Why don't we just have an AP jungle item return 20% of damage dealt to monsters as mana

or is that too abusable?

Off the top of my head jungle KarthusChogath might abuse this a bit given their high mana costs, but idk. Runeglaive just looks like a mess to balance and on pbe looks like item 3100 v2 , now with a gimmick and less damage

Because nobody wants Spirit Stone junglers back.

Why not? And the jg items already give health/mana per second for being in combat. This just helps the mages with added mana sustain

Because if you were around when Spirit Stone junglers were a thing, it just rewarded junglers with high damage, and meant that tanky or bruiserish junglers could go get fukt.

Besides, nobody wants to see a Karthus clearing the jungle and being at full mana afterwards.

Fiddlesticks would never have to leave the jungle.

Does he anyway?

You can run out of mana if you don't have blue buff.

That's about it though.

Admittedly, I haven't played him since they changed Magus into Runeglaive, so that may be a thing of the past for all I know.

20% of damage dealt to monsters as mana probably isn't that great.

It really only helps those that can repeatedly spam their abilities for strong benefit (eg. Evelynn or Karthus ), can get a lot of value out one or two abilities (eg. Fiddlesticks ) or those that can use damaging abilities for no mana cost but use mana (Nidalee ). It helps those that are already strong in the jungle.

That's why I like the mana regen portion of Runeglaive's passive so much. It gives mana sustain sufficient for the jungle on a need-by-need basis based on mana costs and cooldowns, and this passive doesn't do that nearly as well.

Is Runeglaive good for jungler diversity? Absolutely not, but it's not the fault of the mana regen portion of the passive. It just needs the sheen passive removed, a new passive that keeps the mana regen either the same or expanded to support other playstyles, and better stats to compensate for the loss of the Sheen passive.
