RIP Tanks (5.5-5.16)

They did it. They actually did it. The 5.16 notes have come out, it's official. Tanks are now 100% dead.

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/patch/patch-516-notes

Literally every single bit of discussion on Reddit, ask.fm, the Boards, PBE, or wherever else has been COMPLETELY ignored by Rito. What's the point of RiotRepertoir responding to things if nothing actually changes? Oh, the Garen are less shitty (but still shitty). Mordekaiser is still ruined.

item 3075 , one of the LEAST popular armor items IN THE GAME who's stats haven't been touched since 2010/2009 has finally been nerfed to a point where it's no longer good at the job it's INTENDED TO DO. Great, it does more damage against 80 AD mage auto attacks but less damage against 400+ damage crits and empowered autos. Fucking great. item 3110 is finally back to season 2/3 levels of bad and item 3143 is just bad, except against maybe a Yasuo or Ashe but even then your item 3075 returns less damage so who cares.

Hasn't Rito learned that double nerfing fucks their game? This isn't the first time. This is like a quadruple nerf.

(nerf armor items stats/effectiveness) * (buff AD champions "juggernauts") * (introduce new AD Bruiser items) * (increase the price of armor items)

I can't wait to watch those pro flashy LC$BIGPLAY$" games where players spend 80% of the game dancing around and NOT initiating fights and everyone gets popped / killed in split seconds and tower dives are even less punished. I can't wait to see LeeSin in every game AGAIN. I can't wait to see increased strategic diversity by seeing an entire role/class of champions essentially disappear from games. Oh wait.

Fucking useless Rito balance team.

It's a mixed bag in my eyes. item 3075 and item 3110 are clearly now either just straight up bad or only worthwhile on a very short list of champions. item 3143 is still going to be good, especially with that active buff and the increased resistance to crits. Most the other changes to tank items are more or less neutral in my opinion. It's only Frozen Heart and Thornmail that are outright being ruined, but those are not necessary items for most tanks. Also Titanic Hydra and Sterak's Gage are pretty significant additions to tank options allowing for tanks to add damage and/or survivability on top of their basic tankiness. Titanic Hydra in particular, functioning as a single damage item, is going to be huge for a lot of tanks. Also let's not forget the MR buffs and the many armor items that are going unchanged. I do think the Cinderhulk changes are a pretty big hit to tank junglers, making it more of a bruiser jungle item since it's better on its own while granting less power when building really tanky. Overall I think these changes are pretty questionable, but I don't think tanks are dead.

So on the Frozen Heart and Thornmail changes, two points. We're watching these closely, and will adjust as needed. Two, these items made it very hard to build other items that had armor on them without completely removing AD threats from the game. Frozen Heart was especially crazy in terms of the stats per gold spent.

That meant that if we ever wanted to add an item that could compete, we had to either doom them to tier two if we made them reasonable, or add another item that gave out waaay too much for the gold spent. If we make items that compete with the top tiers of efficiency, we simply create the new must buy build, rather than inject any sort of decision making.

We want items to provide power more contextually, rather than just give out a lot of stats. This allows the same item to be stronger and weaker from game to game, based on comps, who is strong, and how you want to play.

That being said, we did hit a lot of tank core items in this patch, and we will be watching if the other compensation buffs (MR buffs and some armor base stat buffs) keep these guys afloat. Totally get that these changes are a lot to cope with in a block like this.

I think something to make up for Frozen Heart at least is, maybe you could change the Attack Speed slow aura back to the 20% it used to have? Not only would it strengthen its niche, but we lost yet another attack speed slow due to the Darius rework so making the only item that gives this utility better at doing that would help out.

As for Thornmail... I honestly don't know as I'm not sure about how the math works out with the scaling off your bonus armor. Best I can think of is to give it some other stat besides just armor to make it have a general purpose niche of some kind (Like how Frozen Heart gives mana) of which the only defensive stat I can think of that isn't given by an armor item (Except through a unique passive) is movespeed but I don't know if it would make sense to put movespeed on it.

