Well I will correct you if you're wrong, in that companies do test ideas but you're confusing drastic innovation with tweaking. They had one system for a long time, so they decided to see if the next would work. People are adverse to change, they're comfortable in their learned environment. So, Riot did disable SQ purely to populate DQ, this is true. Was it a dick move? Yes. Necessary? Yes. To accurately gather data, you need a proper sample. If everyone is playing it, they can truly observe the system since everyone has to use it. You need to think about this scientifically and statistically rather than "Customer is always right". They knew DQ wouldn't be like SQ in popularity. Anything but SQ wouldn't have SQ's popularity. There is -nothing- they could have created that would overtake SQ quickly. So, disable SQ and gather data on DQ. See what it's good at and where it fails. Millions on millions of samples. How does the game run, how is the match making, how is the lobby, how are the reactions? How is the overall satisfaction of people receiving their preferred roles more? None of this can simply be determined accurately on small samples.
And people didn't start off by saying it was shit. Here's exactly how it went:
-More and more players began entering the League scene as seasons went on, one big complaint: Pick order.
-Unfair that you had a good to fair chance to get a bad role, plus people locked and trolled anyways.
-People wanted their roles more.
-Team builder came out, allowing you to pick your champ, role and play with others. Aside from terrible search times (Unless you sup), the idea was great.
-But, team builder was treated as a featured mode and not a real thing.
-Introduce DQ, which is team builder tweaked. Roles assigned so less arguments of who gets what, no longer complete RNG.
-Remove SQ to properly get data on DQ.
-Once properly analyzed, SQ reinstated and DQ renamed to clear some of the bad blood around it. Now known as flex.
-Now players have a choice. Dynamic Queue or Solo Queue. Everyone wins. Literally, everyone (Except dominion players)
-After the tests, League is better for it. Wider range of queue types, different divisions for each. It's great.
You need to really analyze the why. Testing and introducing content to games isn't easy, and the process isn't acceptable for everyone. Personally DQ was the same for me. My queue times were average, I blamed myself for losses and not match making, and I climbed. Solo Queue, Dynamic Queue, Duo Queue, Flex Queue; it's just semantics for me. Only 5 man ever was different. For many, they used DQ as a scapegoat for their own inability to progress in rank. Doing poorly, new DQ is up, many are complaining...perfect! It's shitty DQ's fault that I'm doing poorly!
Not the case. Skill has always been at the forefront of progress in League. A lot of DQ's complaints were irrational. But, I'm not saying it had no influence on games either. It definitely had some wonky match making.
Kog is wildly different from Morde and Malz. They aren't on even remotely the same spectrum. Kog's rework gave him his powerspike on first item and he only scaled from there. He had no debilitating early or mid game, he was simply doing too much on-hit damage. He'd shred tanks, squishies, anyone in about the same amount of time. He actually broke the game and ruined the experience for players in such a simplistic form that the outcry was hard enough for Riot to revert it. He hit W and right clicked and melted an entire team. Even Twitch needed to build up some items and have his ult before that was possible. Kog'maw had to be deleted at the very beginning of any fight or the fight was instantly over.
Morde was powerful, permabanned, nerfed and now he's where he is. A niche pick. Picking him doesn't take away from the LoL experience. It doesn't break games. Is his rework doing well? No. Is it revert worthy? No. Neither is Malzahar. They changed the power in his kit, and his role has shifted, but he doesn't break the game. He is certainly stronger than most supports bot lane, but he is not anywhere near what Kogmaw was. Kogmaw was just entirely unhealthy for the game, such as DFG and Zhonyas ring.
The assholes that say ignore boards may mean that or may mean to not use them for balance, which I believe in. The demographic of boards isn't representative of the sample group they use to balance, which is plat+. They have boards for a reason and they make posts here, so obviously they use boards. But it's when people use boards as data or evidence in arguments that the assholes get angry and, rightfully so, say ignore boards. Let's make this clear. Boards is not a talking point for balance. It can be supporting evidence to existing evidence, but it cannot be the main source of information. You can't say "Everyone on boards is saying Xin zhao is OP, but Riot just wants $kin$" and be taken seriously (Ignore the latter half of that, it was condescending mainly because so many posts actually use that argument so it's almost not even satire at this point). However, if Plat+ stats show xin zhao being broken, pros admit it and use it, streamers are talking about it, then yes, bringing in the boards works fine. That's fine supporting evidence to the main channel you drew your original evidence from.
Now, calling Riot incompetent is strange to me. It's the one argument that I don't understand how anyone could make. Incompetency implies a shit game, shit development and an unhappy playerbase that would be reflected in decreasing profits, playerbase and negative news all around. Yet somehow, playerbase has been increasing, their profits haven't come close to going negative. They, by definition really, can't be incompetent. They balance well, set up a nice game and do well staying connected with their players. Of the 130+ champions, almost all of them are decently playable. Maybe not Top tier meta, but they're playable. There is only a small handful of champions that are either unplayable or broken. Very small. And what do they do? They fix them. They turned Sion from a shitty, niche pick to a great front line. They turned Poppy from a forgotten paint splatter on the screen to one of the most meta champions League has ever seen. Viktor, Sona, Soraka, Xerath, Brand, Cass, Taric, etc. Lots of great reworks on what were failing or broken champions. Many more to come. Aatrox, Galio, etc. They are trying. I know you care for results, but that's an ignorant way to look at this. You want results for a product you do nothing for. You're not purchasing Riot stocks, you're not investing in their success. All you do at most is buy skins. You're not gaining anything from Riot, necessarily. They do produce results, but results take time, effort and most importantly, failure. It's easy to look at the bad and not the good. Take all your bad academic grades and line them up. Looking at that, you're a shit kid. Dumb as hell, going nowhere in life, right? Results show so. Now take your good grades and line them up. Usually, there's a lot more good than bad and suddenly, all that spiel about those bad grades means nothing because it isn't true.
Same for Riot. Yeah, Kog was a fuck up. Yeah, forcing DQ made a lot unhappy. Yeah, flex was infuriating. Yes, we wish Lee sin wasn't the jungle meta for most of League's history. And yeah, we all fucking hate creep block.
But...I love the champions, I love the map. I love the artwork. I love the music. I love the competition. I love the constant balancing patches. I love the esports. I love the thrill of getting a kill. I love the victory screen. I love backdooring an inhib. I love taking a tower. I love sniping a dragon. I love it all. There's so much more positivity in League than negativity. To call them incompetent simply isn't sensical. They've built an amazing game, completely taking charge of an entire genre and make huge sales. Their game is completely free to play and so simple to pick up yet hard to master. You can't beat the game, and honestly, you can't master it for most of us. It keeps you playing and trying because there's higher levels to hit.
On your words about CertainlyT, yes. He can be an asshat. Although his arrogance did come from a bit of base, in that he has created some amazing champions (Thresh). But, he does need to take input a bit more. But hey, that's not Riot. That's an individual working for Riot. And it's not like he releases utter trash either. Otherwise, Riot simply fires him.
