Can someone explain to me why the Mordekaiser W changes are a big nerf?

OK, I'll admit it, I've posted a large number of highly ranty posts about Mordekaiser. To be honest, I probably haven't played enough League lately to really justify doing that, but whatever.

When I first read the Mordekaiser W changes, it didn't seem like a big nerf to me. Sure, being able to self-cast doesn't help duo Morde in the way it helps solo Morde, but it certainly helps him somewhat, and the base damage is higher. But, I've seen a fair number of people indicating that it's a bigger deal than I thought it was.

So I wanted to put out this post to ask, can someone explain to me what exactly makes these changes such a big nerf? I may honestly sleep better tonight given that knowledge.

EDIT: Holy crap I'm an idiot. I didn't realize that W didn't deal damage if there wasn't a nearby ally. RIP myself.

It also has a health cost now.

It nets a 10 to 20 heal against minions, from a 50 to 130 heal, and its damaged it reduced considerably (The DoT is halved, the ending damage was actually slightly increased).

I'm copy pastaing some stuff I wrote earlier

Firstly, why his W should have been nerfed (and is), and not his q, and why his e should suck -

"I'm sorry, but W is quite frankly too strong now (on live, its pretty damn weak on PBE), and his E is pretty worthless. Maxing W first in a duo lane is your best bet the majority of the time, although q is good with a ranged support with hard to land but devastating CC (Like Morgana).

His W's base damage is pretty insane - up to 380 at level 1, 860 level 5. Its scaling sucks, which is why you want to max it first - Q's base is low, but the scaling is awesome, so its not that impactful until you have an item or two. If its ranked 5 was better than it currently is, you'd still be rushing for it.

E's innate scaling is quite honestly crap, it's ratio's are low and its base is pathetic, although it is total AD which partially makes up for that. Having his E much stronger though wouldn't be healthy either - his range/ lack of poke SHOULD be his largest weakness against a ranged champion, and negating that ruins his counterplay."

And what they did to him In (Under a post on PBE I named My god Riot does not like Mordekaiser's w. More like "Sharecropper of Mild Disappointment") -

"They Halved its DoT damage (cause you can't double it in the overlap), gave it a hp cost of 25-65, reduced the healing on minions to a net of 10 at level 1 (not even enough to compensate for his shitty regen) and 20 at level 5 from 50 to 130, and made the MS based off how directly you are running towards your ally. (which is an awesome change I'd like to see on all directional MS boosts, like Vayne's, Janna's, and Glory.)

Sure you can self cast it now for the minuscule heal, but that doesn't compensate for its now lackluster use outside of lane, much less that removal of 4.88 base armor. He is pretty amazing at sustaining in jungle though, as its not reduced vs monsters.

I guess maxing Q is the only way to go now."