So if we need to buff these items, you are correct that we'd look first at the unique effects the items have. Definitely the only option, but we want to make sure items have more power tied up in the things that are special to them.

AtheosisX21 votes

I think a lot of us are concerned that if these items have been over-nerfed you won't do anything about it for quite some time, if ever. I mean look at Essence Reaver, Runaan's Hurricane, Guinsoo's Rageblade, etc. These items have been in a bad state for a long time, and you guys never buff them or only buff them very slightly (Runaan's Hurricane).

The one "unique" thing about item 3075 got nerfed. It's supposed to be the anti-basic attack item. Now it returns half as much of the damage dealt by AD. What, is it now a hybrid "sort-of anti-basic attack, sort-of armor stacking" item??

item 3143 had a unique identity. It was the anti-kiting item. It used to give a 10% movement speed debuff on-hit. It reduced kiting potential that ranged champions had and allowed for easier gap closing. Now, it no longer gives the 10% movement speed debuff (yes I was super salty last year when you guys removed it) and now is an anti-crit item? Wasn't item 3075 supposed to be the anti-crit item? So which is it? Is item 3143 built against crit or attack speed? Or is it just built no matter what because it's a ball of stats that just gives 60 armor/400 HP now? Where's the uniqueness? The new item 3143 overlaps MORE with the new item 3075 than previously.

item 3110 was a straight up nerf. Did we forget the days of season 2/3 when nobody bought this item? The stats weren't too different from before. Also, was the item gold efficient? Sure. If you ignore its mana stat (which is a deceptively useless stat if you think about it), it's not THAT gold efficient. Also, why was increasing the price not an options? Why ALSO reduce 10 armor? item 3110 is the anti-attack speed item yet why does it have the same amount of attack-speed debuff as item 3143 ? Doesn't feel that unique. "Oh it has an aura". Yes, an aura that is 700 range. The attack speed reduction itself (to the user) feels the exact same as the one from item 3143.

How about this: Keep the 90 armor on item 3110 but I want to see at least a 30% or 35% attack-speed debuff. On that note, item 3143 should have no attack speed debuff and double down by giving 25% crit reduction. Aren't all these changes about being unique? Do you see the hypocrisy of this?

Cavemantero5 votes

I agree..many 'fixes' here were completely unwarranted other than to make sure people's heads explode for LCS. Fearless....the reason SC2 basically died as an e-sport was because of the terrible terrible damage. It leaves out any room for real strategy when an army/teams explode in just a few seconds off one engagement. Tanks are what create the different strategic and tactical variety on the battlefield. Without them the meta game will be so stale many will lose interest.

DrCyanide4 votes

My biggest problem is Thornmail. I don't play tanks that much, but when I do I snag Thornmail asap if I see they have a lot of auto-attack reliant champions. I feel like these changes have very much muddled the cases for when you'd want to buy it, and will probably result in fewer purchases.

So if we need to buff these items, you are correct that we'd look first at the unique effects the items have. Definitely the only option, but we want to make sure items have more power tied up in the things that are special to them.

I think you need to make the unique aspects of the items more appealing, and really look at what they will be against, more than just make them "special".

For example, Randuins will without a doubt become the new go to over frozen heart because of the crit mitigation, because Crit is an easy to obtain and must buy for Marksman right now. Any mitigation to Crit will be highly prized, so basically you guys just went full circle from making Randuins the most bought, to Frozen heart, then back to Randuins again.

Unique doesn't always mean good, like with Essence Reaver vs Bloodthirster. Sure Essence Reaver is "unique" but not really unique enough. The special ability isn't that great against anything is the problem, whereas Bloodthirster has more lifesteal which is the real thing people want, plus that shield.

I think there needs to be less of a focus on "unique" and more of a focus on useful vs X and Y, like Randuins is now. It may take a couple of days, but I can promise you pros are going to rush for Randuins just like they used to before the nerfs to it and buffs to Frozen Heart.

