Morellonomicon vs Mana Item Choices
Made some notes while I was on break at work. The idea was to address the bloated state of Morelonomicon by offering mages a choice based on their needs rather than choosing the one good mana item. I also made some notes on the ones I didn't have ideas for. I'd like to get some discussion going on the subject.
2700g
100 Ability Power
400 Mana
10% CDR
Unique: Applies grievous wounds to low health champions
Unique: Restores mana on kill/ assist
Example Users:
A simple modification here. It loses 10% cdr but costs 200g less. Overall the item is aimed towards burst mages who want an early game damage spike of 100 AP and are less concerned with consistent spell casting.
2700g
75 Ability Power
200 Mana
75% Mana regen
20% CDR
Example Users:
Unique: Gain +25% base health regen for every +25% base mana regen
As it currently stands, this item isn't really seeing much use outside of maybe two or three champions. This version is designed for utility mages and those who prefer to have cool downs off than to perform full rotations. To choose this item over Morelo is a conscious choice to give up 25 AP in exchange for better sustain and ability to support allies.
Honestly, it's probably fine as it is. It's not used a lot, but that's mostly due to the sheer power of Morelonomicon and the low number of front line AP champions compared to back line champions. With a less all mighty Morelonomicon it should be considered more often by the champions who would need it.

This item is its own special mess. It is designed not to suit the needs of the champion, but rather is picked up by the champions who can provide for the needs of the tear. I wrote a full analysis in this post: The problem with Tear of the Goddess
Mage Itemization is pretty varried and healthy right now, save for this one giant first item blemish. Thanks for reading, I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this issue.
