What's Aatrox going to be?

I'm sure that a lot of you are already aware of this, but Aatrox is getting a rework. Again. Roughly a year after he already got one, and I'm just curious as to what Riot has in store for this guy. With the update he got in patch 7.5, Aatrox finally became meta again (or at least, after several buffs). And I know that a lot of people would disagree with me when I say that he's "meta" but personally, I've had a lot of success with him prior to his update. He may have a few issues, like his E ability being a damn pizza slice and his knock up having a hitbox that's smaller than a grown man's nipple, but a skilled Aatrox player can work around these sorts of things. That said, I hope that they keep some of the current Aatrox's attributes, most notably his passive and his ult, because while Aatrox could certainly be better, I like him the way currently is. With that said, hopefully Riot doesn't pull a Rengar update on him ;~;

As much as I like his focus on sustain, they will probably have to remove it. Aatrox was designed as a draintank, but draintank characters are inherently bad designs.

I had a rework idea a long time ago for Aatrox that worked on the issue of his heal being passive and turned it into an active similar to what they did with Vlad.

why are drain tanks inherently bad designs but every adc in the game gets to stay like they are with more damage than anyone else and there fore more healing than anyone else because the more damage you do the more health you heal with lifesteal but they do it from range unlike any fighter. also Warwick got reworked and i dont think his drain tanking is bad design though i think that how he gets attack speed is bad design (not nessicarily bad design but for how it is balanced yes and how much he obtains yes.)

Drain tanking is a bad design because on champions like Aatrox it becomes a pattern of tanky by building damage, which leads to being too powerful in general. Warwick is pretty fair because his healing only kicks in at below 50%, which is 10% above when Morello kicks in and Executioners is always on.

And yes if an ADC has life steal they can end up healing very quickly but that's if they get life steal and even then, you can burst them down. I've been flanked by assassins before and melted before I can heal up, because yes I heal a lot of I have say Bloodthirster but that doesn't negate having only base resistances against people with high scaling spells.

If they get lifesteal. Adcs have better base resistances and comparable health pools to many bruisers and for bruisers to ever get better than base resistances they have to trade damage and not build defensive items while have a shorter attack range and usually no excapes.

List some bruisers since bruiser is a very loose term not actually recognized. Are you talking about champions like Olaf, Vi, and Irelia? Are don't bruisers get items like Cleaver, Deadmans, Tri, Stareks, and Mallet?

LordGeovanni1 votes

Yes bruisers do get those types of items now because their base defenses are crap without them. in older seasons bruisers may have bought some of those but of bruisers slots were dedicated to pure damage items and 4 damage items was an option. now bruisers will pop faster than any mage or adc going 3 damage items not more steeped in health than ad or 4

Look no further than Warwick formerly attack speed drain tank. now full tank drain tank and squishy if you build him any other way. Except that aatrox is gonna have to either scale off ad and be super shitty cause he too squishy or be super shitty cause he has low flat healing that never increases or worse case scenario have his healing scale with bonus hp.

Aatrox's kit will have to be completely redone. nothing in his kit works very well, and hasn't been for the past how ever many years. The only two ways you will win is if you are extremely good against any top laner (who in comparison to him is much better), or if you aggro super hard and the enemy jungler ignores top.

His passive that lets you "revive" is only good if you have 5 stacks (generally from combat). So if an enemy catches you and bursts you down before you can even get 2 up, may as well ff@5. Additionally, his base stats are pretty weak. He's supposed to be a fighter but too weak to really do damage, and too weak to stay alive for long. You can build some tank on him but most likely at that time you are behind due to having to change build route. You build damage, you get bursted. You build tank, you get bursted a little slower.

Aatrox had too many extremities in his kit for there to make room for any real balance.

Draintank Full Revive passive Aoe + CC + some mobility.

Aatrox should be a great duelist with a "turning the tides" teamfight playstyle. Not the best duelist but in the top 10 at least (having some real room to outplay enemies in 1v1's or even 1vX's.) This actually flows well into the latter style of his kit which should be good at fighting multiple enemies who may already be running low on steam.

Note: I do not believe or have ever beleived Aatrox should be some kind of pseudo support champ with team buffs. This has been some unfair twisted interpretation of Aatrox' lore and I find it a bit unfair to people who where on board with Aatrox' actual and fleshed out design. He was meant to be suicide diver.

For this reason Ive always felt aatrox could use an Executioner style kit. Something that allowed him to perform on the scale of Riven, Garen, or even Darius. Now I know there are mixed labels given to these champs. Darius and Garen are juggernauts while Riven is a skirmisher and Aatrox is a dive fighter. As much as Aatrox' kit screams dive fighter, this implies he should be initiating fights. I don't really think Aarox should be an absolutist in that category. Riven can actually perform as a dive fighter at certain stages of the game if she's ahead. Aatrox should be the same. He should really excel at jumping in a fight that is more chaotic (rather than the standard teamfight at mid where both teams gather and are well prepped). Aatrox should excel the same way Riven does in teamfights which is catching fleeing enemies, executing low healths and just completely taking advantage of mistakes and poor positioning.

Aatrox was designed to jump onto a clutter of enemies and blow all his cooldowns on them and die. He's a suicide diver. This is cool in essence and I myself have thought of various ways to make this possible but doesn't seem to be an easy thing to make.

The reason is because Aatrox has too many glaring weaknesses to balance out the rest of his kit. He is overly susceptible to CC which sticks out like a sore thumb as an easy target. It makes him far less "initiate"-worthy to begin with.

If a suicide diver is still his forte, why not make him more explosive? Literally. Something that happens when he dies to enemies around him. It makes him less appealing as a focus-down target if they enemy team has to take some serious consideration of their teams positioning. That's the best suggestion I could give there.

If he's to be something other than that, I'd suggest a skirmish executioner kinda like Riven. Somebody who can get in and excel in the mix of and perhaps dysfunction of a fight. Otherwise you're just trying to make a whackem bot whos teamfight initiation is worse than every other dive fighters the likes of Renekton and Malphite. He's less tanky than every dive fighter (making him more susceptible to CC) and overall has a rather dull playstyle designed to deliver the same 1-2 punch every time. If he can't do that then he's pretty much not doing a whole lot other than perhaps pushing top lane. (zZzzZ....) He needs more wiggle room. I say drop the revive passive and start building a more skirmish-intensive champion.

Again, the suicide diver is a cool idea. I just don't think it is doing well on aatrox who's meant to be a sword-wielding full-combat-oriented kinda dude. A suicide diver would suit a jungler more or some kinda burst heavy champ (Assassin).
