's been a long time, but if the final product is awesome, I believe everyone's gonna love it again. But seriously don't Xerath the lore again please. I'll try once more; I'm still holding on. Be ready for the salt and the love.
~Tokki
Sorry, I forgot to mention: Morgana and Kayle will absolutely be retaining their other worldliness.
Sorry, I forgot to mention: Morgana and Kayle will absolutely be retaining their other worldliness.
You heard it here first folks. Jaredan's vision for Morgana and Kayle is to make their planet The Void.
On a serious note, we need to see the post-retcon world before anything that comes out is worthwhile. Currently we have VERY LITTLE that is definitive and fully canon, and much of that has to do with the fact that the retcon happened before the world was rebuilt... I think it's about time that we start addressing why the world isn't fully rebuilt yet, and when is Riot going to give us a nice fat chunk of the story so that we can understand what is/isn't canon now. Just saying "The IoW never happened" doesn't quite cut it. There are WAY too many loose ends that are intrinsic in the world to cut them out with a hatchet. Hell, even a scalpel isn't adequate here.
We need you guys to give us the world. If it's done great, stop holding it back while waiting for all the fixed champion bios to be done. You need to start releasing things as they're finished, say "fuck it" to some great surprise, and begin to rebuild the community's faith in Narrative direction.
Shock reveals aren't worth it. If there is ANYTHING Narrative should have learned over the past few years, it is to engage the community and work with us otherwise you run the risk of ruining what you touch (Trundle) or just destroying something with no real plan to back it up when the community cries out in anguish (retcon).
Lastly, we need transparency on the tech issue. Riot could re-code its entire client in less time than it takes to fix whatever this tech issue is, and we need to stop being vague about it. You want to earn some trust? You want to give the community a reason to believe that Morgana and Kayle will absolutely be retaining their otherworldiness and that you (Riot) are going to start ramping up quality lore products? Start being transparent, stop being vague, and explain to us what is going on. I highly doubt that a detailed explanation of the tech issue is going to somehow put Riot at a disadvantage with their competitors.
Worst case scenario: in lieu of detailing the tech issues, release the bios. Stop holding onto them until the tech issues are solved. Come up with a temporary solution, because the fact that players can't read actual bios, and are forced to suffice with 2 sentence quips is bull.
I am kinda glad to hear that, because I was fearing that they might be turned into some kind of "human turned into an angel, kind like the ascended, but with angels..."
The question however I'd like to know if their homeworld will be more explored then?I mean even the all-mysterious void is better established than Kayles and Morganas homeworld.
Thank you for that. Seriously. That one sentence has appeased me more than all of Riot's previous talks about lore. We need more info like that about the state of the lore. What's canon and not canon. Who gets to maintain their core values and settings. Talk to us about that. You did so with Poppy and Taric, and I hope they're better champions for it.
On that topic, it might be nitpicky, but do you still consider these characters to be champions? I never liked the DOTA term hero for villains, and most of these characters aren't legends.
I've tried civility, kindness, understanding, and every other direction in the book to deliver informative posts about Narrative's direction but at this point my politeness is wasted. If the past few champions are how lore is going to be handled going forward, I'm done caring. I'm done putting emotion and effort into this game's story. This, this is why I told myself I'd stop coming into Narrative/Lore discussions. I mean, if any champion can get Trundled or Xerath'd at any time, what actual reason is there to care? Hell, previous statements make it clear that the Narrative team is actually okay with those fiascos for the most part.
Why do we keep coming back to this? It's toxic.
Thanks! can't guarantee I'll reply often, but I do read. You are being heard.
How heard? I've seen you in two threads, and most of your attention is in the thread praising your work.
I'm sorry, but someone has to be "that guy" and right now, I'm being that guy.
Okay, I'm done being "that guy" FauxSchizzle, you can relax :P
I'm really excited for Ekko, and this comic made me even more hyped for his release. Ekko's an interesting champion, and with more backing to his release video, I'm heartbroken at it.
But if I may - why did you decide to make the whistling man a Piltoverian dude who dies in seconds, instead of this overarching bad? You had a great opportunity to add in this Zaunite serial killer who preys on orphans, or even "C" from Piltover, Caitlyn's elusive nemesis. Why didn't you decide to add a final nail to the coffin, by making Ekko fail to find the man? Would have been a great driving force behind his entire story - find the man who killed Ajuna. Cliche, but it would have been fantastic.
GUYS. WE GOT ONE.
No, thank YOU! You guys are the reasons we want to make things like comics and animations.
that´s actually sad to hear(/read). Why can´t you guys just write a damn lore? fancy comics and animations are nice and everything, but they don´t contain much intrensic values for the most part, they are void and such is the state of your world.
Hi Don, We want to do a mixture of things, and building a wealth of stories that go to make up a rich world, that can be recorded and gathered to make lore, is one of them. I have to disagree with you on a fundamental level when you say that work such as Chronobreak contains no intrinsic value. It's a story that gets to the heart of the type of person that Ekko is, as well as showing what he can do.
Your anger is something I do understand though. We haven't delivered anywhere near as much as we want to, that would be satisfying in the light of the changes we announced to the players. Riot, including Narrative has to own that, certainly, and do better by you.
When it comes to writing lore, we do want to include more, while allowing it to have enough room to breathe and let us still tell stories that haven't been completely encompassed in a bullet point or wiki entry. Right now it's difficult to do that for a variety of technical and strategic reasons. We're working on solutions that will mean there will be more of the kind of lore you prefer and that it's more easily accessible than currently. In this regard, "we" includes not just Narrative, but many disciplines and teams at Riot.
If by flaws and critisisms you mean predictable, coppied, cliche, uninspired, filled with plotwholes despite its short length, bland and shallow then yes, I do agree.
Artisticaly it was flawlessly executed, engaging and eye-catching, followed ekko's theme to the point and was really fun to watch not to mention how it's coded so every time you move forward a new panel appears.
The problem is that it felt as if it was written by a 5 year old.
That is a consistent criticism that I've seen lately. Artistically they're great at showing stories, but it's their writing that's lacking. Why? What happened to the people who made Judgments?

