Can we look into doing something ranked sometime in the near future?
Look... I know threads like this are written everyday and have been for years. It is a subject Riot is consistently silent on. Maybe its because they don't see ranked and match making as a problem, maybe there is nothing they can do, or maybe they just don't want to spend resources on. Now... I honestly don't have the solution(s) but can Riot please just acknowledge there is a problem? Maybe others feel differently but.... I just see so many 1 sided games this seasons I basically expect it at this point. I am not even sure anymore if it's an elo thing or not.
I know low elo is a very large part of the player base so it makes sense there is a large variance in skill discrepancy. But right now the game needs new layers to deciding skill than just straight wins/losses and mmr. No you can't use the grading system because there are too many flaws. Hell maybe there is nothing you can do but I feel like there has to be something if anything that can be done to make games more even.
Its just.... so frustrating seeing 1-2 people under perform almost every game making games 1 sided. Think of how many more evenly fun matched games there would be if people didn't have that 1 0-10 person on their team. Now I get it. People have bad games. But there are those people who know how to play from behind and those that don't. Or those that know all their match ups and those that don't. Honestly I don't really know what to say about it except it just seems like there are so many games where you ask yourself "how is that person the same rank as everyone else in this game?" And that just seems messed up.
Now one reason this happens in low elo is new players paying placement games. Starting mmr of new accounts I believe is roughly at the 50% of players mark (usually around silver 3). For quick learners, experienced players who don't play a lot of ranked, or just higher rank smurfs this is not a problem as they can compete here. Hell you probably don't even notice them. But when actual new players who are very inexperienced jump into ranked this becomes a huge problem. The games become 1 sided stomps because this player or players are so much less experienced than those around them. This makes for a very poor ranked experience for them along with others in game. Now I know there is no perfect solution to this but..... denying you can't fix this issue a little is a lie.
I think rank resets are also a problem each year. I really don't like this ranked system and placement system because of how inconsistent and how much it varies throughout the year. I get this a moba game so the ranked system and placements needs to be different than other styles of games but right now League's system is all over the board. Here's a really shitty example. In Diablo 3 they have "seasons" where everyone starts over a new character. The nice thing about the start of the season is you know everyone starts with a clean slate and is 0 items level 1. Well obviously a complete reset doesn't work in League since players have different skill levels and its a competitive game and a complete reset would ruined ranked. Hell... pretty sure they basically did that with flex queue at the start of the season and you had challenger players being matched with bronze/silver players and it was a shit show. So I know a full reset is not the answer, but what I am saying is don't reset some players so much harder than others unless you add another variable or two to the process.
There is no lie ranking up in this game takes awhile and your expected to play many games to reach your "actual" rank. You are also supposed to play 1 main role with a secondary which naturally means 1-2 champs in each role so many 3-4 champs total. The problem with doing this is... although this shows how good someone is at the game within a certain role and very limited champion pool it really discredits a lot more about the game and overall knowledge of players. Its good for high elo I think because its so damn hard to learn everything and all match ups for 1 role and a couple champions so its probably best for high elo if ranked is this way. But in low elo I am not sure if it really helps or hurts more. Honestly for a player like me who has played forever... it really hurts my experience. I may not excel at any role or champs at a super high level but I do have decent overall game knowledge in most roles. I find it really frustrating when I play with new players who may be good at 1 thing but are completely less skilled in other roles or champs. So if their 1 champ gets banned or they get auto filled... not only do they do poorly but they do EXTREMELY poorly. I think its weird/funny because we all make so many mistakes since its low elo that I just don't understand how someone can be that less skilled and same rank as me as the other players. But when you take into account they may just be auto filled and only know 1-2 roles and don't have multiple years of experience like me you say "o.... well I guess that make sense then". But... even if it makes sense it doesn't make the games fun. I am not really sure what the answer is here I just think this whole pick a role + auto fill is really adding a new layer of problems to league even in low elo. Not even pick a role that is needed just autofill I guess.
Hell I saw it last season with one of my friends. Dude has hardly played since season 4, basically skipped season 5. Plays season 6 does ok in placements but since it was so late into the season he gets into gold. Now as someone who spent many hours earlier in the season grinding away it feels a little shitty seeing someone super rusty at the game get placed where you used to be but had to spend 150-200 games to get back to because you decided to play the game at the start of the season instead of waiting to do placements at the end. This buddy went on to spam support and honestly was rocking some
&
. I know I am low elo so I never see good
players and compared to high elo I am sure my buddy not that great but holy hell... for low elo he is/was pretty good at
. He made his way to plat 5, which honestly was really cool. But this where two problems arise that I am talking about. 1. He made it to plat playing support with 1-2 champs. He is very rusty at every other role and even in game knowledge. With all the reworks and item changes he didn't really know what most champs in games did anymore. So now you take that player who has plat 5 (think his mmr was more like plat 3-4 at the end of the season) and you throw them into another role with autofill or by choice and then you get problems. Now I played 3v3 with him... 5v5 norms and holy hell was he bad in any other role and with other champs. He just so rusty in playing the game that he just would need to spend a good chunk of time even getting to mid gold level with other roles champs. So in norms or 3v3 or just whatever if he wasn't playing support he would get destroyed by like mid silver players. Which I found funny because even though I wasn't plat I never really found most those players difficult to play against. On top of this, the only reason he admitted to even playing was because he started the season in gold. So now you have him being placed in gold with basically what I will call an mmr buff since you get so much bonus lp gains at the start of the season. So not only was he able to play with on avg more consistent higher rank players than you will see in silver he also got 25+ lp per win and only lost like 15 to start. Now I don't know about you but I think that would really have motivated me to keep playing too especially since there was only 5-6 weeks left of the season at that time. It also made for a fun duoing experience since we both were about the same rank. Well until I got to gold 2 and he was close to plat and then I told him to just go solo. I was holding him back and I knew it.... it as fun but I was getting outplayed trying to play adc and even my main role jungle I was getting outclassed more games than not. There was nothing wrong with It I just was under skilled and needed to learn more. So I am not saying my buddy didn't deserve plat, just that is was "top 10% of players" in 1 role with a couple champs, but severely under skilled in comparison when he was trying to play other roles. And this I think it what you start seeing in higher elos when people complain about auto filled teammates.
I don't know what the solutions are, I just wish Riot would admit there are problems. I have played a good number of ranked games the last 2-3 weeks and the number of 1 sided stomps is astounding. You would think "well low elo its all a shit show". Which is true but... like.... its hard to describe. 1-2 people on each team you can tell know somewhat what their doing or have different layers of game knowledge. Meanwhile others just might know how to lane well or maybe idk... play around objectives. But the overall skill knowledge is so different that games get out of hand quick and sometimes are hard to approach because you don't know what to expect from anyone. If your good enough you just basically try to 1v9 consistently.
I am not saying I or anyone else should be higher ranks just that maybe there is a way to add another variable or two to judge one's skill knowledge that allows more experienced players to play with more experienced players more often. I know there will be one sided games and one sided stomps. I just don't see why a majority of games need to be this way.
