Darius has a pull. Renekton and riven a gap closer. Sett can just range burst. Garen has no gap closer bar a weak telegraphed Q that can't pass minions.

Garen? Nah you gotta wait for that level 3 W and even then farm it. Meanwhile.....enjoy the poke.

Build MR? Get AD burst! Build Armour? Get MR burst! Build both? Be useless whilst your team feeds ;)

Garen doesn't need buffs. Unless the last nerfs he received were significant enough to change it, then he's actually still quite strong. He was legitimately broken for a patch not so long ago and it was awful due to how inherently stat-check he is.

If I ever get into a situation that I am melee against someone with some ranged moves.. I usually go with a protobelt as my first item..does not solve every problem but at least every 30 to 40 seconds you get a gap closer with ranged damage at the end of the dash.

It gives you some options that you didn't have before for only 2500g

If you are already losing lane to a mage auto attacking you before level 3, i think your biggest problem isnt the match ups or Garen.