Can't please everyone, but thanks for reading/watching none the less!
Just wondering, but who is the oldest writer in your company? In terms of seniority. Are there writers who wrote the judgments still working on the lore?
Please, writers get treated like visual artists: nobody wants to pay them, and the cheap ones are easy to hire, and easy to fire. I assume that most of the writers for LoL are transitory, or people who weren't specifically hired to be writers.
Consider LoL's most needed form of writing: lore.
Most of LoL's lore, the old lore, looks like it was written by a recent college grad who never learned a thing about cliches. But lore doesn't have to be deep and interesting in a game like this, because MOBAs are centered around gameplay anyway.
I still don't get the concern over the lore - if you want a story, read a book.

MOBA or not, a game without a story just doesn't feel the same.
A game can have awesome gameplay, but if it doesn't have story, to many people it just feels uninspired and dull. You might not get it, but its very obvious that people do care, so I'm not sure why you folks hop in just to say that you pretty much want the lore to die because you don't care about it. Its quite rude.
One question to @FauxSchizzle
I reckon you have seen the Riot Shadowstorm threads, and all that.
But why are you guys from the narrative team so hesitant to talk to us?
You guys think all you will get is hate and threats, but in reality 99% of us actually LOOK FORWARD to seeing narrative in here. I'll take anything, but just realize that while some of us (Even I) have criticized the lore these days, I don't for one second at all doubt that seeing you here and engaging in conversation with you is the next biggest thing we crave next to the lore.
In some posts you mention hearing us, but it's very hard to see that when to most of us it seems you don't even exist.
This comic was definitely the best piece of work I've seen in the past few champion releases despite what some people think, and you don't know how much it would mean to us having you guys around here with us.

I'm sitting next to Shadowstorm at the moment.... shhhhhhhhh

I will never speak for others. Honestly, it comes down to workload and personal preference. I LOVE reading the forums. I am shy unless I have something to speak about. With the comic and the animation out, I have something I can talk about. I tend to not be very talkative IRL, unless I'm very comfortable with others.

I am humbled by this and will do better about popping in and saying hi/participating in conversations when I can.

You have no idea what it means to hear this from you. NO IDEA.

Man, I don't know what to feel about you guys. An entire department has actively chosen to not engage with its fan base for years, but then seems to claim with utter sincerity a desire to please those fans... Are we really so obtuse? How difficult is it to understand the desires of lore fans and the source of our frustration? Is the entire Narrative department just actually super new?
Back when they had no more choice but to fully reveal the Retcon, a delightful woman from the team jumped in to ease us along, she was friendly and shrugged off hate with surprising grace, then someone made some nasty remarks about how the work sucked, she responded with a meme and was promptly inundated with threats against her life,
I would be willing to assume the team is none to thrilled with us for that, and i don't blame them for avoiding us, we brought it on our selves by not shutting up the malicious elements, even now when they put out works like the comic, they get allot of you changed it now it sucks thrown at them,
