Why is Silver the Default MMR?

When I first started the game in Season 6, I jumped into my placements too early and got Bronze 3 (I lost 6 of them). With a LOT of hard work, I finally got to Silver 2 after 2 years. I'm not good, and I don't put much effort into becoming good, but it was an achievement for me nontheless.

What I hate now, is for whatever reason, riot has made the default MMR as Silver 2 now. My friend who joined the game Last Month lost EIGHT of her placements and only won two, and got placed in Silver 4.

This is unfair for 2 reasons:

  1. Silver elo now has a mix of people who genuinely are okay at the game, AND people who are completely new and can't even hit 15cs in 20 minutes. Games in this elo are now being decided by which team has more of these wrongly-placed silvers.

  2. It's unfair for those who worked hard to get to high silver, only to see people getting placed in the same elo as them for only winning 2 games.

Riot please make the default MMR bronze again, unless the person won 6-10 of their promos. I shouldn't have a 10% winrate nunu player in my Silver 1 Promos.

In my opinion all new accounts (Smurf or not) should start in Bronze 5 by default.

If you're a smurf, you'll be able to climb out with ease!

Yep, I agree with this. I'm only Silver and I had no problems climbing from B5 to Silver last two seasons.

Why the default MMR is 1200 is because the playerbase averages out such that half of the players in the game are below that MMR and half of them are above that MMR.

That being said, in the ranked changes for next season, a lot of clarity is being added to explain why you got the rank you were given. The first 5 games of placements are also vastly more important than the second 5. If you're doing your first placements ever and you lose the first 5, the most you can get is bronze 3 I think. Possibly even lower.

I think Silver V as a default rank is okay, but I think it'd be better if they started at 0 LP and the first loss that incurs drops them to Bronze I.

In the long run players who want to climb can, and when they do then they can make use of the anti-division drop mechanic for when they reach Silver V again.

bronze is the skill level below the average player, while gold is the skill level above the average player, meaning silver is the average player skill level

While that is true you have to take into account that Riot reduced the XP required to hit level 30 a while ago.

A new lvl 30 has the experience of an old lvl 15-20. So silver shouldn't be the default MMR to start from when you go into your first placements.

It still takes hundreds of games to get to 30.

not hundreds, but a good amount

I don't agree with this. I've been an above average player for years. My kda, cs, and map awareness is above average and im still silver. fight me

your in silver promos... not silver. you have a 48% win rate, you average below 5 cs a minute which isn't anything to brag about, and your kill participation is far below average. try going into practice tool and sitting in a lane farming for 5 or 10 minutes each day, you will improve, also try using your tp to get into a fight, instead of always using it to get back to lane. just trying to help...

"Wrongly placed Silvers" nope. Silver players are Silver players. Bronze players get weeded out in placements.

What is it with all these people with the "Silver is the average rank" argument. While that is true, if you were brand new to playing Chess would you expect to be thrown in a tournament vs against the average skill level player (likely people that have been in dozens of tournaments and played Chess for many years) or in the beginner bracket? The VAST majority of new players that I see in mid Silver games are WAY worse than the average mid Silver player.

It sucks for the people trying in Silver to have a brand new player with a 30% win rate...and it sucks for new players that are frustrated because they cannot compete and have to feed for 30 games before dropping to low Bronze.

How the ranking system works is a little bit confusing.

I went 8-2 in flex and was placed in gold 3. I was bronze 2 in flex the previous season.
