To people who are complaining that Veigar wasn't popular before and so he can't be overpowered now:

Let's take Poppy as an example. Imagine if Riot decided to significantly buff Poppy without fixing any of her kit's basic design issues. She'd suddenly be incredibly overpowered, just because her kit isn't well designed.

Veigar is basically the same thing because of his ultimate. It doesn't matter how you slice it, an ability that instantly kills an opponent unless they choose to itemize in a way that makes their champion completely useless, is not ever going to be balanced. Veigar's ult needs a full rework, and until then he shouldn't be allowed to be strong.

And no, he wasn't stronger before his mini-rework. His laning phase is much safer now, he farms AP much more effectively, and his W is actually a reasonably reliable ability after the buffs last patch.

If you allow him to farm up enough ap to one-shot anyone, then quite frankly, you deserve to lose. It's been his thing ever since he was first released.

Good positioning is key due to his short ranges

If he's behind, he'll oneshot your midlaner as soon as he finishes Deathcap since they're ahead.

It's nearly impossible to prevent him from farming now, because of the increased range on his Q. Unless you're doing well enough to literally kill him every time he shows up in lane, he'll get the AP he needs.

The fact that it's been his "thing" doesn't matter. His "thing" isn't something that should exist in this game, just like how Poppy's "thing" is being able to 1v5 reliably.

He has incredibly short ranges and is countered by nearly all AD mids and assassins.

If you take an AP mid against him and manage to get caught in his immensely telegraphed combo, then you can avoid his ult with Zhonyas pretty easily.

He has so much counterplay it's not even funny

He doesn't have incredibly short ranges, that hasn't been true since the mini rework he got. That's the entire point: you cannot prevent him from farming because his Q has 950 range. If 950 range is "incredibly short", I'd like to see what word you use to describe Ahri's 800 range Q.

There's a damn reason that the people defending him either main him or are low elo. I don't know a single high elo player who thinks he's balanced and doesn't main him.

I'm not talking about his Q -- that's a different animal but it can be avoided by positioning behind creeps. I was referring to his ult, which you were complaining about.

I'm talking about his entire kit. He oneshots people with his ult reliably, because it's nearly impossible to deny him stacks.

Think of it this way, we could make it a skill shot and give it more range and damage.

That would be a start, but honestly the amount of damage the ability does just isn't remotely balanced. It's a much better idea to just come up with something interesting that's actually interesting to play as and against.

Dude, his ult is the same for the last 5 years, it is perfectly fine, if YOU CHOOSE so buy full ap, without a slice of mr or health, then stop qq when you die. You are building Zhonyas against zed to or? Or against AD top armor but for mid is unreasonable? jeah...