In reality these changes have made unique items, but just lowered the real choices, because the unique aspects (10% crit mitigation is a big deal right now) honestly take the choice out of the choice.

You have to now be even more careful how you balance, because if you say, lower that to 7% crit mitigation, or 5%, since you guys like to buff and nerf in percentages of 5, then what is the point of the unique aspect, and no one will get it and just spam frozen heart.

tl;dr

You have "balanced" your way into a very awkward corner when you look at the entire picture.

Dr Poro4 votes

What if armor as a whole turns out to be too weak? (Doesn't require much intelligence to realize it will) Can you atleast give back 5 armor to the nerfed ones? Why make a new item and instantly nerf it? "Oh the new item can't compare to the current ones, elt's nerf them too!"

planters8 votes

What is frozen heart's new niche anyway? Randuin's old niche was 'generic tanky item' and was switched to 'anti-crit specialist' right? But it still negates the advantages of ADCs attack speed doesn't it? it still feels like frozen heart is outclassed by randuin's just because you can pick up a randuin's which gives both health and armor. More importantly thornmail gives more raw protection. The only niche that I see frozen heart fitting is generic anti AD champions which means that it is going to be worse. maybe not significantly worse depending on the situation, but worse nonetheless.

AtheosisX8 votes

I'm sorry but I never saw those items ever "remove AD threats from the game". I have literally no idea what you are referring to there. AD champs have Last Whisper, Black Cleaver, and Blade of the Ruined King to deal with tanks, along with many champs have specific anti-tank abilities. Besides, stacking lots of armor makes you very vulnerable to AP damage (and shouldn't all AD teams be punished for bad team comp selection?). I just don't get the reasoning you are using here.

Earl Eulrich7 votes

if you had paid a little attention to this game at all over the past years you´d know that tanks donßt scale into the lategame at all already and it´s by no means justifyable to nerf their fullbuild further. If you think tankitems are too gold efficient - alright (though as they usually have to itemize against ad and ap the same time they really need to be somewhat deficient to keep up), but you hvae to make up for that with offering real lategame scaling/slot efficient tankitems finally.

but we already know you don´t care, you just want the assassin vs ad, zed 100%pick/ban meta back for worlds.

Two, these items made it very hard to build other items that had armor on them without completely removing AD threats from the game.

Yeah, but there's this thing called trade-offs that exist. If you invest two inventory slots into item 3110 item 3075 you get no HP or MR and that means you melt to magic damage.

That's like saying item 3031 and item 3046 make it very hard to build other items that had dps on them without completely removing ANY threats from the game.

Also, the CLG game last weekend where Shen had 4 armor items (item 3047 item 3068 item 3143 item 3075 ) and yet couldn't nullify Doublelift's Tristana as a threat from the game (and in fact melted to her all the same) completely invalidates this point.

Are you saying if you wanted to introduce newer armor items they wouldn't be able to compete with item 3110 and item 3075? If so, fair enough that makes sense. So why not just leave their stats the exact same and increase their cost? Wouldn't this be the easiest and best way to fix this problem?

We want items to provide power more contextually, rather than just give out a lot of stats. This allows the same item to be stronger and weaker from game to game, based on comps, who is strong, and how you want to play.

You claim that, and yet you allow damage items (item 3031 item 3046 item 3035 ) to remain universally good for most ADCs in most situations. There isn't some games where like say an ADC would say "actually I don't think I want to buy item 3035)." ADCs don't suddenly stop building damage because of what an enemy champion might happen to build. A tank wants to stack as much survivability as possible just like an ADC wants to stack as much damage as possible. This is a simple concept.

This isn't giving more diversity. A tank is still going to stack ALL of the items (if possible). It's not a matter of "here, you have more strategic options" but more like "I don't want you to be as effective anymore."

That being said, we did hit a lot of tank core items in this patch, and we will be watching if the other compensation buffs (MR buffs and some armor base stat buffs) keep these guys afloat. Totally get that these changes are a lot to cope with in a block like this.

