League needs more item diversity in general, honestly

I used to think it was just support, but honestly...I think League has this issue where there's an item or two where you either live and die by it or you're simply NOT viable.

Ruined King, for example. All possible users of it in the bot lane, like Lucian and Ezreal, are considered strong. Only real adc that doesn't use it while not being weak outright is Cait. When I started playing IE was mandatory on every adc. Then it became pen builds and pen items that dominated the top tier. Now we're here, on Ruined King rushes.

Almost every burst mage jumps on Morello, but now Gunblade is making its rounds.

Supports have a near full inventory of mandatory items now. (Vision + Boots + Locket + Redemption)

Most all fighters take Cleaver.

So on and so forth.

Kind of tired of things being in a state where there's one item that's super busted, and the meta revolves around its abusers. It gets nerfed, and then it's the NEXT thing that sticks out that everyone jumps on at the same time. We're always in this state of jumping from one item to another. Main thing about the support role that's different is that it's ALWAYS FUCKING LOCKET THAT'S BROKEN LIKE HOLY SHI-

Anywho, point is that there's no real sense of there being a real balance of power between items/champions. It's less like "balance" and more like whack-a-mole where Riot just slams the thing that pops up next...unless it's support...then Locket's top tier for 2 years and counting since I started playing.

Dude, for the past like 10 patches they have added more and more items.

Next patch they are adding even more.

Half the issue is that we have too many items that are plain bad or extremely situational.

Omwrecker, Athene's, Zeke's, Frozen Heart, Warmog's...items like these make it seem like we have a lot of items in the game, but they're just wastes of space, although Warmog's MIGHT make a case for itself next patch. Might.

It isn't just about adding new items, although we do need more items. It's also about having useful items.

Well, they are making item quests more of a thing in the next patch. The items may not be "better" but acquiring them is a lot more interactive.

You should really hop on the PBE and look at all of the changes to items they are making.

I honestly don't have to. We're making new quests for items we already take every game. Tada?

SSmotzer1 votes

Actually no. It just gives buffs to pre-existing items. Like adding 200% movement speed to amulet coin, a 350 hp passive shield on Relic Shield, or a burst of speed when hitting an enemy on Spellthief.

...how does that refute the fact that we aren't adding item diversity to the game by adding these quest rewards to things we already take?

SSmotzer1 votes

It doesn't. The fact that they have already added like 6 items this season does. They added some lethality and jungle items during the lethality change and now they are adding tank items for the tank update.

It you want more items paths to take as supports, just wait for the Support update.

because League items are usually dictated by stats and not actives/passives

why would a fighter get anything other than Cleaver when it offers a combination of stats far better than anything else they could afford for the same price point, on top of the unique stuff the item grants in its armor shred and Phage passive

why would you not get IE with the way crit works in League, where there are no diminishing returns for stacking it and you can basically just double your damage output permanently, why not take it to 250%?

I mean, I think it's more of an issue that Riot constantly shoves too much of what one would want onto one item.

Like, why would I pick any other support item when I can get a big aoe shield on Locket or a big aoe heal and the most mana regen in the game on Redemption?

Riot has an issue of making items with way too many pros and not enough cons in a strategy game. Then the strategy is "abuse the best strategy".

Like, even right now, Riot knows marksmen are struggling to make an impact early. Ruined King is now the "early marksman item", so all the good marksmen are either marksmen that abuse this shit or marksmen that play around it. Bloody hell...

marksmen having any say in the game after 1 item is a problem

Support items with singular effects should likely be much stronger than they are if they need to compete with redemption and locket

i would say cleaver should be split up but the state of the game requires them to be this way

The upcoming cleaver nerf should make it about right. Its bruiser rival, trinity force, is also still solid on its own champs.

Yes, support itemization has been mandatory and supports poor since the role was invented. If we could get rid of sightstone and just buff trinkets appropriately, at least one item would actually fall off that mandatory list (and we could invent a cool second pathway item upgrade for each of the support gold items).

The new items and changes coming with the tank rework should give further choice and build diversity, though it does seem that this will lead to heavy bonus's for true damage champs (more resistances, less hp).

Yeah, and so many people are meta slaves it sucks.

Kind of have to be given the game state. There's not enough variety to justify alternative ways to do things. Even if you find a way, people whine until it's nerfed.

Remember when people used to be PROUD about playing shit like Malz support? Minute it catches on? BAM, whole boards can't get him out of there fast enough.
