@Reds Does Ekko really HAVE to be an assassin?

So why is Riot forcing Ekko to be an assassin as opposed to a Slayer or skirmishing fighter ala Riven FioraKled ?

when I look at his splash or lore or his reveal trailer I dont really think "WHOA this guy is one lethal dude!"; I get more of a "never back down" underdog hero vibe so why not have his kit reflect that side of him?

Was this chosen because its the only consistent/viable playstyle that he's ever had aside from tank Ekko and tank Ekko cant be allowed exist? Why not simply try slotting him into a different class like a disruptive AP fighter ? In terms of what assassins bring to the table I just dont see any real reason in particular to add him to a team comp outside of him being a comfort pick. Katarina has the cleanup and AOE Zed is the "we really need this one guy in particular dead" and boast the highest single target damage Khazix Rengar are the kings of the Jungle Talon is the master of roaming Akali has the most sticking power

It just seems that Ekko lacks consistency and reliability that can be found in other assassins and there doesnt really seem to be a very special niche that he explicitly fulfills. Fizz in my opinion is a much better choice of an AP assassin who is arguably just as good @ initiating and has alot of damage. I think that if his current live PBE update goes through he wont really be living up to his character potential and might have to be revisited. The problem lies within his kit not the numbers. Everything just compliments him being a disruptive fighter rather than some sort of all in assassin Like sure the whole chronobreak one-shot thingy but at higher levels you will almost never land it due to how hilariously easy it is to play around and its really something thats starting to feel almost parasitic as though the rest of the kit must be toned down and molded around this one potentially hard hitting skill.

This is just my 2cents and I dont really main Ekko but I have played him a bit so feel free to disagree but Im just really puzzled as to why Ekko absolutely HAS to be this "utility assassin" fantasy that Riots trying to make a reality. He feels like hes a champion thats trying to be forced to do A when he excels at doing B so much better but instead of modifying him around his strengths Riot is repeatedly slapping him on wrist and trying to FORCE him to be good at doing A.

I agree that Ekko works better as a skirmisher.

The only thing I see him is that Ekko should either:

A) Have high AP & squishy at the same time. B) Have high HP for defenses, but hurts like a fly.

Current Tank Ekko doesn't have both of those. He just happens to have high HP & damage at the same time for no reason, hence the slow removal from passive & more AP base boost.

Because if Riot decides to make Ekko an AP skirmisher and balance him that way, they need to make AP skirmishing items.

That would likely involve changing Lich Bane to be a more defensive, less bursty item that can keep Ekko in the mix, and probably draw Diana and Elise into it as well.

It's just a lot of work. Better to balance him as an assassin for now. An assassin who can't kill people.

Dare I ask what an AP skirmisher should actually look like? Historically speaking, most skirmishers were called Melee ADCs, with a strong DPS focus. Yet most AP won't fit that bill because they are not AA dependent. The only Caster AD skirmisher that OP mentioned was Riven, and she relies mostly on CDR and penetration. (do we really want an AP version of BC?) But even if your skirmisher was built around Lich bane, I don't even think it would need to be more defensive. (unless your implying it should be less offensive) Since you can easily go Lich bane, and a couple of defensive items. But again (like riven) perhaps the best option would be to give Ekko more defenses, that scaled with offensive power. (you know, how his w shield and ult heal scale with AP)

You also mentioned Diana, a Champ I feel falls very close to ekko is many respects. (And has some of the same draw backs) Which begs the question, why are they struggling, where other AP assassins like Kass and Le'blanc arn't? (I think their's more to it that just Assassin vs. skirmisher.) Personally, I think it's the magier kit, they become less reliant on 100-0ing people, since they have wave clear to keep up with their opponents, AND they could preliminary poke down their opponents. (mainly le'balnc can) before doing a finishing blow.

I bring this up, because it was Ekko on Release. Sure people complained about it, but they complained about him doing the job he was meant to do. What did Riot do? They nerfed those magier aspects. Which was the only fall back an AP assassin had if they didn't snowball. Riot later decided to compensate for it with Reduced mana costs. As a result, Ekko wasn't reliant on mana itemization, and it paved the way for his Bruiser build.