The primary frustrating thing is that this has happened before. In a small window of time, tanks are given viability with some changes in items and then a few patch later are nerfed back into irrelevance. Meanwhile ADCs are in every game will always be viable and are always strong. It's a never-ending cycle of disappointment. Count how many tanks are ACTUALLY being played in the average pro game or average non-pro game. Seriously, count it. The tank meta was problematic back in 5.5 when Cinderhulk first came out and there were like 4-tank team comps. What about now? How are they seriously problematic now?

Why is it whenever tank items are brought up it's like a spin-the-wheel on what bullshit Riot will say next that mysteriously doesn't apply to other classes?

This time it's item space! Yes, only tanks need to worry about item space.

Why not nerf BT? If you ever wanted to add another lifesteal item it'd be hard because of how powerful BT is. Why not nerf IE? It's impossible to make a better crit item than IE. Why not nerf LW/VS? Can't make a penetration item that competes with them, since they'll always be more cost efficiency than Jesus Christ himself. But oh lawdy Frozen Heart is doing what FH has literally always done since it was released, what a design cramper!

Tanks have, UNDENIABLY, the highest diversity in item builds in any class. Yet every single time Riot comes around drunkenly slamming their items it's always item diversity. All the way back to Season 2 when Atma's was nerfed because it was cramping item diversity. Yet APs still have to build the same 3 items every game, and ADCs have exactly 1 item that they can swap out.

Also there's a lot more good damage-item options than good defense-item options. Look how many AP items there are, compare with how many good MR items there are. AD vs armor. %Penetration vs ???

Way more multipliers on the offense-side than the defense side.

damage/dps is a function of (AD or AP) * (crit chance) * (crit damage) * (CDR) * (Attack Speed) * (Penetration) * (Ability Ratios) * (Whatever offensive steroids in kit and masteries)

survivability is a function of (MR or Armor) * HP * (Attack-Speed Debuffs) * (Crit Damage reduction) * (whatever defense steroids in kit and masteries)

I feel a little confused. Right now you are saying that you nerfed item 3075 so it wouldn't be too strong in case it was combined with other armor/tank items. But in the patch notes, it is mentioned that it is now going to be stronger the more tank stats you have.

Wasn't it possible to keep it balanced for bruisers AND tanks at the same time? Was turning it into a scaling item really necessary?

Dr Poro2 votes

The idea is right, but your sense of what's balanced is way off. Armor has to be more efficient that AD because AD gives so much more than just combat. The pushing power it gives is much stronger than the "look i can tank turrets" bonus that armor gives.

Also, what do you mean with "these items made it very hard to build other items that had armor on them without completely removing AD threats from the game. " Building multiple armor items gives diminishing effects. Arpen will make ADs a threat no matter what, especially the ADCs who jsut heal on tanks.

Tik1152 votes

So you want to nerf them because it made it tough to build into other items without removing AD threats? fine, that's fine and justified.....but you didn't add these new Armour items that would remove AD threats.

Dead mans plate was out an entire patch ago and it didn't suddenly kill the AD threats (Hell I rarely see it get bought!), these new items Don't even give Armour so these are not the "+ will remove AD threat entirely" scenario your on about.

Instead what you have done is smacked down the items and left a huge void which no, these new items will NOT fill out that void even slightly.

Why is it that you decided to nerf these items without having an alternative? all that does is hurt an entire role, this will just bring us back to League of Cleaver all over again and you STILL went through with it.

Look I don't wanna act like I know how to balance this game cause I don't but even a dumbass like me can see that these heavy and fast double nerfs cause more problems then fix them

item 3072 outsustain every dps what is lower than 200 and grant a shield because why not

item 3139 very safe protection against cc and delayed burst, also help kiting and gives you lots of ad. After this you are no longer vulnerable against cc meanwhile item 3140 is stupidly, stupidly cheap.

item 3156 You are no longer need to fear from ap damage.

item 3153 It will help you to make hp stacking tnks useless

item 3071 Another tank shredding item because why not. They are not weak enough.
