playing against illaoi. you know why? because they're programmed to walk in the opposite direction of people doing a lot of damage. they don't overthink it when illaoi hits an ultimate. they just leave.

it's really that simple.

I've watched that at least 30 times, not even joking. Also watched Sonic Adventure DX from start to finish (Minus the Knuckles part because Arin is incompetent at basic treasure-hunting) at least twice.

I read the title and just automatically assumed you were going to say warding.

RisenDarkKnight2 votes

Well they are better at warding now since they can buy green wards and we can't haha

But but, Illaoi is over there! I MUST GO FOR THE KILL!

Spacesuit Spiff26 votes

I once saw a sivir try to "pick" a morde by ulting and running into his melee range. Exploded instantly. Cant imagine what these people will accomplish vs illaoi

lots of bad things....there is one good thing however. it'll make for some good tentacle porn.

Yea, people don't realize just how important that ult is for her burst in a fight. Without her ult the only way she can get anything resembling burst out in a fight is a very luck driven triple hit combo where she is standing next to a tentacle, and the enemy is coming strait at her + tentacle, and she lands EQW(on champ, not spirit) for 3 hits of her tentacle on both them and the spirit.

Seriously, there are two major actions against Illaoi you can't do against her without just giving her free gold.

1v2/3 her in lane post 6 as melees. Seriously, very stupid move. Her kit rewards her for having enemies around, fewer enemies means she does less damage. Bonus points to her if you guys are retarded enough to fight her when she has like 3 tentacles around her and has already marked one of you as vessels.

Let her build up her nest of tentacles freely. Kill the damn things as they spawn if you can afford to. Don't just let her spend her level 1 sitting in lane building up 3-4 tentacles that just give her dominance at level 2. If she is building up a nest and you can't contest her about it, at the very least don't follow her into the damned thing to fight her. Drag her out of her comfort zone (Her tentacle nest) and she loses a LOT of power.

If you do have to fight her, and she has ult, try to fight her in the middle of a lane/open area, where she has no nearby walls. If she ults, without a wall it tends to land the newly spawned tentacles outside of it's radius very heavily, more than enough to not be a threat in the fight unless you run to it. This can provide a degree of safety.

I agree with everything you've said except for this one. That ult seems to ignore the normal rules for where tentacles will spawn, which is really the thing that makes it so dangerous with her kit.

bookwormpete2 votes

Another thing that helps is to get in the habit of killing all the tentacles that she leaves behind whenever she moves to another area. Like you said, letting her build that nest is how you lose against her, so if she sieges your turret and is killed or driven back, make sure that you kill all of the tentacles she left behind before leaving. You get gold, and you reset her foothold in that area.

The Governer2 votes

I agree with all of your points except

If she ults, without a wall it tends to land the newly spawned tentacles outside of it's radius very heavily, more than enough to not be a threat in the fight unless you run to it. This can provide a degree of safety.

The tentacles spawned by her ultimate ignore the rules of her passive, so they can spawn anywhere inside the ultimate range.

Steelflame1 votes

Yes, they can. They also can spawn in some random location somewhat close by. They are horridly inconsistant when spawned by her ult, and often enough I run into times where my ult spawns a tentacle that is so far away as that I can't trigger it with my W on the target who spawned it when I am running strait at them.

EcchiOtakuTM6 votes

Actually I found that during her ulti and w if she goes into the air and you instant CC her it negates both can puts them on full CD, if a highly skilled player were to abuse this illaoi will become more less than before.

She does have damage i'm not going to lie about that but her flaws are too easy to abuse

I suggest http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/16saqRzt-riot-illaoi

darkmatchwaldo1 votes

My duo buddy who plays Thresh managed to hook her mid animation, cancel the ult, and drag her into turret range where she got cc'd by our other team mates. It was such a beautiful play it made me want to cry item 3070

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Yep I can see such things happening to her. Always I will admit she has damage yes, but again the flaws to her kit are just too much she's litterally one of the easiest champs to counterplay which I don't hate at all but it's ruining her the more people get use to her.

darkmatchwaldo1 votes

She's just like the other juggernauts Garen Darius Mordekaiser

Like yes of course if you just let her walk up to you and use her skills she's gonna destroy you. Meanwhile she has literally zero mobility and can be kited to all hell.

But this community doesn't bother trying to counterbuild/counterplay/counterpick them and then complains they're "OP"

It's the same thing with any hyper mobile champ Zed Leblanc Riven Yasuo

instead of playing things that are good against them Annie Malzahar Lissandra

they pick immobile squishy champs without reliable CC and get destroyed, then complain that the champions DESIGNED to beat them are too strong.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Nah even if she walks up to you that's the thing you can still destroy her, Move to avoid all damage and she instantly dies to a good adc.

This community is actually getting better and better i'm noticing with dealing with illaoi they just stop her from using w/ulti in the first place even if she does grevious wound and cc will stop her damage. Plus she's the easiest champ in the game to gank as long as you know how to move.

BioticBrony5 votes

I once heard a Lee Sin complain about illaoi being too powerful when he has enough mobility and cc to screw over her. I laughed really hard at that.

Reaper Soraka5 votes

But she has cooldowns, right? So I'll just go in under her tentacles when she's on cooldown.

maikokk2 votes

not really. unless you are yasuo you dont really have a way to take advantage of her very short window of w being down. just dont even think about getting close to an area where illoia+ tentacles are both sitting unless you are hyper-mobile.

that said, she is incredibly easy to counter. dont push. poke and harass. CS. pretend she is nasus. if she leaves a tentacle to plant a new one... kill the one she left. i play her mid lane because its full of champs that push lanes. most top laners are content with farmville, and Illaoi hates farmeville

Reaper Soraka4 votes

I thought the part about going under the tentacles instead of killing them would make me sound sarcastic. :P

maikokk4 votes

its not you, its me. im bad at internet sarcasm :3

TeCoolMage1 votes

You shouldn't go farmville ever when playing against nasus... You tear him a new one when he goes to CS instead because 0/0/0 isn't going to stay that way for long when a Q deals 1.2k damage

maikokk1 votes

the point was you dont push against him, and you dont get near him if he is close to home (unless you are 100% sure that a wither doesn't matter) you harass him when he goes to farm... or "tear him a new one" if you are capable of doing so. its exactly how you deal with her too.

ahferroin71 votes

Other strategy to counter her: Play Heimerdinger The turrets auto-target the tentacles, but the tentacles only attack when Illaoi does, so you end up forcing her out of lane.

maikokk1 votes

i played her vs heim mid lane. it would probably work better for heim top, but it was way too easy to freeze lane in front of my turret and keep tents out of reach for him by clearing aggressive turrets with q

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

I mean her w does have a 6 second cooldown early. So you probably do have plenty of time to kill them pre-6 if she uses her w.

Auroramancer2 votes

Exactly. Nobody is forcing you to stand in Illaoi's ult when it's just her.

Nunya Bezwacks1 votes

No she just forces your soul to do so.

Auroramancer1 votes

Which...isn't going to kill you on its own. Not even close.

Criomhthann2 votes

Teammate: Yo, let's tower-dive Illaoi.

Me: She's at half HP, I'm at half HP, you are at half HP, and she has ult. Let's not.

Teammate: WE'RE GOING!

Me: Why am I following you?

An enemy has been slain. You have been slain. Enemy double kill.

Teammate: ...

Me: Well memed.

Gotta play a mini game with Nautilus that has 0.67 attack speed. Three tentacles, how long could it take?

The entire passive duration later

. . .

The Loveless1 votes

Takes 2 shots to kill active tentacles

Photos of Ghosts2 votes

During ult they're untargetable.

Nunya Bezwacks1 votes

those are also different from the ones that summon automatically.

Photos of Ghosts1 votes

Actually all tentacles in the area become untargetable, and they go back to targetable at the end of the ult, while the extra ones per champion disappear at th end of the ult.

Alëk1 votes

In my opinion if you want to beat her in lane. PIck someone who has a good dueling power in lane phase and some sustain. So pretty much Swain, Renekton, Aatrox, Xin Zhao, and trundle. Other options are just pick a tanky champ like shen etc. and she just won't be able to kill you.

RyzeRework2 votes

Its only the champions that go into her die. Just passively farm and play the team card game xause everyone knows illaoi is ass at teamfighting

Vikíng1 votes

"ass at teamfighting"

Have you seen her ult?

RyzeRework1 votes

She's gamna walk in between your tanks and ult your whole team she has no utility a small gap closer and no cc so.... how she ganna just use her ult effectively?

Vikíng1 votes

Walk in. She's a juggernaut.

Alëk1 votes

There's this thing called flash. Or she could let someone else do the engaging for her. Or she could wait till the enemy team engages... yeah.... and despite all of that. Her soul grab is such a strong tool that it can force team fights kuz the enemy team is either forced to disengage, or forced to engage to stop that person from becoming a vessel. In the middle of combat she's a beast with her spammable gap closers and the sustain from her tentacles. Overall she's just demonic in teamfights. She's tanky enough to withstand tons of damage so you can't focus her without getting wrekt by her team. And she has good AoE dmg. Once she gets into range she's pretty sticky due to the fact that she can spam her gapcloser. NO matter which way you look at it. she's a great teamfighter.

RyzeRework1 votes

Here's the problem she's flash dependent her skills are extremely slow and easy to move out of she so predictable and she has crazy damange because the lack of ability to get in there and do damnage. She's not great at team fighting anyone who Is good at team fighting has a clear goal and she had a come at me or I'ma walk to your carrys and any bit of cc destroys her

ahferroin71 votes

Heimerdinger works wonders against her too.
